We're moving to NC over the summer & I'm wondering when schools typically end the summer vacation. My reservations are 8/5-8/12 & I may have to change them if it's too close to my kids starting in a new school.

Thanks,
Joyce

Do a Google for your kid's school district, and then look at the district calendar.

Hey! We're moving to NC over the summer too. (Or maybe Rock Hill SC) Need to be near the airport for hubby's work.

Where are you moving to?

Wow! So you can relate how overwhelming it is. My DH & I both grew up here so it's hard to leave.

We had decided on the Cary/Apex area but then a friend of mine who moved to Charlotte 2 years ago told me I should look near her :confused3

Do you have children? In the fall mine will be in 4th,6th & 8th grade but they seem OK with the move after looking at the huge houses they could have in NC.

I have had thoughts of cancelling the August trip but can't bring myself to do it. The rooms are already paid for & we have AP's & tickets from the past summer.

Should be an interesting (and busy) New Year!

Well, I have kids, but they are 20, 18 and 18. The twins will graduate from high school this spring. Hubby and I are downsizing, if you can call that. We currently have a five bedroom house in South Jersey and are looking into a four bedroom. We decided on the Charlotte area because we have been there several times and really like the area. DH is a consultant and just needs to be near an airport. When looking at houses in that area we were first concentrating on the north Charlotte area, (Mooresville, Huntersville), but were told by many that the commute to the airport from there was horrendous and that we should look into South Charlotte or Rock Hill area of South Carolina. Taxes are cheaper in South Carolina and homes are gorgeous. Will be doing a new build and now we're just waiting for info on a new development going up that we're interested in.
It is overwhelming, we both grew up in NJ and have family here. My husband also has family in NC and GA. Good luck!

We moved from Chicago to Houston a year ago today. I cried for 6 weeks before the move! As it turned out it was the best thing we have ever done! We LOVE Houston and never want to live in the cold again! As a reward for such a great 2005 I am planning my dream trip to Disney in May. Before our move (our kids were 5 and 7) I tried to keep as much as possible the same and didn't blame anything "on the move". Keep the trip! Good luck!

They passed a law last year that no public school in NC can start prior to August 25th and they must end by June 9th. You should be fine. Welcome to North Carolina! We live just west of Charlotte. :wave2:

CarolinaBlue you're right and the first day of school in 2005 was Aug. 25. Prior to this they had been starting around Aug. 3. We live on the southeastern side of NC about 2 hours from Charlotte and 1 1/2 hours from Raleigh (Cary/Apex). I was the cause of my husband relocating down here from Baltimore. You'll love the weather (not too cold but still have a winter) although the summers can get really muggy. Welcome!

That's exactly what I needed thank you. I tried searching on my own & had no luck.

This is true, unless the district has a waiver, if they get alot of snow days, they can start earlier. So, if OP happens to look into a mountain region, they might start earlier. But if you stick to Charlotte, it won't be before Aug 25th.

Joyce,
If you're definate on NC you're fine. If you're considering SC check the school district there. We're moving into the Clover disctrict and they're starting the first wk of Aug. I think Rock Hill, Ft Mill, and York are starting the same wk.

I just noticed that I'm the only NC native on this thread! Oh, well. Welcome to NC, everyone! :wave2:

Not true. I was born and raised here. Have never lived anywhere else!

Hello fellow Carolina fan!

That's great! I'm a Tarheel too. Just PM'd CarolinaBlue about it. Some of my best years were on campus in Chapel Hill, but we might actually have some of those Dukies on here too. For those of you moving to the area you'll find that nothing reigns more supreme than college basketball!!

I miss Chapel Hill a lot, and have some great pictures of my kids at the Old Well when we have gone back for visits. Looks like there is A LOT of new construction going on. When were you there? Do they still camp out for basketball tickets and drop/add nowadays?

I was there in '75 and '76. Camping out in the cold overnight in front of Carmichael was the best!! They actually came and opened up the auditorium in the middle of the night one time because it starting snowing and they said Dean Smith called them and took pity on us!! Don't know if it still goes on at the Dean Dome or not.

Sorry to hijack this thread!! You'll learn all about it when you relocate here!

As a recent native of NC and a teacher from several of the school systems there...(we just moved to SC a year ago)...do your research on the school districts before you select an area. Many of them are going through some big changes right now with districts, busing, etc. and school lines are being "altered". So, do your research on the schools and districts along with choosing a house. There are some really great schools all over the state, be selective!

You will LOVE  NC- I miss it really bad at times!!
