We used a sling carrier with both of our kids when they were tiny and absolutly LOVED it! Ours has been recalled, so I'm in the market for a new one for baby #3. Any suggestions? I would like to have one that will be relatively cool for us and for baby for when we are outside. We have a front/back carrier, but they aren't the best option for newborns who like to stay curled up.

Try looking on www.thebabywearer.com

There's tons of people with different carriers, and an awesome for sale / trade board.

I had a Maya ring sling that I loved. I also had a HotSling that I hated. I think with the HotSling what I didn't like was the inability to adjust the size. IT seems to work well if you fall into the middle sizes, but if you are larger or smaller, it doesn't seem to fit right.

Sounds like you had a sling-rider. If you liked that, you will LOVE a pouch sling. So much more streamlined, supportive, safe and easier to wear. Hotslings are widely available, and I bought several pouches off of etsy and hyena cart when my girls were newborns.

The one we have is the Infantino. Our kids are small and we got a ton of use out of it. I would prefer a pouch style over one of the wrap slings. I'll check out the ones suggested. :)

I just bought a Balboa Baby adjustable sling (endorsed by Dr. Sears) a few days ago at Baby Depot. I'm not very familiar with slings, but I guess this is considered a pouch style. I like that it is adjustable so either me or DH can use it. Once I got the proper adjustment, it is pretty comfortable for me to wear. (With this type of sling, they say to position the sling high enough so that you can easily kiss the baby's forehead.)

I had swore that I would never use one of these things, but that was before I had a baby that likes to be held constantly.

If you prefer a ring sling, I really love the Over the Shoulder Baby Holder. It is adjustable, positioning/ use is so easy, the fabric breathes, and the shoulder is padded!

Yep, that is the sling rider. Very unsafe and has had many recalls. A pouch is going to be much better for you and baby!

IMO there are a few things to consider when buying a sling/baby carrier:

1. Most important is safety. Is the baby's chin touching their chest (like in the Sling Rider)? That will cut off air flow and can lead to suffocation. Like a pp mentioned you should always be able to kiss baby's head or it's just not safe. A baby recently died in a ring sling as well. Not because the sling was defective but because the parent curled them up in a "C" position and the baby suffocated.
Also, part of the safety issue is having a carrier that does not harm baby's developing spine or hips. Carriers like the Bjorn where baby faces out basically suspend the baby in an unnatural position from their crotch. Picture being suspended from your underwear for a while. Not comfy. Carriers like that can pinch nerves and cause problems in developing spines and hip joints. Basically, stay away from anything that faces baby forward with their legs dangling out.

2. Longevity. You want to get your money's worth. So you want to be able to wear the carrier in different ways, wear it comfortably for long periods of time, and as baby gets older and heavier. Many good carriers are very versatile and can be used from infancy-45lbs. The Bjorn says it can be worn to 33 lbs, but the way it's designed. . .it would not be comfy to wear a baby over about 20 lbs. Also with a good carrier as baby gets older you can do a back carry.

3. Comfort-YOU want to be comfortable right? Consider that as well. A more versatile carrier (such as a soft structured like the Ergo or a Mei Tai) can be worn in front or back. Again, don't get a carrier that dangles baby from the crotch for their comfort. And a carrier that has the option of a back carry will be much more comfy as the baby gets heavier.

4. Price. You can do some research and find out what kinds of carriers you want (I suggest trying on anything and everything possible) and buy them used on the baby wearer.com or diaperswappers.com Babycenter even has a baby wearing swap. You get a great carrier and save some $$
