When we went on the the Eastern cruise a couple of years ago, we noticed that liquor and cigarettes were cheaper at St Maarten than in St Thomas. Now I'm thinking of doing the Western and I've promised a friend that I'd bring back a carton of cigarettes if we do. (The liquor would be for me!)

Does anyone have any observations about which port on the Western cruise offers the best prices for these things?

Thanks!
Julie

Dont know about the liquor, but I always buy a carton of cigarettes on the ship at the duty free shop for $16 carton.

I think i would pass on the smokes. A couple times I bought some - once in Cozumel and once in St. Thomas. There were about 15 a carton, and they were stale. You might pay a little more on the ship, but maybe they would not be stale.

The best liquor prices on the western are in Cozumel in my opinion. I learned that the first time i was there. For instance on the ship, tanqueray was 14.50, and off the ship in Cozumel you could get three for $25.

Thaks for the responses. I'd never thought about cigarettes being stale. I know we bought a carton on board early in the cruise last time we went for $16 or so, but then saw them in a store in St Thomas for around $12. I would think that those prices, they would turn over really quickly and not get a chance to get stale. Unless they buy them on a secondary market from stores in other places where they've gone stale....

All I know is that I have to pick up some Bailey's somewhere...yumm...

Do your friend a favor and pass on cigs. Buy him the patch instead.

I'm sure she can decide what her purchases will be.

I can't wait until all states are like California.....no smoking in any public buildings, restraunts, bars, etc.

Not ot be nasty, but the smoke level is exactly what keeps us out of the clubs in the evenings.

Mark-
Are you talking about clubs in general or on the cruise? I'd hate to find out that the clubs on the ship are smokey! Yuk!

If you buy cigarettes on board are you allowed to smoke them or do they hold your purchase until you depart?
Please no lectures on smoking:)

ncligs,

I hear ya! We take it for granted here. Every time I travel out of state, I always have to remind myself not to ask smokers to put it out.

RellingTwin,

I'm not sure, but I think you can smoke anywhere outdoor on the deck and also on your verandah. There are only a couple of indoor places onboard that you can smoke. I don't know them since I don't know any smokers.

Thanks MFan, but I was asking if you are allowed to smoke the cigs, or do they hold them until you depart? Anyone know?

on the 8/31 Magic our friends bought cigarettes at Off Beat on the ship and were given them right away - they only hold the alcohol til the end of the cruise.

BTW - the prices on the ship were really good and they had specials each day , like one day 1 liter of absolut vodka was $9 and if you bought a 2nd one it was only $7 - $16 for 2 liters is an awesome price. Needless to say we stocked up and bought 7 assorted bottles.

Didnt even have to pay duty on it - customs said it wasnt over the $10 threshold.
