do they charge fees with departure and with return flights (so twice)

if you have connecting flights do you get charged twice on each leg of the trip because they have to move bags to a diff plane?

I can't write my views on this charging for bags as i am sure my post would be deleted immed.

You pay once in each direction. Once to your destination and once returning. No extra charge for connecting.

You can certainly write your views, edit for content and potential guideline violations, then post. It's not going to change the airlines' policies.

MOST airlines are operating in the red - it's costing them more to stay in business than they're taking in from airfares. They NEED to increase revenues. It's a business decision. Even with the luggage fees, most are still not profitable. What's your objection that's so strong you feel your post would get deleted?

If you don't like the airlines' checked bag fees, you can vote with your wallet by flying Southwest (two free bags) or JetBlue (first bag free) whenever possible.

Otherwise, it's best to simply consider checked bag fees to be part of the cost of flying.

You can reduce how much you pay by reducing the number of checked bags. For example, a couple might be able to get by with one checked bag (under 50 pounds) in the cargo hold and approved carry-on bags and personal items in the cabin.

Some people even manage to get by with just carry-ons, but that's difficult unless you'll have a washer and dryer (such as in a DVC villa or other timeshare villa) or it's a short trip.

sorry I've been flying 40 years without paying to take a bag along. Do most people vacation without clothing? Does everyone only vacation 3-4 days (reasonable time that a carry on would work)

Sorry seems like a rip to me. The airlines "red" revenue is not my problem. They don't need to make it my problem by charging me to take a bag.

My objection would contain language of distaste.... can you take a joke?

Despite being criticized on another board for reminding people of the DIS guidelines (something to the effect of "Let the moderators worry about that, you goody-two-shoes"), as long as what you write won't get YOU in trouble, go ahead. If you're not comfortable posting it here, but think I would be entertained, I have a VERY warped sense of humor AND can keep a secret. Feel free to PM me, and I swear I'll appreciate whatever you write! I may dispute it :teeth: but only directly with you. I consider private messages 100% confidential.

I'm sure the cost of baggage handling was included in your ticket before. So rather than raising the cost of all tickets (or to keep down price increases due to increased costs), they are only charging those who are using the service. They are taking that approach with other items - such as meals on the flights. There's are a couple of other threads on this board complaining about Southwest fares being higher. So are you really getting bags free or are they just raising fares to cover it?

Flying has never been free.

At one time, airline tickets typically included air transportation, seat assignments, meals, checked baggage (often up to 3 large 70-pound bags), and the ability to change flights -- all for one price.

Now airline pricing is a la carte.

Yes, airlines sometimes try to do slimy things. When checked bag fees were new, AirTran and Delta tried to apply them to passengers who bought their tickets when those tickets still included free checked bags. The government had to step in. (Other airlines based the fees on when you purchased your tickets.)

For someone buying airline tickets today, it's easy to mentally add the checked baggage fees when comparing the price against alternatives.

I understand the a la carte theory, and how this benefits people that carry on....The reason for my frustration is my estimated total is coming up much higher than in the past. i don't fly A LOT by I would say 1-2 times yearly. Its been a long while since I booked a large party.... and I don't want to pay lots in baggage fees.

anyway......when it says 1st bag $___ and 2nd bag $____ that means per person and not per party...correct? May seem like a silly question, but I don't want an airport surprise. And yeah, airlines sometimes do slimy things

Each passenger is an entitled to one bag at the "first bag" fee.

For example, a family with 4 passengers on one reservation record is entitled to pay the "first bag" fee 4 times. The 5th through 8th bags would require the higher "second bag" fee.

Even with baggage fees and seating fees Spirit is still very cheap. Since we usually go to Disney when its hot out, our clothes are smaller can mostly fit in a wheeled carry on and a shoulder bag. We add one checked bag for 4-6 people that contains bottled products too big for carry on bags and shoes.
