stayed for two weeks from 21st October at Port Orleans riverside, family of five, children aged 18,11,9

Flights were via Atlanta with Delta, cost £2400 for the five of us, food was typical airplane food, entertainment was fine, everyone found movies to watch, Atlanta was easy and the flight got in early flying both ways, overall good value.

Resort
We have stayed here before, good value as it could accommodate all five of us in one room, we like the boat trip down to Downtown Disney. As with all resorts you can spend some time waiting for buses, which can make you late for dinning reservations.

Food
I was concerned at the cost of this, if I bought a dining Plan it was around £1500 for quick service and £2500 for better plan, one table and one quick service meal.

My concerns with dinning plan,
My 11 year old would be charged adult rate, but in reality would eat off the kids menu
We would be more interested in the starters than desserts
If we took the quick service, we would not want to eat fast food for two weeks.

Have had a tot up of what we spent over the two weeks on food and drinks $1907 about £1200 ( includes some tips, not all as paid some cash) much better than the dining plan!!!

Instead I ordered from garden grocer, beer for hubby and eldest son, lots of soft drinks and water to take to park, cereals, milk, fruit, cookies, snacks and crisps. Total of this £100. (not added to above total) I did have to request a fridge on arrival and it was delivered next morning, I believe this saved us a lot on breakfasts and snacks

Got five refillable mugs, although we used them less this time, due to the drinks I ordered from Garden Grocer and the fact there was a coffee machine in the room. (cost of these included in above total)

We ate at the following restaurants, T Rex,Fultons Crab House, Planet Hollywood, Rainforest Cafe (animal kingdom), 50's Prime Time Diner, Sci-Fi diner, Boat Wrights (in resort), Character Breakfast at crystal palace, Sanaa (animal kingdom lodge) highly recommend! Table service meal in Universal.
We also had a few donuts/snacks, kids had some sweets, alcohol at Epcot food and wine festival, quick service meals and a couple of evenings we just got pizza and pasta at resort.
We also used discount vouchers received from Disney travel company at a couple of restaurants.

Parks
We had 4 days out of disney, hired a car which we collected from Dolphin hotel, spent a day at Discovery cove, very expensive but worth it, at least it included food and drink all day.
Used the discovery cove pass to go to Sea World, this was pretty quiet, I don't think I would go again, just spent half a day here.
Spent a day in Universal, got tickets slightly cheaper through eBay (someone had to cancel holiday due to illness)
One morning we went and did the free boggy air boat trip (voucher from Disney travel company, who I booked with) this was good fun, nice to see landscape rather than built up theme park areas, we did see an aligator and were able to hold a baby one, so would recommend.
Also fitted in some retail therapy!!!
I spent a long time planning this trip with advanced dining reservations and we spent on average a day and a half at each of the four parks and half a day at both the water parks, we also found time for crazy golf, swimming in the resort pool and toasting marshmallows at the resort campfire (my two younger boys thought this was great fun, especially as you can eat as many as you like).

Personalised our magic bands in advance, these were fab, one of the children had an issue with getting into the park on day two (fingerprint I think) but this was sorted in under two minutes by cast member at hand with iPad. Somewhat of a shock going back to the real world and not having magic band for charging etc.

The fast pass + again worked well for us, some I booked before leaving the UK, on a couple of occasions we even changed them whilst at the park with only a few minutes to go before we were due to use. Spent less time waiting for rides this visit, so very happy with this service.
My Disney experience is great when it's working, but at times it just would not load in the parks on the free wifi, I guess due to the amount of other people using it at the same time.

WORD OF WARNING
Unless you want to feel like you have taken a bath do not ride Kali River Rapids. Every part of me was wet, the driest part was my hair, it was necessary to buy a towel when we got off to try and get some of the water off, this was not fun, even if we had taken the rain capes that day I still think our shoes would have been soaked. The worst of it was the ear bashing I got from the rest of the party for suggesting going on this ride as they were all soaked and miserable. Even though it was a warm day, I did not dry off all day and we had to go to lunch at Sanaa still very wet. My leather belt stained my top, which I have not been able to get out, so would not say the ride was worth getting that wet for, a bit wet is fun, this was not fun. Funnily, lots of clothes and flip flops for sale near this ride, I resent being soaked for Disney to use this as an opportunity to increase sales on clothing!

Can recommend the fairfx card, the exchange rate was better than I could get elsewhere I was able to load it when the rate was better, easy to top up, avoided bank lousy exchange rate and fees for using a debit card, simply left my debit card for charging at reception and went and paid it off every so often with the fairfx card. Excellent idea, also helps you keep an eye on what your spending as its easy to get carried away.

One observation, I don't think the cast members were as jolly as on previous visits, and no longer have interesting information or singing from bus drivers!!!

All in all great holiday.

