Good morning Dis parents. I need some advice. My 14 week-old spits up constantly. 2-3 times after every bottle during the day. The only time she doesn't spit up is when we feed her and put her to bed, so she is laying down the whole time it is digesting. She has a lactose sensitivity, so she was on Similac sensitive formula, which worked great until a couple weeks ago when the spitting up started. I called the pediatrician, and he wants us to try the Similac for spit-up, which we started yesterday. So far there is no change. We burp her part way through the bottle, and after the bottle. We've tried keeping her upright, but that makes the spitting up worse. We give her smaller bottles more often, still no improvement. The only think that works is keeping her laying on her back. Now she keeps coughing, and I think it is due to throat irritation from spitting up. The pediatrician says it will take 7 days to know if the new formula is helping. Have any of you been through this with your kids, and do you have any tips for reducing the spitting up? She is thriving and is not losing weight and seems perfectly happy.

Thanks!

My DD had this (way back in the dark ages) and there really was no solution. In her case it was reflux. My biggest problem was that she spit up on me a lot and all of my clothes were stained at the shoulder because I would misplace the burp rag or be too lazy to use it at all, or just not expect it.

It stopped when she was about 13 months old.

All three of my kids were huge pukers. They spit up constantly. Me and the baby were always soaked. They would all spit up 3-10 after each feeding, and huge amounts. This lasted for up to a year when they were pretty much completely on solid foods. They were all breastfed (one only for three months, formula after that). My mom said I was the same way and so was my DH. All my kids were healthy and gained weight and they didn't seem bothered by the spitting up. So I didn't worry about it because my doctor said it's very common. We just did a lot of laundry. I swear my kids spit up way more then they kept down.

My 3 kids were huge spitters. I was always surprised that they gained any weight because it seemed that they spit up almost everything they drank.

Putting them in a bouncy seat or car seat bucket for 30 min after eating helped a little, but not a lot. I remember my ped saying that it gets better once baby is upright more often, so basically when they start pulling up to stand, cruising, and walking. Two of my three were late walkers, so we dealt with spit up for most of the first year with them. Once they were walking and eating more real food, it stopped.

I bought lots of cloth diapers to use as burp cloths. They're really absorbent and helped save a few of my shirts from being totally soaked.

Try burping after every ounce of formula. Might ask your doctor for Zantac. Also try adding a small amount of rice cereal to the bottle to help thicken the formula. good luck!

It's good to know it isn't just my kid who has had this problem. You don't know how much better you have made me feel.

Baby is just sprinkling Pixie Fluid. Baby must have been kissed by a fairy.

My grandson used to give us lots of fairy pixie fluid.

Did you try a different bottle? Our ped had us switch to Dr. Brown bottles, which helped a little. We ended up ultimately having to switch formula but they grew out of it.

We have the same issue! My 5 month old would spit up the whole bottle. :thumbsup2 We tried EVERYTHING. He was put on zantac which helped a tiny bit. We tried the similac for spit up (which is on clearance at Target right now, the pre made, so scoop it up while its 50% off if it does work for you) we tried enafmel AR (added rice formula) and pretty much every single other formula you can think of including prescription ones. What finally worked for us was rice cereal in the bottle. 1tb per 4 ounces. Much much better! But it caused constipation at first. We tried oatmeal cereal that made him super gassy, so back to the rice cereal. You have to fool around with how much at first. I still give him the zantac, but I am not sure it does anything. The rice cereal really helped a LOT. And the puke now with less volume is thicker and easier to manage. Much less, but still puking.

Every single item of clothing I own was stained from spit up, liquid dawn on the stain left overnight before washing did the trick to get the stains out mostly.

This is the only thing that helped my son when he did the same thing. He had reflux, and 12 years later he still has issues with it from time to time.

Both of my kids were major spitters!!! They spit for what seemed like forever. The best part was my my daughter crawled really early, so she would crawl and spit as she went, all over the carpet! They finally outgrew it, but nothing we did could stop the problem until then.

My sister was a spitter-upper. The pediatrician put her on a soy formula, which solved the problem.

DD 20 mo was a severe spitter upper. We would have to change her entire outfit 2-4 times a day. It was so annoying.

Went through several formula changes that never helped. She finally outgrew it.

This too shall pass!

My 2 month old grandson has had no problems since switching to Enfamil Gentle Ease.

My first did this. He was on mostly breast milk. I started pumping soon after he was born because I got tired of him spitting up on me! We covered the sofa with an old comforter and put an absorbent pad down on top of that. We would prop him up slightly in a boppy pillow (also covered with an absorbent pad) on top of the absorbent pad and bottle-feed him in that position. He seemed to like it best if he was still while he ate rather than being held. He still would spit up most times, but at least the clean up was easy--roll up the comforter and put down a new one! We did sooooo much laundry that first year and our water bills were enormous, but now, 7 years later, we laugh about it.

Cereal in the bottle as well. We used Barley since the Rice constipated.

Oh this brings back memories.:rotfl2:

My DD (now 12) used to throw up every single time we'd feed her - what looked like the whole dang bottle! :scared1:

The only difference with my DD was that she would be ok (most of the time) if we put her upright in a bouncy or exersaucer and just left her alone...for at least 30 mins. Sometimes it didn't matter and she'd still throw up, but sometimes it worked.

I just remember times where I'd just finish feeding her and one of her brothers would reach to pick her up and everyone in the room would shout "DON'T TOUCH HER - SHE JUST ATE!" :rotfl2: It was so funny because every time we did that she'd belly laugh like she knew exactly how close they came to getting thrown up on. :rotfl:
