Wanting advice from one of the availability gurus...

Currently I have booked a split stay between VGF and AKL running from May 31-June 8.

I reside in Ohio, where the weather has been brutal and our kids have been out of school seven days already.

It's still up in the air whether the state legislature is going to give the public schools extra calamity days, or make them stay in session longer. The upshot of which for DVC is that we might need to drop the first part of our trip and reschedule later.

Finally coming to the question- if we don't hear for certain about the school until around April 1, what is the likelihood that anything one bedroom at any resort will be available to book for the second week of June? I know, no guarantees- just wondering if this has historically been a "sold-out" week or not?

As of today, it looks like both SSR and OKW are available- I just cannot decide whether to change now or wait and see what happens with the schools.

Unfortunately I don't have the points available to book both options, without borrowing a lot and messing up next year's points.

Thanks in advance...

As long as you are okay with either AKL (any view) or SSR you should be able to get something- especially if you are willing to do a split stay. We got a studio at SSR with 5 days notice last year the week after memorial day.

Winter school delays are why I have never, ever planned vacation for the week right after school is SUPPOSED to get out. You just never know. Maryland declared a state of emergency on this last big storm which I THINK means they won't have to make up these last 2 days.

ANYWAY, we had to cancel our trip to VGC at DL and Aulani last August at just 8 days out and when I asked about availability at WDW there were no studios (which was our preference) but they DID have one 1-bedroom available for 9 nights at SSR so we grabbed it. Of course there are no guarantees but if we found availability at 8 days out I would guess you'd have some luck in April for June somewhere…

Good luck!!

I hope you are right about schools in Maryland getting excused for snow days last week. I have the feeling we are going to be going to school until July at this rate. We, too, never book anything for the week following the scheduled last day of school - as it is now, in our county we have 4 or 5 days to make up at the end ... and counting. Winter isn't over yet.

Hello my fellow Marylanders. Here is the kicker with making up days where we were under a state of emergency. MSDE requires counties to in "good faith" try to make up the days before they will waive last Thursday and Friday. The superintendents have to request a waiver. Unfortunately in my county instead of taking Presidents' Day and the 18th which is a teacher training day which made sense and is in our handbook they took other days. Waited to long to enforce expectations that are already implemented. Oh week going to wdw in March to watch my sons marching band march down main street USA.

Our SD cancelled Spring Break but said that student who had planned vacations during that time would not be penalized for non-attendance.

I just know that a few years ago they declared a state of emergency after a tropical storm that went thru in the fall and power was out for days & days and Montgomery Co. schools were out for like a week and they waived making up those days…hoping for the same this year.:rolleyes2

I hope so as well but from what I was told doesn't look good

In Maryland, a declared state of emergency doesn't automatically mean school days don't have to be made up. When the bad weather season is over, superintendents can request waivers, but usually have to make an attempt to make up as many days as possible.

Will have my fingers crossed! :thumbsup2

We're in Kansas City suburbs and have had five snow days thus far. Our last day is a half day May 22nd and we're planning to leave for Disney on the 23rd. I know it's cutting it close, but our district builds in numerous snow days which we're no where close to maxing out and adding on additional days. If anything would occur, I believe the half day may possibly turn in to a full day.

OP, if you're concerned about your area I would plan for the worst and change the lodging and flight dates now. Memorial Day last year was crowded and SWW added to the attendance level.

if it were me - I would just reschedule now instead of waiting. Sadly for those of you in the frozen tundra - winter might not be over yet.

The peace of mind would be worth it to me.

I lived in Ohio and was in middle school during the blizzard of '78. We were out of school nearly 2 weeks and had to go on several saturdays to make up the days.

We live in ohio too and we are leaving when the kids get out of school as well. I'm hoping that they can make up over spring break if they have too. Yikes. Good luck!

Depends where you live ;) I live and teach in AZ. We've had a crazy warm winter so far, like 5 days under 70. It's been in the high 70s low 80s all Feb. So, we love to travel right when school gets out. In 13 years as a student and 8 years teaching, school has never ever been cancelled, so that is totally foreign to me. We start in August when it's 115. Poor kids get no outside recess basically the whole first month!

This winter has been awful! We are in nj and have lost 7 days as well. They have pretty much taken away spring break by taking 4 days away from that and they also added a day onto the end of school. Luckily my son is only in 1st grade but very advanced so we decided to pull him out for our family vacation to disney this year. So in my mind he's still getting a spring break lol. Good luck with your dilemma I hope your school district decides on something soon :)

Keep your reservations and enjoy your vacation as originally planned. If they do extend the school year, pull your kids out of school and allow them to miss the last few days. It won't affect their grades because teachers will have already entered final scores into their grading system.

I am a teacher in Ohio. I booked out trip for Juns 17. Luckily we have two extra days built into our schedule and the state house passed the bill forgiving 4 days, because my district has missed 15 days! ( we missed two due to tornado damage in November--the day I booked!). Even though I booked two weeks after school ended, I would have been in trouble!
As for the "miss the last few days" argument, if her kids are in high school that is exam time. They may be willing to give exams early for families who booked flights, etc. before winter hit, but then again maybe not. High school kids work up until the last day!
