Had to take 3 y.o. Selena into the ER at 1am. She was wheezing and "barking" and having trouble breatihng. Her temp was 103. She has croup. They did a breathing treatment and gave her an injection of Rocephin. We have to see her doctor this am, which is now only about 4 1/2 hours away. She sounds a little bit better, but she is still wheezing and "barking". :(

not sure if they told you at the ER but years ago (things may be different now)we had to take my kids into the bathroom with the shower going and a lot of steam. That did help them breath a little.

Hope she's doing better soon!

My sister's girls get this a lot and along with the hot steam, they said to try breathing cold air. They suggested wrapping up warmly and sitting outside.

The cold air is what helped my neices. I hope something helps. That "bark" is scary.

I hope your DD feels better soon. Both of you definitely need some rest!

Oh Boy, can I sympathize with you. My DD (4) gets croup or close to it EVERY winter at least twice. Its so scary to see them struggling to catch their breath. Steam definately works and the cold air too as someone said. Also, warm apple juice sipped through a straw is very soothing to them after the fact. I usually end up sleeping with DD in the living room to keep an eye on her and have her sleep more upright with the vaporizor on as the dry air from the heat being on makes things worse.

Good luck.I hope she better soon.

You have my sympathy!

Now that my children are older, there are some things I miss from their younger days, but I had almost forgotten about the "all night steamy shower falling asleep on the bathroom floor" vigils!

(Plus the stat runs to the ER/Doctor's office for breathing treatments)

Maybe I really don't wish they had stayed tiny just a little bit longer. This is one of the hardest part of parenting, but you will survive! Chin up.

;)

Poor thing! I do hope she feels better soon!

I hope she feels better soon! This sounds very familiar. A few years ago the same thing happened with DS. I tried the steam in the bathroom, but it didn't seem to help much. He really had trouble breathing. I ended up calling 911, and we were in the ER at 2:45 a.m. Same thing with the breathing treatments, a shot in the butt :( (poor thing). They called it Stridor. The ER doc told me to leave him in the steam longer if it happened again. I thought...well if I continued to wait, he wouldn't have received meds from the medics in the ambulance or all the helpful meds at the hospital. Seems to me that if just steam would have done the trick, he wouldn't have gotten all the other stuff that really helped!

Yikes! I'm sorry and hope she feels better soon. Hope you all get some rest today!

Oh man, I totally understand. We went through this last year. It was just awful. We did the treatment with the mask over DS's face. It was one of the worst things I've ever had to watch. Seeing him struggle with that mask on, freaking out, at 3AM on the morning. I cried just as hard as he did. :(

I am hoping that we won't have to go through that again this year, but my doc said it's very possible. He said a flu shot might help protect against it, but it's not fool-proof.

For us, wrapping him in blankets and sitting out side in the cold helped the best. The steam bath didn't see to help at all. Maybe we didn't sit there enough.

Ugh, bad memories....... hang in there, and good luck.

I hope this passes quickly for all of you!

Showers of pixie dust for Selena and hope she's doing better soon.

My 8yo is asthmatic so we are all too familiar with that bark and ER visits. We have a nebulizer and do treatments at home sometimes but sometimes that's still not enough.

I hope Selena is feeling better:D

DS never had croup, but he had asthma and the struggling to breathe thing just breaks your heart:(

I hope Selena feels much better really soon! Poor little one! Both of you need to go get your rest.

Bless her heart :( Spending the night at ER is no fun for anyone.

I hope Selena is much better very soon and that you can both get a nap today.

{{{Hugs}}} to both of you. Croup is so scary. I'm already worried about it and my baby isn't even here yet. I hope for both of your sakes that she's feeling better soon.

Arggh! The doctor's office isn't open today! So, I guess I'll just be watching her real close and hope we don't have to make another run tonight!!

We tried the shower AND the cold outside air last night and neither worked, so that is why we ended up in the ER.

Maybe with a few doses of antibiotics in her though, she'll be okay.

Thanks for your well wishes!

Hoping she does well, Kristy. Always so tough when the little ones hurt or are not up to par. {{Hugs}}.
