BAFTA question

was watching Naveen Andrews on a talk show over here and he was talking about how surprised he was that the Emmys were such a big deal. He hadn't known, and said he had thought they were more like the BAFTA's...no red carpet, not televised. That confused me because we've watched the last couple of years on bbc-america, so obviously they are televised and we saw some red carpet footage beforehand.

is this a new thing that they are televised? or fairly new thing? I was a bit confused by that.

I thought they were televised and that they had a red carpet for the press, just not on such a big scale as the Emmys. Perhaps that is what he means ???
