Baggage Claim - How Long Does It Take For Bags to Come Up

OT, but I *so very* agree with you on camping, Gail. I've never understood people who do this on purpose!! :p

Dee loves to camp. We lived in the woods, why do I want to go visit other woods? Public showers, UGH!!! Germs, fungus, wow, too good to miss. I did it twice and told him next time it had better say Sheraton or Marriott on the campground sign.

Gail, I would love to be on a flight with you and others that think that carry ons slow it down for everybody.

Sure wish the airlines would enforce the carry on rules.

I also agree about camping. My idea of camping is laying around the motel pool.

I am very shy in RL, I rarely say anything to anyone, but, I will refuse to remove luggage from the overhead, I will hand them a pillow or blanket. And, I will stand my ground and no move for some borish buffoon who is pushing people out of his/her way to get back to their luggage. They can sit and wait. :)

Hey Gail,
Since you are an under-the-seat luggage stower, I hope you never sit behind the dingbat I was sitting by a couple of trips ago. Hubby and I got to the airport early, so we flew standby on an earlier flight and were split up in separate middle seats. We couldn't have stowed our bags in the overheads even if we'd wanted to, as there was no space...we were literally the last people to board the plane. We travel light, so when we do carry-on only, it's typically not a lot. I had one of the old Disney Cruise Line Castaway Club tote bags, which I stowed under my seat. I noticed it kept working its way outward, so I kept pushing it back. Then the woman in front of me turns around and says, "Your bag is in my space!"
I said, "What do you mean?" and she said, "It's touching my feet." I've often noticed I can feel the bag under my seat with my feet, so I said, "Well, it's under the seat. I don't understand what you mean." She said, "No, it's in my legroom." I said, "Do you mean it is sticking out in front?" At first she said yes, but I said I wanted to see that and she backed down and finally shut up. What was I supposed to do? As I said, the overheads were full, and that's the first time I've ever run into someone who had a problem with a bag being under their seat. That bag is smaller than a standard airline-size rolling bag...I wonder what she would have done if someone had a full-sized bag under there. Oh well, l guess it takes all kinds

I disagree about "dilly dallying". In September 2002, I flew into MCO. Plane landed, and my son and I were almost the last people off the plane, we then headed to the restroom. By the time, we reached the baggage claim area, the luggage was already being sent around. I waited and waited and waited. Turns out our bag was stolen! The police finally found it later that afternoon in a dumpster out back with just our underwear still left in it (boy, was I ever glad to see my underwear!!) MCO security even admitted they have a problem with stolen luggage at their airport. So now I've learned my lesson. When the plane lands, I am out of there and am one of the first ones to arrive at the baggage claim to make sure no one grabs my bag before I do!

I'm ALWAYS one of those crazy people running for the baggage claim, and never before had I had a good reason to do so. Now I feel I do! :p I never imagined that anyone would STEAL someone's bag. I could see mistakenly grabbing the wrong one, but to actually steal the stuff and leave the empty bag (save some underoos) in a dumpster?!?!?!

And Gail, I'm with you. Unless it says Sheraton, Marriott or Fort Wildnerness (in a cabin with cable TV, bathroom, and phone service), I say no.

Aahh! Similar thing happened to me on a SW flight MCO to ALB this past August. My bag of books and meds kept getting shoved back from under the seat in front of me. I shoved it back a couple of times and the guy turned around and told me to stop shoving my bag into his space. Seems he had a bag under the seat in front of him (his space) and another bag he shoved under his seat (my space)! Told him sorry but he was wrong. I flagged down a FA and told her my woes. She told the guy he was wrong and took the second bag from him and found an overhead for it. Guy kept glaring at me tween the seats the whole 3 hour flight.

Me too, I had to chuckle at this story. I am wondering HOW she could have been comfortable with her feet UNDER her seat. Guess she does not understand that under the seat is for the person behind you, as long as it does not protrude into that pax "leg room".
People, they are sometimes truly amazing. :)

All I know is the baggage comes out a lot faster in Orlando than it does when we get home!

I'm the type that prefers to spend 5 minutes getting down to luggage claim and then stand there for 20 minutes salivating and waiting for my luggage. But I don't need to push anyone; 17 minutes salivating is about the same as 20.

