Calif. Baby Sitter Picks Up Wrong Child
Calif. Baby Sitter Botches First Day on Job by Picking Up Wrong 5-Year-Old From School

LONG BEACH, Calif. Oct 4, 2006 (AP)— A baby sitter bungled her first day on the job by picking up the wrong 5-year-old boy from his elementary school, police said.

Angel Guerrero was taken by mistake Monday when the woman arrived at the school and took him without knowing what the child she was to care for looked like, said Sgt. David Cannan.

The mix-up caused alarm when Angel's grandmother came to the school and was told someone had already picked him up. Police issued a missing child alert, and his name and picture were broadcast on several TV stations.

Meanwhile, the baby sitter had no idea she picked up the wrong child until her employers returned home.

"The baby sitter said 'This is your son,' and the parents said, 'No, this is not our son,'" Cannan said. When the parents saw Angel's picture on their TV screen, they immediately called police.

School officials didn't notice the mix-up, Cannan said, because Angel willingly left with the woman. Meanwhile, the boy she was supposed to pick up waited for several hours until school staff called an uncle to pick him up.

"There's a lesson here," Cannan said. "What an opportunity to tell parents to talk to their kids, and communicate with their caregivers. This young child was full of trust, and he sees an older, caring adult and just walked off with that person."

What parent sends a babysitter who has never seen their kid before to pick him up from school??

How in the HECK did she not know what the kid looked like she should be watching???

Seriously, I can't imagine a parent sending a complete stranger to pick up a 5 year old.
I also wonder why she was able to take him so easily. I know he went willingly but didn't any staff notice someone new was picking up the child?

I was wondering the same thing. We've had other people pick our kids up from school in the past, but they're always close friends or family -- people that our boys know and will run to when they see them.

I hope they got a better one.

I think the parents and the school are more at fault than the babysitter.

I agree.
I think DisneyVillian was making a joke about getting a better kid? :confused3

I agree. The parents should of had the woman meet the child ahead of time. :confused3

I think she meant she hoped the parents got a better babysitter.

She meant better kid.

Based on the parents, I'm guessing that the original isn't all that bright.

Ambiguous phrasing is the bane of my existance.

Did the kids have the same names? I mean surely at one point she said 'Bobby', how was your day? and he should have said "who's Bobby?"?? Right?? : Sorry...I just read it again...Angel.......but STILL!!!! :confused3

That's what I was thinking. :sad2:

OMG, the sitter had not even met the kid!? :sad2:

Although it was a bad move on the parents' end, I agree that ultimately the school should be at fault. It never should've happened!
