baggage fees for military

Hoping someone on here knows this info...

A friend said when they went to Disney this summer, they flew continental and they did not charge them (AD member and dependants) for their bags since they were military, even on personal travel. Anyone know if any of the other airlines do this? I see AA's official policy states the AD member can fly their bags for free, but it says dependants only on orders. So I'm wondering if a family of 4- one AD member and 3 dependants have 3 bags, will they charge for two bags? Just wondering how this works... Do any of you have any experience with this?

I don't know about Continental.

But, from personal experience, US Airways allows the military member to have 3 checked baggage for free, with a weight limit of 100 lbs per bag. This is for both for travel on orders and leisure. It's detailed on their website under baggage fees.

I've heard Airtran has a similar policy, but I don't know the details.

I believe that all US carriers offer this now. You don't even have to show any orders. Check the baggage policy on your airline's website for details.

Thanks! I'm looking at AirTran specifically at the moment and it does say AD member can have up to 3 bags free w/out orders. I guess I'm wondering if our family of four shows up with 3 bags, do they all count as DH's bags or will they say, oh, those 2 bags are for the dependants... so we'll charge for them. ??? I mean, I suppose technically, they're all HIS bags too, so I'd hope they'd all go free... I'm just wondering how picky the airlines can be.

Not at all. The above poster is right - no problem in checking all bags under Dad's name.

I also can verify this is true on Continental. We flew to CA/Disneyland last year and had our bag fees waived. My mother also came with us....obviously she's not a dependent. I checked her bag as my second bag. No questions asked.
