Bad Experience at Crystal Palace

We just returned from a great weekend at Disney. We live in Florida so we go about about every 6-8 weeks. We always go to a few character meals which are the highlight of our visits for our 3 year old twins. I think we have been to all of the character meals over the last year. Our girls love Tigger and Pooh so I figured that we should eat at the Crystal Palace on this trip (along with 1900 Park Fare--Cinderella, and Liberty Tree Tavern). The Crystal palace was by far the worst character meal we have been to. The food was actually quite good although the kids buffet only had mac'n'cheese and chicken fingers. I clearly remembered mini hot dogs from a prior visit but not this time.
We were seated without too much of a wait. We ate our entire meal including two trips to the dessert bar without a visit from any of the 4 characters. In fact ,75 minutes passed without a character coming anywhere near our section of the restaurant. After an hour, I asked our waiter if something was wrong. He went to ask the character handlers what was wrong---he really didn't get an answer. We noticed that Tigger ad Piglet kept visiting the same 4-5 tables and actually spent about 15 minutes at one particular table. Then just as we were hoping that they would head in the direction of our section....they went on break!!!! Other people in our forgotten about section began to complain to the hostesses who seemed to be very frustrated as well. I then got up and went over to one of the handlers who replied "You must have had at least one of the characters by now....I just got back from my lunch" .
I then asked to speak to the manager. She assured me that this was not a typical experience and she offered us a breakfast the next day. When i explained that we were leaving after lunch she finally took my girls over to each of the four characters for a picture. The handlers seemed quite bothered by this.
We will never go back. We will stick with Chef Mickey's, Garden Grill, and 1900 Park Fare. Another parent at another table told me he had the same experience last time he was there (and sat at our exact table).
I am now thinking of reporting this meal experience to guest services so that perhaps someone else doesn't have to go through the same thing!! Especially for that kind of money!!!!

I'm sorry you had a rotten time there. We haven't been back again since we had pretty much the same experience in 2000. I don't know if we had our invisibility cloaks on that day or what but the characters would just skip our table every time--it broke my 10 year old's heart, particularly when they paid extravagant attention to the honeymooners at the table next to us. I spoke with our server after the second character missed us and she had them come back around but then the third and fourth ones passed us by and I had to ask her to send them back again. I'd like to enjoy my meal and not have to spend my time worrying about them passing us by. We weren't at an out of the way table, either, so I'm not sure what the deal was.

Unfortunately, this is the service we have received here as well. We gave it 3 chances and will never go back. I'm not sure what it is about that restaurant but we always get skipped by the characters there as well yet other people rave about the interaction and love the place. I'm starting to wonder if it has something to do with where you sit.

We've had a totally different experience. We have been there for both Lunch and Dinner with no problems. We have have had all the characters stop at our table and some even did it twice. On our last visit we did have to wait a bit for Tigger but he still did make it to the table.
Now at a Chef Mickey's breakfast, we had Pluto make a cursory stop before his handler took him off to another part of the restuarant never to return.

had much the same thing happen to us at breakfast at crystal palace. food was actually very, very good. two out of the four characters made it to our table. disappointing.

WOW! I'm really surprised! We've eaten there several times now and have commented on how nice the character interaction was. They spend a nice short time at each table and we've gotten to see every character at least once.

I'm really surprised to hear this but so sorry this happened to you! I'd be upset, too!

I am so sorry that happened to all of you. It is so disappointing to have high hopes for something (especially when it involves your children) and then have it go horrible - even more so at those prices. My 5yo ds and I ate there for breakfast and had wonderful interaction with the characters though my ds favorite part was the childrens parade around the restaurant led by the characters. :)

Last time we were there we had characters but terrible service. We waited 45 minutes for our ADR table, when seated it took forever to get our drinks, and the worst thing was that when we went to the buffet the servers were very rude. I asked for some horseradish to go with my prime rib, the guy was carving away so I waited patiently for him to serve other guests, after 5 minutes (which is a long time to stand with a plate of prime rib) I politely asked for some horseradish again the guy turned and gave me a death glare and snapped "I HEARD YOU THE FIRST TIME!" I was shocked and very upset. I had not been rude at all. Needless to say, we will never go back :sad2:

::yes:: We spent xmas 2005 at Disney. We absolutely enjoyed the food at the CP above all other character meals that week but the characters were everywhere but our table. There was a long line for piglet at the doors as we were leaving so we waited but when it got to be our turn the handler was rude to us and said we should sit at our tbles for characters when I explained we were leaving as we had been here for 2 hours at our table she rudely said well be on your way then..RUDE....nothing was said to the people in front or behind us. So im thinking for the $$$$ whats the deal here?

I've never been to this character meal, so this is just a question. Were the tables in you area very close together? Could it be that it is hard for the characters to get into that area? It seems odd that one part of the restaurant would receive all of the attention and the other area ignored. I just wonder if it is a problem with the layout of the restaurant.

