Back to school - Fall 2021

My youngest will be heading back to college Aug. 30 th I think. I'll be on my vacation at Disney and spending a week with my sister :) It's local so no need to Mama worry about getting her all settled in. Yes, I needlessly worry about my girls. No matter where they are in life at the moment :) I'm a work in progress :)

This is my first year with only college students. It feels weird!

Our youngest will be a college sophomore. Our oldest started school in 1999. All those years of life revolving around the school calendar.

It surprised dh and I how easily and quickly it became a distant memory.

Our house has been full all summer with 3 college kids home. Our home looks like a storage unit right now.

One will leave on Sunday to go back to his apartment 3 hours away to continue a year of pharmacy rotations.

Our youngest catches a flight out at 6 am Sunday for a 2 week course in Arizona. We will mover her to her first college apartment mid August.

The other just moved out of his apartment and back home for a year yesterday. He's trying to get in med school next year. He starts a medical scribing job locally next week.

Our nest was empty, but filled up fast again.

My oldest flew the coop for good with covid, I had 4 home this summer, 3 will be in college in the fall. With the vaccine, my house got normal again, kids sleeping over, friends coming and going all of the time, backyard fires, no more soccer games, xc meets, just our 23 year old who’s been working remotely since March so he came back in May. As a SAHM of 5, this is going to be rough. Our lives were so busy! I loved it.

Not much to report here yet. My step-daughters will be going to college in August. One is a freshman and the other is a junior.

My kids don’t go back until Sept 1. It better be full in-person is all I can say. I expect they’ll have to wear masks.

I’m always shocked at the states and places who go back to school so early. Somehow back to school in early/mid August just sounds wrong- it’s still summer!

Younger son doesn't start school until Aug. 19th, but with soccer starting up, his summer is quickly ending. He'll still work mornings for the next few weeks (practices are at night), but he'll be busy.

Older son is scheduled to be on full time Co-op this semester, so we don't know where he'll be until he landed the job.

Back to show is around Labor Day here in Pennsylvania. I've work in an industry where interact with a lot of school districts, and there is only one school district I know of that would have started school by now. It's in west Texas. Never got around to asking them why school started at the end of July.

Today was back to school for staff in my county.

My wife grumpily went back to work today as her two months off came to an end. My daughter is a senior in college and also was back to school today in another county, starting her student teaching by learning what goes on during pre planning days. We move my son into his college freshman dorm on August 15th.

It's all exciting but real soon the house will be real quiet. I guess it is a good thing that I start going into the office a couple days a week soon.

How is your family's back to school going?

It's going to be rough. I know we live in the same area, and my wife is a teacher that is going back as well.

Our kids will be in 3 different schools. 5:30am wakeup calls are going to be brutal. Logistics of getting everyone to their place will be interesting at first. One loves the bus. One will now be alone on bus, and may ride some days, but with mom the other days. One doesn't have a bus, so I will take him and we will have to sort thru the pickup process.

My job is going back to the office part-time in September, I'm hoping for lots of flexibility to pick up the middle kid.

There are several schools here in Arizona that have already started.

School starts Aug. 25th here, with sports starting the week prior. The state hasn't actually come forward with their guidance but I know the local district is planning full in-person, no hybrid option. Remote may be allowed for limited specific circumstances to be determined on a case-by-case basis, but it would not be a district-provided option like it was last year. I think the big question is masks -- I've heard the local elementary schools (preK-8) plan to require masks but I'm hoping they don't try to carry that into the high school. DD is just looking forward to a more "normal" year, going to school every day with all her classmates/friends.

I thought I was done with the "back to school" threads 12 years ago :rotfl: but alas, I now have a little guy starting PreK in a couple of weeks:teacher: We're getting ready to leave in few hours for one last Summer get away before switching into scholastic mode

3rd grade teacher here. I was in person last school year, 5 days a week, from the very beginning. Students and teachers wore masks and desks were 6 ft apart. I was really proud of my district for being able to make this work last year. We gave parents a choice if they wanted in person or remote, leaving it up to individual families to decide what was best for their own situation. It worked out pretty well.

This year we are not offering a remote option, but we all still be wearing masks and will be 6 ft. apart.

School starts here (BC, Canada) September 7th. Youngest is going into grade 6, oldest is starting high school (grade 8). We've been told school will be 'close to normal as possible.' My kids were both in school full time last year, we were one of the only provinces in Canada that didn't see a return to virtual learning at some point so we were very lucky. I'm not sure if it's province-wide but for our school district at least (the biggest one in the province) there will be no options for virtual/blended learning this year, like there was last year. You either send your kid full time or you un-enroll them.

School starts August 23rd or in 648 hours...not that anyone is counting. Our boys were virtual last year, but we are planning on sending them in-person this year. We still need to decide if they are riding the bus or if I will be driving them. No official guidelines have come from our district, but I expect anything they release to change 3 or 4 times before the start of school.

That’s great if homeschooling works for you. I have no desire to homeschool, plus working full time makes that impossible. My kids will be in 5th and 8th grades. My kids are happy to go back in person. Oldest got his vaccine so I am not as worried.
Same. Kids go back day after Labour Day - and I can't wait!

I spent a year and a half trying to juggle remote learning with 2 kids, and working FT from home, on my own. I have no desire for it to continue. The amount of stress I endured, trying to micromanage a G7 and G1 kid and my own job? Nope.

I have one dose, and my eldest has had both her doses, and they both know I expect them to mask up regardless until there's no cases in our region (we're at about 20 a day - which isn't too bad) - and I cannot WAIT to be back in the office. I need that work/life/school divide. My kids need to be away from me, I need to be away from them. They both need to be in a classroom.

They are unsure if kids will be forced to wear mask in school here yet. I know so many friends/neighbors that after last year have decided to just homeschool and not send them back at all. One of my friends is a teacher and she decided to quit and stay home and homeschool her kids.
My daughter has been working virtually from her house and has zero desire to go back to an office, she is interviewing for jobs now that are going to stay remote.

My oldest will start 9th grade next Monday. New school, first time in public school and so far it’s been a huge hassle. We registered him last February and we still have not been given the passcode to access the districts portal. He finally saw his schedule this morning via the individual school’s site, but cannot see his bus schedule, order lunch, etc until access to the county portal is allowed. I’ve contacted the school multiple times and been brushed off; yesterday I emailed the assistant principal in charge of that area.

My daughter starts 6th grade on August 9 at the private school both have attended. She’s almost done with her summer work and I have my fingers crossed for teacher assignment. We should receive her welcome packet any day.
