Back from Wonderland:wAlice,Madhatter,ChesCat&White Rabbit 11/11Thank You

Since you asked about it: Halloween really isn't celebrated in Germany as it is in the US. But October 31 is an important day in quite a large part of Germany as it is reformation day. Supposedly Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on October 31. Since large areas of Germany are Lutheran, it is widely celebrated (and a public holiday in some areas). In more catholic areas November 1, All Saints Day, is celebrated. It is a tradition to visit the family grave and to decorate it with heather or such.

Halloween is only adopted from the US. Some people tend to dislike it as it is mainly commercially driven. Especially it isn't common to go trick or treating.

Trick or treating is connected with another holiday here in Germany: Saint Martin's Day on 11/11. The story of Saint Martin (not to be confused with Martin Luther) is that he cut his coat in half on a very cold day and gave it to a beggar so that the beggar would not freeze to death. Children make lanterns for this and sing songs. They used to go from house to house performing their songs and getting treats. Today nurseries and churches will have their "St Martin's parade" where all the children walk through town with the lanterns and end up at the nursery/school/church for a small party. Oh, and people eat goose for St Martin.

Ok, now we have the trick and treating and the lanterns taken care of - the costumes take place in January/February: Carnival or Mardi Gras (we call it Fasching, pronounced liek fushing) between Christmas (or to be precise after Three Kings Day on January 6) and Ash Wednesday. Costumes are less scary and more fun, very often they are overdone uniforms as this was the only time ordinary people could make fun of the king without getting repression.

Ok, I guess you did not expect an essay on German holidays... :rolleyes1

Hey J,

Emily first started collecting Molly because there was a rumor that they were phasing out Felicity...but she really wanted Felicity and they brought her back...she has a lot of the accessories and she has them packed up lovingly in her closet...she said she wants to hold on to them and give them to her daughter or grandaughter some day...(everyone once in a while she takes them out to play/look with...:goodvibes-she also has the bitty Baby and a lot of those accessories too...

I think, a doll you loved as a child can still be great company as a teenager. Nodnol and I had some dolls which were handmade - from a company called Käthe Kruse, the biggest name in Germany for dolls - we still had them sitting in our bedrooms during college. They were pretty and nice bit of decoration that made us feel at home! :goodvibes

Just catching up again.....
EEEK! On the missing camera. I can just imagine how you were feeling. So glad that an honest person found it. Yay for Disney magic!
Have I missed pictures from Halloween?

Hey April...is that 2nd ticker new...I knew about the January trip...but is that Christmas trip with John new...?...:cool1:

I have to get over to your P/TR...

I just recently starting watching Dexter...

I really enjoy it...(well not so much the grisly parts but the dialogue...his internal dialogue...is very clever/very witty...I get a huge kick out of him...I think I would actually like him if it wasn't for his ummm...problem... and even as it is...I find myself thinking he's not such a bad guy...unless you're a BAD guy or /gal...that is...;)
:lmao: At least he can channel his issues into doing a service for the community. :rotfl2:

Dexter is such a great show. I got hooked on the audiobooks & was SO psyched when I heard they would be making a show out of it! I have John totally hooked on the show- it is his favorite now.

I am hoping to book that trip for the first or second week in December 2010... IF I can make it work.

As you know, I am still in the process of catching up and I just read your episode about "channeling the force". That was such a lovely story about Rabbit and his new found skills as a Jedi night. And thank you for including the story about his school. That is so sad and disheartening. I assume he is in a new school now and blossoming. How empowering to actually skip a grade. Good for Rabbit....way to go! :thumbsup2

I hope he continues to excell in school and I hope he continues to break some of the stereotypes that exist out that.

Lovely episode.

All caught up triple P!!! I hope everyone is feeling better in your house!

Your last few hours at MK sound lovely, barring the camera thing! I would have freaked out!!!!

OH I'm so glad that you were able to get your camera back!! I would have been freaking out too!!!! YAY for the Good Samaratin!!!

