Bad end to accident at Disney

A family who uses the same sitter as us just came back from DW. During their trip the grandmothers foot was run over by a scooter. She didn't think it was too bad so just let it go. She ended up getting it looked at when she got home. Turns out she had undiagnosed Diabetes. By the time she finally got to medical help the infection was too bad and she lost her toes.
Please know that this is NOT meant to stir up the great scooter debate. I just can't believe that this is how a family's magical vacation had to end. :(

Although of course it is very sad that she had to lose her toes, I can't help but think that if this accident led to a diagnosis of diabetes, it's not all bad. If it had not happened, how long might she have gone without the diagnosis?

I was thinking the same thing. Better she found out about it now. She can try and get her blood sugar under control with diet or medication.

Absolutely! I don't know what her BS was when they checked- but I can only imagine! The body gets used to being in that state so it was prob. Alarmingly high.
(I like the Polyanna thinking!!!)

A horrible accident that may just very well have saved her life.
On a different note - is it just me, or do grandmothers get a bit ornery about going to the doctor? My grandmother was visiting us a couple years ago and DD happened to crawl down behind her for some reason, trying to get something I think, just as my grandmother stepped back. Well she stepped on DD and rolled her foot. I could tell instantly she was hurting, and it swelled up really badly, but she REFUSED to go see a doctor. So she puts it off, puts it off, finally almost a week later she finally decides to get it looked at - she had broken her foot in 3 different places.

It sounds like a blessing in disguise. Had she not been hurt, she might have gone undiagnosed for much longer. I hope everything is downhill from here. :)

I have to admit I am the same way (and I'm not a grandma!!!) even though you'd think I would know better, being an RN! I can't believe she walked around on a broken foot though- I don't think I'm that tough!! Now that's a high pain tolerance!

Some people do have a high pain tolerance but, if she was diabetic, she may have had neuropathy, and not felt the pain as much.

RNs make the worst patients..I'm guilty of that. :)

I was responding to mshanson3121's story about the high pain tolerance- but somehow the quote got a little funky so it reads wonky !!! You are correct in reference to my story-bc of her diabetes she didn't feel much pain! And she was comforted bc it really didn't bruise (really bc of decreased blood flow)....both of these made the infection grow rapidly without her even knowing! But in mshanson3121's story it sounds like her grandmother was just being stubborn and walking around on a broken foot- that's pretty tough!!!

In 2009, I had an accident with my car. Tree limb in my driveway so I got out to move it. Forgot to put my car in park so it started rolling down the driveway. I caught up to it, grabbed the open car door and was slowing it, but I tripped and the car ran over my left foot. Stopped the car at least. Went to the hospital for a broken foot. Found out my diabetes was out of control, was diagnosed with a heart condition I had since birth but was never diagnosed and because of this accident found out shortly thereafter I have kidney disease. Had I not run over my foot, I would be dead right now. So sometimes accidents like this can be a blessing. Glad it was discovered!!! :) Best wishes going forward.

Well, that is horrible, and good at the same time. Glad she got it diagnosed and now has the opportunity to get it under control. Sorry it took getting run over by a skooter, and losing toes to get to that point though.

If it had not happened, how long might she have gone without the diagnosis?

Yep. While some may look to blame this on an ECV, more blame can be found from not having regular physician visits with their PCP (at least yearly labs). At least once you hit 40 years old, develop a relationship with a PCP and plan on seeing them yearly. Most young healthy people don't NEED yearly visits to their PCP, but let them make that determination. Anyone over the age of 65 should see a PCP (not urgent care, not ER visits) at least once a year.

Sad story for sure.

not just grandparents. we just found out my Uncle had a heart attack several weeks ago while alone in the house ( we recently lost my Aunt)and it took him until this past weekend to actually go to the ER for the chest pain. three stents and an overnight stay in the hospital later, my cousins are having to browbeat him into taking care of himself.

Yes. Great-grandmothers are worse. My mother-in-law was looking after my grandson and she went out onto her back deck to look at something. She tripped over a nail that was sticking up (very rare instance with her, trust me - not the tripping but having a nail sticking up on her deck). She tripped an fell hard and scrapped her leg on the deck and ripped a large chunk of skin off the leg. But, because she had my grand son (her great-grandson) and my daughter-in-law wasn't home yet, my mother-in-law just put some gauze over it and went on with the day. My daughter-in-law got home, saw what happened and lit into her grandmother-in-law! She ordered my mother-in-law to the urgent care center and asked why she hadn't gone earlier. My mother-in-law said "because of the "young one" (he's eight years old and plays on his own, reads and colors on his own and isn't not a loud kid). Turns out, my mother-in-law had a VERY nasty cut and if she hadn't gone in when my daughter-in-law forced her to, she would have had an infection. That was a month ago and it still gives her problems since they couldn't stitch it up since the skin around the wound had started to die.

Similar story - food court at Pop. Woman crashed her scooter into my ankle. She didn't even say oops or sorry or anything!

Broken ankle - now held together in fusion with plates & screws.

I hope HER ankle feels OK! Mine hurts!!!!!
