Bad weather/tropical storm

Okay... Whatever. One thread actually had someone asking if they should evacuate their rooms. Oh the hysteria... The problem is because of times like this it's underestimated when it really IS needed.

I used to live in Connecticut. People would wipe the grocery store shelves clean of bread and water for two inches of snow. There were NO batteries or flashlights available in the entire state.

You forgot the milk....

...and of course as soon as I posted that it started to rain here. Still just a steady rain, not a tropical storm kind of thing.

Just let me know if you need to borrow one of my generators, a portable bomb Shelter, a rapture radio, QRP rig, or cue up the obligatory crisis music.

Okay, but really just a quick glance at TWC to see the storm track....

If my thread is so ridiculous to you, you don't have to post here.

Just checking on my mates because from what I'd seen, there was a tropical storm large enough to have been named, and down here, when we get our tropical storms, we get pummeled.
Our northern states are currently under quite a bit of water with flooding causing havoc.
So my apologies for thinking of my friends who are ~8,000 miles away when the country I'm in is also under floods, making it a little more close to home.
Sheesh.

The thread isn't ridiculous... Nobody really knew where the storm was going, if it was going to intensify, etc...

I just got overtaken with some of the hysterical responses not only on this thread, but two others just like it.

So, in short, it certainly is not your thread that I found silly.

We must have very different ridiculous radars, I didn't think anything in this thread was ridiculous

As I said, I was talking about all the weather threads.

Point is, a weak tropical storm passing well to the north is not any different than any other day in Florida during summer.
Indeed, that's not to say a true cat 5 can't barrel in next week (although it wouldn't likely be a cat 5 when it hit Orlando).

Are they playing the crisis music yet?

You mean people in CT don't have generators?? lol We have had our generator since the ice storm of 08. When we loose electricity we have no water and no heat so a generator is a given. I always found it funny when I lived in VA that if it was 3 inches of snow the warnings would say do not go out in this snow. There was one day the schools cancelled due to impending storm and the storm didn't start until 10 pm.

I think it was kind of Jess to check in with the DIS Team. I saw a few things in my FB feed that made me think hmmm maybe the storm is bigger then anticipated. One parent posted that her kids school were not cancelled until all the kids arrived at school and the bus drivers turned around and took them back home. I think the family lived in Jacksonville area.

Keep safe all you FL People. :fish:

Thank you for checking on us. You always have to keep your eye on these storms. The first year I lived here the hurricane was forecast to come up the East Coast and it went through Tampa and over Orlando. Glad all we got from this storm was rain but you never know. I will not be one of those people on the news that stand there and say they didn't know the storm was coming and they weren't prepared.

No worries Kathy. I'm just glad it wasn't as bad as it could have been. From what I was seeing, it looked like it could be nasty.
The weather is so fickle, you just never now what it will do.

Good morning all. We apparently got ~2 inches of rain overnight judging from the level of water in the pool. We should be done with most of this by noon and returning to normal FL summer weather. Seeing patches of blue sky over towards no name town now @safetymom

Thanx for the update, Jeff. Glad to know all is (fairly) well. :)

I've got one last thing to say here. Well, maybe two or three....
  • I appreciate that folks are concerned about friends and theme parks here in central FL
  • I'm less than thrilled with the news media and their apparent need to feed ratings by hyping every weather even that comes along.
  • I'm really worried that society has apparently bought into this crisis reporting mentality.

No, I'm not complaining about anybody here on this thread. Please don't be offended.

I didn't see any of it via news outlets. I saw it all from regular people posting on Facebook. Not being in Florida/USA, I don't tend to get your news outlets down here.

Storms increase in size and strength and storms decrease in size and strength.

Even weather outlets don't have all of the answers. All you need to do is look at a path projection. There is a reason they call it a "bowl of spaghetti". The projections can go in a dozen different ways.

Central Florida originally had a much different projection than what actually happened, but the storm shifted and headed north of us.

We missed most of it.

Please understand that this type of things isn't unique to central FL..

We were in Florence, Italy when the Cinque Terre region had their devastating floods a couple of years ago.

Almost everyone on our trip got calls, texts and emails asking if we were okay. We were hundreds of miles away.

While central Floridians might get weather forecasts that are more up to date and more detailed, this is not true everywhere in the world. Some folks are hearing about things through social media and other less detailed outl

Also, those of us that live here are usually a bit more jaded when it comes to weather related issues. Our news media loves to let us know that there is a "disturbance of the coast of Africa" and that we should all evacuate. In reality, the storm may never form, it may go in 1000 directions and , even if it does hit us, it will take 10 days to get here. Hurricane don't sneak up on us. Tornadoes do. They can hit with very little warning/

All that being said, I think it's really sweet that people are concerned enough to check on us and I can't imagine questioning that.

If something were to happen in Australia..regardless of where in Australia...I'd still want to know that our friends were okay.

No one needs to ever apologize for checking on anyone's well being. It's a really nice thing to do.

Thanks Kevin. I'm glad it calmed down to just heavy rain by the time it hit your general area.

Also, speaking of your friends in Australia, I'm not sure where your friend is that you've mentioned on the show a couple of times, I think his name is Matt? But we've had some pretty bad weather up along the east coast, from Sydney, right up past Brisbane. I hope your friend is ok if he's in that area. Flooding has been pretty bad in some places.
Melbourne has been spared at this point, but they've told us the "wild weather" is headed our way.

Very nicely put, Kevin, and thanx for the kind words! I for one (and speaking only for myself, of course) can say they are very much appreciated!!

I'm becoming a partial Florida resident this week...so I guess these kinds of storms come with the territory. I'm just glad you all are safe and sound!

Like I said before, having worked in emergency management for over 20 years, I know storms can DEFINITELY change at the last minute, and Mother Nature has a mid of her own. Nobody thought Sandy was going to impact New Jersey (even northern NJ - not much flooding, but terrible winds) the way she did, nor Irene (with bad flooding in northern NJ) after her. And Tropical Storm Floyd in '99, which had devastating impacts as far as flooding for northern NJ - barely touched southern NJ - matter of fact, the SUN was out down there when those of us in northern NJ were getting HAMMERED!!! I know because I was on the phone with colleagues down there while it was going on.