I can't believe we are on your last day!! What an amazing adventure this has truly been!! I loved everyminute of this trip with your family and of course Nobby insists on me telling you that he loved Jedi Mickey's appearances as well!!!!

Hi Patricia! I've spent the last couple of days reading your PTR and TR. I thouroughly enjoyed both! :goodvibes

I'm a big coffee drinker/book lover too. Hannah and I have spent many times watching Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. I've got a very old copy of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass" that I bought at a flea market a million years ago. I don't even know when it was published because there's no copyright information in the front of the book. I've also got an old copy of "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There" that I bought in a used book store on a visit to Chester, UK. It's got a date of 1924. I bought an old copy of "Bleak House" by Charles Dickens on that trip as well.

I've been reading the Peter Pan books by Ridley Pearson and Dave Barry to her at bedtime. Have you read any of those? I highly recommend them! We're currently reading Peter and the Secret of Rundoon. I've also recently become enamored with the Sookie Stackhouse books. I'm finishing up the next to last book and will have to wait for Dead and Gone to come out in paperback!

Did you ever read The Eyre Affair that Floss recommended? I've read all of Jasper Fforde's books and love them! I love the literary references, the play on words and the quirky humor!

How exciting about your trips next year! I can't wait to hear all about them!

Yeah for another Jasper Fforde fan! I am very greatful to my sister for picking up his first novel by chance - I loved all the Thursday Next books (and are eagerly awaiting the next one supposedly coming out in January 2011...). :goodvibes

But that's more than a year away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh this sounds fabulous! I liked the Nursery Rhyme books but not nearly as much as Thursday Next. I think I had footnoterphone withdrawal. This looks great and I love that it's something totally new! It won't have the literary references though so that will be interesting to see how it flows compared to the others.

But the best news? He is coming to my favorite bookstore again! I'm SO there this time with my mom! And probably both sisters....

Thank you so much :goodvibes

Hijack over, sorry!

Well Hello......I haven't been around the past 3-4 days and I have a lot of trip reports to catch up...as well as gracefully finishing up my own...;)

Looks like there was a bit of a book discussion going on over here why I was gone...Love it...few things I love more than books...I can't wait to read and respond...:thumbsup2

I was tied up on Friday with Em's belated 15th b-day with 23 or 24 14-15 year olds here...Eric stayed to chaperone...while I got David out of the house to see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs(poor little 7 year old doesn't get why he can't hang with the big kids all night...)...the kids (teens were great but it was a late night by the time everyone left and we got to sleep...I think I had 4 hours...which doesn't work so much for me anymore...:confused3

We were then off to NY the next morning-left at 9...had to get to a Family Jazz Concert by Lincoln Center by 1...grabbed some yummy French like bakery food at Bouchon Bakery in the Timer Warner Building first and then went to concert...afterwords ran over to FAO Schwartz (because "It is one of David's favorite places ever..."-his quote

That's were Em and I saw these...

100_1224.jpg

(They are soft Madame Alexander Alice Dolls...hmm...I think I might want one...have to think about it...btw...I look like I could use about 24 hours of sleep...:confused3)

Next morning we went to the MOMA...where amongst many other interesting things we saw these in the sculpture garden...

100_1236.jpg

Yes I still look exhausted...but you can see through the window to the tright of me...the Paris Metro sign...I thought it was Kismet to use when I start my PTR...as was this...

100_1244.jpg

Eric thought this sculpture looked like a hidden Mickey who'd been on a bender...:confused3...I kind of see it...

(I'll talk a little bit more about this when I start the ptr...I want to respond to everyone's posts, check out everyone else's TRs and then finish this gracefully and begin the PTR...

can't wait to read how everyone is doing...missed you all...:grouphug:

Hidden Mickey on a bender!!! :lmao::rotfl::rotfl2:

What a fun weekend! I have a darling 8-inch Alice by Madame Alexander -- those dolls are always so cute! I think you need one...;)

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl: It DOES look like a hidden Mickey on a bender!!!!!

