We will be flying with Travel City Direct on the Jumbo 747 and my sister in law 2b has been asking me if she doesn't pay for a separate seat for her baby on the plane does she have to have the baby on her knee for the entire flight - could anyone tell me the procedure for this as I haven't got a clue?

Haven't flown with Travel City, but normally if you have an infant under 2 and you haven't paid for a separate seat, then yes the baby will sit on her lap (I've done it and its not fun). What I suggest is to try and request a bulkhead seat as these can be converted into a skycot. Basically the panel in front of you comes up and out and a small foldable cot is strapped to this. this at least gives baby somewhere to lie and sleep if they are small enough. Normally this would be up to 9 months old but our DS was quite a big boy at 6 months and just fit in it. Otherwise its 8 hours of pass the baby. please feel free to ask any more questions,
Claire

Thanks Claire - there baby will be 15 months when we travel so will probably be to big for the skycot. Just to clear this up, and I'm not sure who told her this, but she was also under the impression that if she had a car seat type carrier then she would be able to put the baby in that and put it at her feet -is this true?

She cannot put the baby at her feet. She can bring a car saet and if there is room and it is FAA approved she can use it in a empty seat next to her (if there is one) if there isn't a seat then you will be doing pass the baby but it isn't so bad usually. If there is no seat, then the steward will either get the seat beneth the plane for you or stow it somewhere else.

You'd have to check with the airline about this one. I would guess that they will say no for safety reasons. Definately for take off and landing, baby will have a seatbelt extension from mum and will have to sit on her lap. Same goes for turbulance (quite a pain when they are happily snoozing). Is there no way you could spring for another seat? I think it would be well worth it. We are going in a few weeks and have booked a seat for DS11mths. Virgin actually provide a carseat type seat for him and he can be independant from us. Might be worth checking if Travel City have a similar thing. Also, it would just give you room to manouvere when baby falls asleep etc.
Sorry I can't help more but anything i can do, just ask,
Claire

I asked my sister in law 2b about paying for a seat for the baby but she didn't seem to keen - hopefully she will change her mind. I will speak to Travel City about the car seat thing and see what options they give her.

Thanks for the help guys :D

Having taken a two year old on our laps (no seat) when my wife was 5 montsh pregnant in 1997, I can honestly say it was a very bad idea! I'd never do it again (although we won't have anymore babies!) and wish I'd paid for seat last time as it would have been so much easier.
