Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. The last time I was at Disney was 7 years ago. Now that my sons are 15 and 19 are there any reasons to take a backpack into the parks?

What do you want to have with you at the parks? It's really a pretty individual question. Some just put a wallet in their pockets and go. Others pack ponchos, water, photography gear, etc.

We try to travel as light as possible. Sometimes one person will bring a drawstring backpack

I was thinking of ponchos, sunscreen, foldable water bottles

Any reasons you have to? No. Any reasons you want to? No one else can answer
We do not bring a bag, even with DGD9 is with us

We are all pale and HAVE to carry sunscreen with us, so we will always have a bag of some sort. Add a couple of refillable water bottles and the bag check is more than worth the savings if buying water all day.

My 15 year old son prefers to carry NOTHING in the parks. I make him put on a hefty layer of sunscreen in the morning since he won't carry it with him. He usually has a little bit of cash (but doesn't even need it since we always allow him to have charging privileges on his Magic Band) and his cell phone and off he goes! In the past my DH has worn a really ugly large fanny pack and I just gave him a few things to carry so I went "bagless" as well. I did decide to get a backpack for our next trips however, so I can carry extra sunscreen, a sweatshirt so I won't freeze in the air conditioning, etc.

Its really up to you. I take a Camelbak with pockets to hold my keys, poncho, lens wipes, and some snacks. I use a Camelbak because i'm constantly hydrating.

Disney is pretty backpack friendly. I'm the mule for my family and carry one small backpack with ponchos, sunscreen, water bottles and miscellaneous stuff. It also comes in handy to stash glasses, hats, etc for rides where you want to put stuff away temporarily.

On our first trip, my wife and I were the mules for our kids.

But on our second trip, we bought them each a Camelbak with pockets so they could carry their own stuff!!

I use a Baggalini bag (cross body). I carry a light jacket (for cold restaurants), foldable rain jacket, sub screen (we are all fair skinned), SPF Lip Balm., reading glasses, camera, cell and extra flip flops incase we get a good soaking. every thin light weight and the bag is red, I carry a marker and have Characters sign the bag!

I carry a small bag too. Need lots of sunscreen and my medication. I do find that you are inclined to carry more with you if you have the bag. Bit of a catch 22!

My kids are college aged now. The only time I take a bag (string bag) is when I anticipate rain and I'll bring rain jackets/ponchos. Other than that, the cargo shorts do the job (phone, keys, etc)

If you are trying to go ultra light and still want to carry sunscreen you can purchase individually packaged sunscreen from Amazon in little pouches and just carry a few of those. Then you could get by with a tiny bag or no bag. I personally am so fair skinned that I practically use a bottle for me and DD over the course of two days...

We only take a backpack (drawstring bag, really) on days we are expecting to need our rain jackets. I don't mean for the pop-up showers that are common in the summer, I mean the last 3 trips we have gone on, we have encountered a tropical storm at some point. Other than that, we don't need a bag at all. My kids are teenagers too, and if they want to bring something, they are welcome to take the bag and carry it. I usually carry a water bottle and put my phone in my pocket. If we bring sunscreen in, we just put one of the small sticks in DH's pocket.

This is something only you can answer. I have to take a back pack due too needing medical things, and then just park things and a cross body bag will not work due to some back problem. I would think about what you need ( like sunglasses, wallet, sunscreen, extra) and what will what you need fit into a small cross body, back pack , pockets). and work for you to carry all day long for me cross body bags will hurt my back in an hour or less, so this is not ideal for me. Other it would not be a problem.

hope this help you find what works for you.

How long on average does it take to get through security with a bag?

I'm curious how this worked out for you? How old were the kids? Did they keep the bags on? Even on rides?

We thought about this. May do it for our next trip. I like the idea, but just worry that they'll want them on and off, and I'll end up schlepping their bags just the same. Thanks!