Wow- how rude! I guess if it had been me I probably would have snapped back. I don't take kindly to rudeness since I'm not all that used to it here in the south. I probably would have responded well APPARENTLY NOT! since I still don't have any horseradish and I've been standing her patiently for over 5min!
*then stomp -okay walk LOL- over to tell the mgr about the employees rudeness*

Oh and btw I'm curious where everyone sat at Crystal Palace. We were there twice this summer and one trip it was wonderful, the 2nd trip I had 2 issues:
Sometimes the characters would pass us to the next table and I'm vocal enough that I'd get the character's attention to come back to us and sometimes I'd have to ask another employee to get them to come back and

sometimes I had to be vocal about getting the character to come back to my NEIGHBORING table (total strangers to me btw) because they kept skipping their table and they'd just sit there sad, looking around like what in the world just happened- why'd they pass us by? and their kids would start getting upset and apparently I'm more outspoken than they are.

I do wonder if it's some certain area that for some unknown reason the characters tend to pass on by? Seems unlikely though... doesn't really make sense... but it's odd how many people are experiencing being passed.

Oh and btw- neither time did the characters that came to the tables have a handler with them. They were just on their own...

Are you kidding me? Well be on your way then? Did you say "excuse me" in a tone that implied you weren't just saying it but actually expected an answer?

I will not tolerate rudeness. I don't allow my kids to be rude I'm certainly not going to take it from CMs when I'm paying to be in that establishment (restaurant, WDW, resort). How rude indeed! I wonder why you were singled out! And 2hrs at the table without characters? Appalling!

I don't believe I saw an area that was any "tighter" fit than other areas. They are pretty big characters and the walkway in between tables isn't all that huge- but it's all the same everywhere. Also if it's a tight fit to get into an area- they need to either fix that or stop putting people at that table. Each and every person who pays for that buffet is paying basically for the characters. As many many many have said on this board before- you pay the high prices for buffet, adult price for children 9up who really won't eat much, for adults who won't eat at all/etc. for the characters...

I think it may just be a case of characters that either aren't being careful to watch and make sure they are going to every table and forgetting where they have been/etc. (training issue?) or just don't care... who knows. :(

Ps. where we were seated the first time (where characters were great that we experienced and witnessed) was if you turned left after entering the doors and looked straight down all the way to the window- next to that window is where we sat.
The 2nd time when we kept getting skipped and the table across from us kept getting skipped was if you turned left after entering the doors and we were the 2nd table to your left, on your left -next to the windows that could look out towards the castle.

I also had a similar experience as the OP but not near as bad. I probably wouldn't go back but in December I family that wants to try there.

We got to see some of the characters but Pooh never came to our table, nor did Tigger. We were there quite a while as were the people next to us and they missed the same characters.

They would get right up next to us and then leave.

I wasn't happy since Pooh was my kids favorite. But oh well, it didn't bother my kids too much, they saw Pooh and Tigger later that week at Animal Kingdom.

And no we were not at tables that a character couldn't get over to greet us, they just never did. We were however the 2 tables closest to the buffet on the left side of the restaurant.

OMG! We must've had the SAME guy - he refused to locate another piece of prime rib that was not blue!!!

Like sajetto - we had the characters but terrible buffet servers and, sorry CP fans - lesser food options than the previous few days at H&V. I would call this "uneven" overall for CP and Disney needs to address this pricey MK buffet. We have consistently found better character interaction at CM's, and better food at H&V and even CM.

Always depends on what you're seeking. We usually don't seek a buffet for the gourmet food selections - it's about the characters or a Fantasmic seat for us. But if you go to CP and don't even see your characters - I am just so sorry, OP....

We were sitting in an area with lots of space for the characters. It was as if we weren't on the itinerary at all!! For those of you who know the layout--to the right after you come in up by th front window ---half way around!!! I just can't believe that Disney doesn't have this under control yet with all of their technology. Does anybody know with whom or where to take this further?? I just want to make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else.

I found this number on a web site.

The Crystal Palace (407) 824–6517

On another note. We have eaten at CP every trip and we have never had this problem. We have always been visited by every character except once Tigger passed us by. We told our waitress when we were leaving that we did not see Tigger and she hurried right over to him and got us a picture. She even took it for us so both of us could be in it.

We love the CP and make it a point to do bfast there before the park opens. I am so sorry that people have had the bad experiences there. I hope they remedy this problem.

I'm so sorry to hear about all the bad experiences.

I guess I've been lucky the two times I've been there. Both times the food was great, service was good and character interaction was awesome. This last time, in January, we had all the characters but one (Pigglet) come twice. Pigglet came once but his handler was hurrying him since they had to do the parade but regardless he waved at me to come to him and took a quick picture. Tigger even sat at our table as well as at two other tables in our area for at least 5 minutes. Pooh came by twice and we took at least four pictures with him and Eyore stayed around a little bit with us as well.

For all of you who had a bad experience, please write a letter or e-mail to Disney and let them know what is going on; if any of those experiences happened to me I know I too would be upset.

So the food was good, but the characters ignored you? Sounds like my kind of place! We've stayed away since they converted it into a character meal. Maybe it's time to give it another try.

We had a great experience this past July. Eeyore even stopped at our table twice. It has been my favorite character meal. We did not like the one at AK because Mickey did not come and visit. We had to go find him.

I guess they have good days and bad days. However, with that kind of money, they better give you all GOOD service and character interaction.
