Bad weather/tropical storm

Storms increase in size and strength and storms decrease in size and strength.

Even weather outlets don't have all of the answers. All you need to do is look at a path projection. There is a reason they call it a "bowl of spaghetti". The projections can go in a dozen different ways.

Central Florida originally had a much different projection than what actually happened, but the storm shifted and headed north of us.

We missed most of it.

Please understand that this type of things isn't unique to central FL..

We were in Florence, Italy when the Cinque Terre region had their devastating floods a couple of years ago.

Almost everyone on our trip got calls, texts and emails asking if we were okay. We were hundreds of miles away.

While central Floridians might get weather forecasts that are more up to date and more detailed, this is not true everywhere in the world. Some folks are hearing about things through social media and other less detailed outl

Also, those of us that live here are usually a bit more jaded when it comes to weather related issues. Our news media loves to let us know that there is a "disturbance of the coast of Africa" and that we should all evacuate. In reality, the storm may never form, it may go in 1000 directions and , even if it does hit us, it will take 10 days to get here. Hurricane don't sneak up on us. Tornadoes do. They can hit with very little warning/

All that being said, I think it's really sweet that people are concerned enough to check on us and I can't imagine questioning that.

If something were to happen in Australia..regardless of where in Australia...I'd still want to know that our friends were okay.

No one needs to ever apologize for checking on anyone's well being. It's a really nice thing to do.

I feel like lately kindness towards people and tolerance of people are being criticized in this section, and that bums me out.

I'm becoming a partial Florida resident this week...so I guess these kinds of storms come with the territory. I'm just glad you all are safe and sound!

I feel like lately kindness towards people and tolerance of people are being criticized in this section, and that bums me out.

I feel like there have been far more ridiculous threads of late, ones that have been locked, over things that are so completely ridiculous, that this thread would be so low on the ridiculous-meter, and that people would see it as a thread to discuss the goings on with our friends in the area and those that aren't.

I'd prefer to see 50 of this type of "ridiculous" thread than one questioning the colour of an actors skin... But perhaps that's just me?

That said, between the media and a few other reports I was thinking the storm increased from a weak TS to a cat 5, and took an abrupt easterly turn. Many here believed Orlando was going to take a direct "hit".

Again, nobody's here fault, it's just human nature to get whipped into a frenzy.

My concern is that when a true frenzy is needed, folks will remember the false alarms.

Sorry, I'm just not following you.
I just wanted to know my friends were safe from what I was seein was a tropical storm, not something to mess around with, at least, not here in Aus.

This is so freekin' stupid.

Yes, everyone is nice for checking on the folks in Florida.

That said, just one look at the storm track would have shown a low level tropical storm tracking 100 miles north of WDW. Somehow that got translated to a storm hitting Orlando and people were asking if they should evacuate their rooms. That's the over paranoia that causes problems when there actilually IS A NEED to be concerned.

I don't even think any fireworks shows were cancelled...
Now, I think we should laugh this one off so when a truly dangerous storm does hit, and it will, people will take it seriously.