Sounds like you had a great time. We avoid the ‘wet’ rides for the reasons you mentioned! POR is a pretty resort, we have stayed there pre disney cruise in the past, good location and we also like the boat ride to DTD. We don’t go for the dining plan unless its free, only then does it feel like value for money. Are you planning the next one? :goodvibes

Sounds like you had an amazing holiday, thanks for doing the summary.

On our last trip in Oct 2012 we were there for 10 nights and had the free regular DDP. We worked out that we saved about £1800 on food and drink over the holiday so for us it was brilliant :thumbsup2

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: This is one of our all time favourite rides and I ALWAYS get absolutely soaked :rotfl2::rotfl2: Last year I ended up going into the loo and stripping off and wringing out the water from my clothes and then standing under the hand dryer for about 10 minutes :lmao::lmao:

We love it and I have to admit we do chuckle at those wearing those ponchos as our view is if you don't want to get wet don't go on the ride as that is the point of it ....... but hey each to their own :goodvibes

Thanks for your report! Gosh, you really gave me pause regarding the river rapids ride. I haven't gone on this in quite some time. Two years ago, we all made the decision to not ride for this very reason. No one wants to get soaked and then spend the rest of the day soggy, especially shoes! But, I would like to ride this ride...so I think we'll bring a change of clothes!

We're going in February so it will depend on how cold the temperature is, for sure!

I'm curious what you thought about the food you ate.

Which restaurant made you groan with pleasure? :goodvibes
Which made you groan with disgust? :upsidedow
Which seemed like a huge waste of money? :scratchin
Which place would you most recommend? :thumbsup2
What one thing are you thinking about and wishing you had the recipe?

:)

Love the dodo for freedom it gives you and lovely not watching the pennies but have always got "free ddp". Not sure I d pay cash for it as probably works out more as you said.

How does the grocer you used work?

Glad you had a great holiday :)

Your family is a good example of why the DDP isn't cost effective to pay for :thumbsup2 We would never buy it and only use it when we get it free :goodvibes

Oh and you reminded me why we always do the wet rides last thing before returning to our resort - I have been that soaked :scared: on both Kali & Splash :rotfl2:

Sounds like fun!

If you didn't like getting wet on Kali River Rapids, I suggest you never go to Islands of Adventure! :thumbsup2

Did you try Ripsaw Falls over at USF ? They make Kali River Rapids look like a light drizzle

At Bush Gardens, Congo (Kali like) is so wet, that, at the exit, there is a human sized dryer (a family of 5 fits inside) you put $5 bills in to have warm air blown onto you (you never get dry with $5, not even $10 ... makes Disney's clothing and towels sound more appealing ... in the end you get to keep them :) )

When I don't want to get wet, I wear a $5 walmart rain poncho on those rides. But at that point, I thought it was a good thing to remind all "unsuspecting future victims" of those wet rides that Kali at Animal Kingdom is probably the dryiest of all wet rides you can find in the Orlando area

first timers be warned :)

thanks for your report - really interested in reading how much you spent on food whilst on site. I've budgeted 1K for food for 2 adults and 1 child (7) hopefully I will be quids in then :cool1:

I'm not a fan of the wet rides either - don't mind my hair getting wet but that's it, wet underwear is no fun.... for me anyway.

What surprised me about the water ride, was I don't ever remember getting that wet in previous years, the log flume in Magic Kingdom was very dry in comparison.

Regarding food, My favourite was most certainly Sanaa at Animal Kingdom Lodge, food was great, service was good but without being hurried, place was lovely and relaxed, all felt very quiet and peaceful after being in the parks, only downfall, the airconditioning! Why do the Americans love it soooo cold. We spend a lot of time in Spain and do without air con, even with a cardigan I was cold. Kids went outside to warm up and they enjoyed watching the animals, some of which we could see from inside the restaurant. The baby Zebra was our favourite.
The kids meals in the Sci-Fi diner, in the studios was very good value, healthy and lots of it, in fact I would say the food there was good value.
My hubby just loves Fultons crab house, my 18 year old realy enjoyed I think it was fish cakes here.
As my husband said the only problem with the themed restaurants like, T Rex, rainforest, planet Hollywood, is that essentially the menus are all very similar. But I think T Rex was pretty good,I had Fried fish tacos, too much for me to eat, but they boxed it up for me to take away, it was very nice, hubby enjoyed his Guacsaurus burger with extra Burger Patty, agin he couldn't eat it all.
Flame Tree Barbecue in Animal kingdom was best quick service, kids meal again good value, and just looking at what everyone else was eating, there were a lot of nice looking meals, very good portion sizes which I think you could easily share.
Worst value and not that grea was in the hotel food court of port Orleans, however the pizza was fine.
Yes want to go again, October was great because of the weather, the food and wine festival in Epcot and just getting some last minute sun before returning to very cold England with it getting dark so early. I am considering the vacation club (buying a resale) but need to give this some research!!!
