Really? I got back from England on the second and the only place that checked our bags were the airport and the British museum would have but we didn't have one that day. No other tours, trains, etc did the entire time.
The majority of place I went if you were going inside they made you bag check or go through a metal detector. The were a few where there were just guards who kind of gave you the eye but yep lots of security. Maybe it was just the type of places I visited.
Disneyland Paris and Windsor Castle they put my bag and me both through separate detectors. Tower of London was a bag check (thorough check). Even the British Library made everyone go through security though it was just a bag check. The Louvre was bag xray before you even got into the building. Eiffel tower was a bag check in a portable building before you can even go into the area surround the base. I did mostly historic places and museums and only a couple allowed access without some sort of security. Was wanded a couple of time......can't remember where. Got pulled aside at Heathrow. But swept through US Customs on a breeze, they even let me step over to the Global Check line because the regular line was very crowded at DFW.
The train that made me xray my bag and go though security was the Eurostar to Paris, the local commuter trains in London did not make you check but there were tons of security.