It's the people that have ONLY carryons that are the pain in the neck. They're the ones who push to get on first to find room for their 50kg of "carryon" bags, and then they push to get off fast as being is a hurry is the only reason for having crammed all their stuff into carryons in the first place. There should be a rule that everyone has to check at least one bag. Then things would be more civilized.

when landing in orlando have found that it roughly takes from plane to rental car about a half hour!

by the time plane lands I have my things pretty much together and as soon as there is a break we clear out our aisle. hit the bathroom and by the time we get to the baggage claim luggage is already going around!!

Now Erik, not all of us who do carry-ons are rush-rush maniacs with steamer trunks!
Hubby and I pride ourselves on travelling light, and our carry-ons often consist of only one suitcase plus a light tote bag. Instead of feeling like rushing, having only carry-ons makes us more relaxed as we know that we can head right on our way once we are off the plane. Sometimes we purposely choose the exit row in the back, even though we know how long it takes for a stretch 757 to empty. There's too much real stress in life for me to worry about rushing on and off an aircraft...saving a few minutes just isn't worth getting worked up about.

I agree with inkkognito. We always travel light with carry-ons...never ask anyone to lift our carry-on bag.

We are DVC members so we don't need 2 suitcases to travel to Florida. We have a washer-dryer,iron,etc in our villa. This is Florida not Alaska people are traveling to. It cracks me up the people that bring enough clothes for 2 weeks for a 6 day stay. I usually bring 3-4 golf shirts 3-4 pairs of shorts, pair of Dockers, etc. Why would I want to lug a large suitcase for just those items?

It is personal choice about checking luggage or not. But just remember while you are waiting for your luggage(if it isn't lost or damaged) I will be at WDW 30 minutes after getting off the plane with NO chance of my luggage not being there or damaged.::yes::

I have traveled many many times to WDW and never had my luggage lost. In fact with all the hundreds of flights I have taken only twice was my luggage delayed. It got to me several hours later.

MCO is very good about getting the bags quickly to the carousel.

It may take me a few extra minutes to get to WDW but I didn't have to lug my suitcase through security, all through the airport, hoist it into an overhead bin, delay others trying to get off the plane. My personal pet peeve is those seated in the back of the plane putting their suitcases in the overheads at the front of the plane. Your space is above your seat.

You may be good with your carryons but I have seen way too many that waste my time on the plane.

I always have two suitcases, Nick. I simply cannot make up my mind what I will want to wear a week out. BTW, you listed what you bring, but, do you bring underware? ;)

ITA, they misdirected one piece of luggage ONCE in all the time I have been flying and it was on the way home. It was in my driveway, literally, the next morning and they compensated me with vouchers for their mistake.

That is the biggest reason I love commuter planes. You get the best of both worlds. I can have only carry-on luggage, but also not have to bring it on the plane. They gate check just about everything!!!

Also, I love camping!!!!! I would LOVE to be one of those folks that lives at Ft. Wilderness for 3-4 months in the winter!!! In a tent even!!!!

My apologies to you and Barb. I was just being grumpy of course. I meant to say that SOME people with just carryons behave that way, certainly not ALL of them (and certainly not my friends here!). I was thinking more of business travelers. For some reason they go to Orlando too.

I can do the carryon thing when traveling alone, but for some reason it doesn't work with a family of four. Actually we only checked 3 out of our 7 bags last month, so that wasn't too bad. And 3 of our 4 carryons went under the seat. What goes in all those bags? You'd have to talk to DW! But I do my own packing, and as the temps were in the 40's just about every evening, I was very glad I brought more than one pair of long pants and some long-sleeved shirts along with the shorts and knit shirts. (And yes, Gail, I did bring underwear!)

No apology necessary...I've seen plenty of the people you are talking about who drag on everything but the kitchen sink!
In all our flights to Orlando, our luggage has only been lost twice. Both times it was American, and both times we had checked it at the Disney Cruise Line terminal rather than at the airport. In both cases, it eventually turned up unharmed. Once it went to Jamaica, and the other time we never found out where it had gone. I'm not afraid of losing my checked luggage, but when we're just bumming around Orlando for the weekend, we don't need much and I like being able to leave immediately upon on landing.

Checked bags take up an airline's ground handling resources. If no one did carry-on, then the wait at the baggage claim would be longer. There are very few people who travel with no luggage; so eliminating carry-on will not improve anyone's departure time from the airport.
