Backpacks for carry on

Have others used a backpack as a carry on bag on Jet Blue? I checked the measurement and they seem to correspond but wanted to see if others have done this. I haven't flown with the kids before and we are trying to find enough carry ons for the 6 of us. Thanks

A school sized backpack is fine for a personal item. Even a backpacking size backpack is okay for a carry-on if it fits in the overhead bin.
