Back from seeing Karate Kid

Our whole family (4 to late 30s) loved it.

I was surprised by how well Jaden Smith performed in the role. I had really thought the remake would be better with an older kid, like the original, and I still think maybe it would have been better, but Jaden Smith was so charismatic that it worked.

I appreciated that the foul language was toned way down in the remake.
The in-your-face violence was a little on the rough side, but just a little assurance that it wasn't real was enough for my young kids.

We don't buy a whole lot of movies on DVD, but I think this one may be a keeper.

when we first heard they were releasing a remake, dh and I both balked, too. we loved the original, why bother remaking it, etc, etc. I think they did exactly what they should have done, though, and varied it enough that it really was great even for those who loved the original.

I can't wait to see it again. and I've just added the original karate kid to my netflix instant queue. the kids are interested in watching it since dh and I kept making references to it on the ride home. curious as to what they think when they compare them.

spoilers, so highlight to read: In the new one I especially loved the visit to the temple(?) where the woman/snake, etc, were. gorgeous and facinating. the guy on his toes!!!!! it was all just breathtaking to begin with, but so love that the importance of chi, etc, were stressed. Just think these are great movies about reaching out for goals and such.

nice to hear will and jada are doing what they can to keep their son grounded. I'm sure that is no easy feat given what they have.

It looks good, but I'm not sure if I can watch it...I'm afraid I still have a crush on Ralph Macchio. I always had a thing for the baby-faced guys. The first guy I really loved looked just like Wally Cleaver.

The language in the original is stronger. I rented it to watch with my DD a couple of years ago and I was surprised. It was rated PG -but I think PG used to be a little more risque when there was just PG and no PG-13.
You may not even care -I just thought I would mention it

I agree with you about the beauty of the Temple scene in Karate Kid 2010.

Ok, just watched the original. And as much as I loved the new one, the original is still better! Mr. Miyagi has so much more character!!! Funny though, watching them so close together, there are several scenes in the new one that are pretty much word for word from the first, including the line I quoted earlier about only bad teachers.
So, even if you LOVE the old one (which I do, and it's still my favorite) the new one is also worth seeing, they are both really good films.

Man Jaden must have worked so hard, I was blown away by the scene on the corner wall, wow!!

DS and I just got back from seeing it, too. :)

It was a cute movie (and LONG) but Ralph Machachio was much cuter. ;)

Very predictable, I thought.

You have to check out funnyordie.com. Ralph Macchio did a hilarious video centering on his "young, good boy image" and how he is trying to make it more "hollywood". :rotfl2:

We just back from seeing it and LOVED it. The original came out when my sons were young and in fact my younger son got involved in karate because of it. We have all always loved the Karate Kid movies. Anytime any of the first three are on, I tend to stop and watch them; I think I will do the same with this one.

Jaden Smith is an extremely talented young man and has many talents! I think he will be acting rings around his dad (who I am a huge fan of) in a few years. Although I like the originals and Ralph Machachio, imho, Jaden did a much better job. Also, I think the training and tournament scenes were much better because of Jaden's abilities.

Okay, that was hilarious!

We just saw it and LOVED IT! The movie was remade quite well....I'm glad because this new generation can enjoy as Most of us did with the first version. It's a very good portrayal of being an underdog and overcoming your fears. :thumbsup2

Jaden was great; yes he was very fit and agile. I felt so sad for him though during that scene btwn him and his mom when he was crying.

We will be adding this one to our DVD collection!
