Backpacks/fanny packs question?

I've only been to Universal once (last year). I remember on a few rides - if you have a backpack, you have to put it in a locker. What about fanny packs? Do they let you wear them or do you also have to store them in the locker? I found it to be a pain to put things in the lockers.
Thanks,
Cindy

I was there this past January and didn't have to put the backpack in a locker? I wore a fanny pack too....

As a general rule, you can not carry anything on the majority of "adult" rides at either IOA or the Studios. My advise would be to take as little as possible so you don't have to fool with it.

The following rides require riders to put all "loose" articles in lockers. When we were there last week, they were making anyone with backpacks OR fanny packs use them. After a while, we got used to it and it only took a minute or two to do the fingerprint thing and get my bag in to a locker.

Studios:
MiB
Mummy

IOA:
Hulk
Dueling Dragons

Also, on Dr. Dooms's Fearfall, there's a little box/tray to put your things while you ride.

We usually take a backpack full of stuff to WDW. This my first trip to USO. What is the "fingerprint thing" you refer to? I guess we'll be using those lockers. Thanks. :sunny:

Anyone ever take a backpack on wheels? Would that be feasible? Figured you could just leave it with the strollers.

Hi,

The way the lockers work is that by the entrance to each of these rides, there is a bank of lockers. They are free for the first hour and 40 minutes (more than enough time to wait and ride). The lockers are set up in rows, and in the middle of each set there is an electronic screen that has instructions how to use them. What you do is use the touch screen to say you want to rent a locker. It then asks you to put a thumb on the fingerprint reader right below the screen. If it reads the print adequately, it then asks you to put the same thumb on again to confirm. If it gets the two good readings, it then tells you what number locker you have. That locker has a little light (some of them red, some green) that is blinking when it is unlocked for you. You open the locker, put your stuff in, close it, and push the lighted button to lock it. Remember your locker number!!! Then you go ride the ride. When you come back for your stuff, you go back to the same screen, and use the touch screen again, but this time you tell it you need to open your locker to retrieve your things. It will ask you the locker number, you punch it in, and then it will ask you to put the same thumb you used to rent the locker onto the fingerprint reader. If it matches, which it should, your locker is then automatically unlocked and you can retrieve your stuff. It sounds more complicated than it is, but after the first time it literally took less than a minute. The only delays were when people in front of me at the screen either couldn't figure it out (I ended up explaining it several times) or had trouble getting their fingerprints to register. I think most of the time they were pushing too hard or moving their thumb or something. If you forget your number or have other problems, there is an attendant there to help. We stayed onsite, so we had Express pass with our room keys, and we rode those four rides over and over again, so we used it a lot! A little inconvenient, but not a big deal. Have fun~

Thanks so much! That sounds easy enough. Its a great idea too, rather than using a key. The few times I went to TL at WDW, I rented a locker and then had to carry the key with me, which was a bit inconvenient at a water park.

Thanks for the great info. I always take a rolling backpack everywhere we go w/ frozen waters, snacks, change of clothes, etc. Best investment I have ever made!

If you don't remember your locker number, it will tell you after it scans your thumbprint (or whatever finger you used to scan originally)....so, don't freak out if you don't remember you number! We had a hard time remembering it sometimes because we went back (FOTL via RPR) about 3 or 4 times in a row to ride....no biggie...the computer told us our number! :thumbsup2
ETA: the attendants are usually good at catching you if you have a carry-on bag of some sorts and will tell you to store it in a locker.....i saw a "mom" with a purse get on DD w/ her son, and they wouldn't let her ride cuz she had her purse...kicked her right outta there.......but, ya don't follow the rules......you would probably lose anything you carried on DD anyway....I did see a flipflop and a nice pair of sunglasses someone lost........

We have never been able to carry our fannypacks on Mummy, but never had a problem on Hulk until this last x-mas. When we go during the winter months, I always were a vest over my T-shirt and I keep my fanny pack on-off to one side and it is not visible and have never been asked to show what was under my vest. Obviously not possible during summer months, but an option during the colder times of the year. I do not like the locker system, I am too excited to get on the ride and it drives me crazy to wait behind other people at the lockers. The only thing I keep in the fannypack is a small container of sunscreen, tickets, and small digital camera. I use it because of the zippers to secure the items. I believe that is a safer alternative to having the same items in my pockets.

We had to put everything in the lockers for all but MIB....there they told us we could keep our fanny packs on....?????

Thanks for the great explanation! They didn't have this when we were there 6 years ago!!!