I love essays on German holidays.:thumbsup2..I think it's really interesting to know how other people celebrate the Holidays...What I like about Halloween is that I think in some form it's been celebrated for a very long time...I think people like to do the scary stuff in a controlled way because it goes back to a time where people couldn't explain their enviroment and wanted to gain some control back-the scary stuff represented all the stuff that you can't explain...plus it takes place at least here....during harvest...and while there is a bounty of food...people also know that the earth is going to be going to sleep soon until spring ...that must have been very scary at one time......

I think, a doll you loved as a child can still be great company as a teenager. Love dolls...many really pretty ones come from Germany...actually a lot of pretty, well made toys are German made...like Steiff Bears...etc..

Just catching up again.....
EEEK! On the missing camera. I can just imagine how you were feeling. So glad that an honest person found it. Yay for Disney magic!
Have I missed pictures from Halloween?

I know God Bless honest people...no you haven't missed the Halloween pictures...Eric found a gnome app...and thought is was funny to gnome the Halloween photos so I have to go back and find the ungnomed ones...-this gnome is not our Jen's Nobby...just some unknown pretender...;)

:lmao: At least he can channel his issues into doing a service for the community. :rotfl2:

I'm impressed that he was able to channel his "personal issue" into a community service as well...:lmao: I have to read/listen to the books-I've heard some people feel they are even better...

Aww...I hope you can make your December trip work...:thumbsup2

As you know, I am still in the process of catching up and I just read your episode about "channeling the force". That was such a lovely story about Rabbit and his new found skills as a Jedi night. Lovely episode.

Thanks-that whole Jedi Academy is definitely one of my top memories from our trip...:goodvibes

Thankfully he is doing really well...his grades/tests are awesome...but I'm his mom and I know when he needs something that he isn't getting and there is more to school/learning than just the academic piece...it's a microcosm for life...and he needs more support learning to think socially...but I'm working to ensure he'll get it...:rolleyes1

All caught up triple P!!! I hope everyone is feeling better in your house!

Your last few hours at MK sound lovely, barring the camera thing! I would have freaked out!!!!

We are all pretty good just tired thanks... except Eric has an ongoing really ugly cough that I insisted he go to the doctor's for-he has an appt today...What is it with men and going to the doctor's?:confused3

OH I'm so glad that you were able to get your camera back!! I would have been freaking out too!!!! YAY for the Good Samaratin!!!

I know -I hope in some way that person knows how much that return meant to me...:goodvibes

Jedi Mickey is missing Nobby-I think he make just have to visit him again...in fact we had a gnome imposter show up on Halloween claiming to be Nobby wanting to meet David but JM handled the situation and chased him off-having met Nobby he knew it wasn't him...something about the Dark Side of the force messing in gnome business...:confused3

:welcome:...Ah...good coffee + a good book= :cloud9:

Love Alice in Wonderland (obviously :lmao:)...meant the book though this time...the language and humor and original illustrations-although there are some really clever illustrators doing great new interpretations too...:goodvibes I'd love to go back to England and go to Oxford on a sort of "Alice" tour...

Ahh...Dickens...haven't read Bleak House (yet)...love Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist and the Christmas Carol which I think is so good-and often a lot of the good bits get cut when they film it...curious to see the Disney version...;)...a version with Patrick Stewart was done a couple years ago-one of the best IMHO...have a copy signed by his grandson who had come to PHiladelphia...probably not work much except sentimental value...:goodvibes

Bring on the book enabling.:lmao:..I haven't read the Pearson books but have heard really good things about them (they sound like fun holiday books...)

and thank you -I knew I had missed a book recommendation (Floss)...The Eyre Affair...I'm writing that down right know...hmm...library or B & N...what to do...what to do...

Yeah for another Jasper Fforde fan! I am very greatful to my sister for picking up his first novel by chance - I loved all the Thursday Next books (and are eagerly awaiting the next one supposedly coming out in January 2011...). :goodvibes
