Back to school dates in NC

raises hand proudly! me, me, me :)

:confused3 Be careful. Being a Duke fan could be a bannable offense. :teeth:

Actually, we had a lot of fun at my house with our allegiances. My mom and dad are Duke fans - actually my mom works at Duke and my dad worked at the VA which is highly affiliated with Duke. My two brothers and I are Carolina fans. ACC tournament time was always a good time.

YCFAN - I was there after the Dean Dome was built. One year we camped out in the snow for tickets for the NC State game. Some really fun times and good memories.

Yeah I'm Methodist and Duke is a Methodist affiliated school. My brothers were both Duke fans and to this day I was considered the traitor for turning Carolina Blue! MY children of course have been raised properly and only cheer for the Tarheels. I knew you Blue Devil fans were out there lurking!!

My SIL lives in Cary and her kids (now in grades 6 and 3) go to "year-round" school. They start at the beginning of August and go to the end of June, but have several 3 week long breaks--October, late Dec.-early January, April among others. She keeps saying how wonderful it is. As a teacher I'd hate it, but to each his own. Make sure your kids aren't headed into such a system if that matters to you.

I was telling my DH about the year round schools tonight. I would think it would be hard for children to stay focused having such long breaks. I know my youngest would not do well.

I too work at Duke but have been a fan all my life. My dad was a Duke grad so our house was biased. Unlike some Duke fans I tolerate UNC fans....barely. :rotfl2:

Year round schools were/are not an option in my school district but I always thought they were a good idea. One of the arguments for year round schools was to have the breaks spread evenly over the year so the transition to the next grade level required less time spent reviewing information forgotten over summer break. AND...Just think of the off season trips to WDW you could make on those breaks. :)

I live in Raleigh, and we did the year-round thing from K thru 8th grade, primarily so we could go to WDW during offpeak times. Year-round schools are usually magnet programs that you opt into, but they are doing serious reassignments right now and some areas could be assigned to year-round schools as their base. We loved the fact that DD got a break after every 9 weeks, but the 3 week break was just long enough for her to rest up and be ready to go back. Now she's in a traditional calendar high school, and it's a bigger adjustment for DH and me than it is for her. We're trying to figure out when to go to WDW next!

Oh yeah, I'm a Dukie too. My dad was a Duke grad and it would have been unforgivable to pull for anyone else. Nothing like the rivalries here! Born and bred in NC - and love it!

Jumping on the NC thread. I live in Cary. I'm a State fan Go Pack just getting ready to watch the game and of course surfing the DIS. LOL I don't have any children yet but the guys that I work with love their kids in year round school. They love the flexibility of varying travel schedues. I also know alot of teachers and a couple that aren't already in year round are trying to get their next year. They say its really hard to get in since so many teachers want the open slots. They are opening more and more year round here so you might want to look into where your kids will be going to see what that school is schedule wise.

I gre up in Charlotte well from 6th-12th grade and its a good area too. Good luck with your decisions.

They passed a law last year that no public school in NC can start prior to August 25th and they must end by June 9th. You should be fine. Welcome to North Carolina! We live just west of Charlotte. :wave2:
I teach near Greenville, NC and we start back August 25. :teacher:

Hey, I was there in that snow campout at Carmichael!

1978 Carolina grad and I don't tolerate Dookies well at all.

I send tuition checks to Moo U, though -- for those of you from other places . . . that would be N. C. State.

I'm a Tarheel born
I'm a Tarheel bred
and when I die
I'll be a Tarheel dead.

Go TARHEELS!!!

P.S Welcome to our fine state.
