beach club capacity misunderstanding

I've stayed on property hundreds of times over the last 35 years. My most recent stay at Beach Club was the first time I've ever felt compelled to email in a complaint. I am wondering if I'm being unreasonable and would love honest feedback. I booked a room for the weekend to decompress & escape after what was quite frankly a traumatic medical incident and hospital stay in our family. This felt indulgent, as we just had an excellent first stay in the tower at Poly (1 br) three weeks prior. It was last minute, I grabbed what was available with my remaining points which happened to be a 1 bedroom resort view at Beach Club.

The DVC website states it sleeps 5 plus an infant. I was not knee deep in research, I did not look up floor plans, I took the advertised capacity at face value & with just a days notice we were on our way. We arrived and saw there were 2 beds. We have 3 older children. The bed in the bedroom did seem large, may have been a king, but I would not expect my 3 children to share it. They would not be able to, someone would get pushed out. The murphy bed was the same size it is at all other resorts- perhaps a queen or full? Either way you shake it, 5 of us were not fitting in the 2 beds. The phones in our room did not work and there was no dvc concierge available so I headed over to the main lobby. The line was almost to the back door*, I waited 45 minutes to speak to someone who was unsympathetic & would not budge. The only thing they would offer was a blow up mattress. No room change. If we left there would be no points refund. I explained repeatedly that we had linked all guests (with their ages) in the system, that it is advertised as 5 + infant, but that it can only sleep 4. I called guest services to see if I could get a different response but they gave the same answer. The guest services rep on the phone said "that room is actually for 4 + an infant". I said well there are no infants present- as a matter of fact, no one here is shorter than 5 feet tall! There were no blankets in the pillow/blanket bag in the closet, so I had to call for blankets for both the murphy bed and air mattress. After all of this the air mattress would not stay inflated and my daughter woke up on the floor. I emailed my concerns 5 days ago and stated I would like a response beyond the typical acknowledgement receipt, but I have not heard back. Emotions attached to the intent of the trip aside, am I overreacting?

You might want to take screenshots of where it says it sleeps 5 + infant and then call MS and let them know your experience in the off chance that they will offer some type of compensation. In the least, they need to fix where it says it sleeps 5 plus an infant.

The description of a Beach Club one bedroom in the DVC cite is as follows:
1 Bedroom Villa - Resort View
  • Views of Disney's Beach Club Resort, Woods, Pool or Courtyard
  • 1 king bed, 1 queen-size sleeper sofa
  • Sleeps up to 4 Guests and 1 Infant (under 3 years of age)
I am sorry you were mistaken about capacity. On the Disboards it’s often mentioned that they will allow you to book 5, but they will not provide bedding for the fifth person.

First off sorry for the family trouble hope is everything is ok now.

Yes, Beach Club along with Boulder Ridge and boardwalk allow you to sleep up to five adults plus an infant of the reservation is made with points however you have to bring your own bedding for that fifth person. Also, unless there’s been some update, I believe you have to call member services to add the fifth person as it won’t let you do it online.

Thank you. Things are getting better, they always will.

I was able to add all 5 of us online, and after doing so I linked the reservation to my app just in case we decided to take advantage of the free water park on check in day (we did, and all 5 of us had pass compatibility there) =/

I will follow up with another email with screenshots, thank you

Thanks for your input. In my research after the fact I have read the same thing you mentioned. I wasn't researching beyond capacity at the time of booking. This could be all my fault after all, as I was a bit frazzled (and still am, to be honest). I'm open to any feedback so I appreciate it.

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience, especially at a trying time for your family. However, this seems to have been an oversight on your part. I sympathize with your circumstances but I think you should change the title of your thread. Neither Beach Club Resort nor DVC did anything wrong. It's a wonderful place, and your title is unfair.
I hope things get better for your family and that your next vacation is perfect.

Yeah for me it’s something I think we all know sleeps 5 but everywhere it lists info I’m aware of it says 4 with asterisk that 5 can sleep there but no sleeping surface for additional person. I’d chalk this up as mistake on my own and not push too much against dvc since the information is accurate.

noted & done

I think if you have more than two kids (we do), you learn very quickly that only two resorts sleep 5 comfortably in a one bedroom: BLT and AKV (and now DLV). And— if your kids do not want to share beds, you basically need a 2 bedroom. Once our kids hit 12+ we started booking 2 bedrooms, unless we were only traveling with two of them.

It was always my understanding that there are bed surfaces for 4 (king size bed in the bedroom sleeps 2, sofa bed which was replaced by Murphy bed sleeps 2 in the living room). You can bring a 5th person, but it's your responsibility to bring an air mattress and sheets if you want some kind of bed for them. I'm surprised that cast members even offered you an air mattress.

But I appreciate that it's confusing. If you are stressed out and in a hurry, you might not realize what you would be getting.

Agreed that is what I said above.

We keep an air mattress in our owner's locker for these types of rooms. It is nice that I don't have to get it out now for the 1 bedroom at SSR. I think people said they couldn't add the 5th sleeper under the TV at BCV, BRV and BWV do to the door placement to the studio which is a shame.

I was also equally surprised that they offered an air mattress!!

Add poly tower to your list! Slept 5 very comfortably there
