Baby Names that have been done to death

I wanted to name DD "Skye" or "Piper" and got shot down all over the place. We ended up with a Bella (Isabella) and it suits her. There hasn't been another one in her class *yet*.

We do have two Katelyn/Kaitlyns on our small cul-de-sac of 14 houses.

There's at least on Isabella in every grade, 3 in dd7's grade. Here in the NE, Isabella, Ava, and Olivia are the new Sue, Lisa, Kathy! ;)

Is she a Star Trek fan? Maybe she named him after William Riker from ST:TNG.

Good question -- I think the prison from Law and Order :)

By the way, I love Celia and Cecelia as well. I got voted down for DD with Cecelia -- DH hates Simon & Garfunkel.

We had a much easier time naming our son, I must say. He started calling my belly Joey - so it just kind of stuck. DD is Jillian Paige -- and no one calls her that -- she started as jillybean and is now just the bean.

:thumbsup2 Celia is a lovely name, as is Cecelia.

Anyone else start singing...

Cecilia, You're breaking my heart
You're shaking my confidence baby
Oh Cecilia, I'm down on my knees
I'm begging you please to come home

Abby (Abigail) was NOT common when I named my daughter that.. Now its all over the place, along with Aidan.. I had NO idea it was so popular until after I named him... of course his name fits him perfectly but there are alot of them!

I was the only Helene in my school. I bet there would have been more named that if I was born in the 1900's :rolleyes1 and NO my name is NOT Helen, that was my grandmother :upsidedow

My 5 year olds have 3 friends - Abigail (Abigail), Abigail(Abby), and Abby (Abby).

Yeah they are everywhere around here too. There is another down the street from me, but I had her name picked out when I was a freshman in HS :rolleyes1 I think it became VERY popular from ER's Abby. My Abby is named after Westminster Abbey it was in a short story we were reading and I just LOVED Abby... so she's always been an Abby. ;)

We went with the bibliical and the classic. We have a Joshua Raymond, a Bejamin Jacob(Benji) and Grace Elizabeth.

We have an Abigail (Abby) too. Though it does seem to be popular as far as the SS stats go, I have yet to meet another Abby. Granted DD does not go to daycare so I would not have that as a checkpoint, but we do playgroups and classes and no other Abbys yet. Even if there are, I don't care. We loved the name, it's classic not trendy and it reminds my dad if the Abby church on the campus where he attended college, so it's special.

If she were a boy would you have called her Westminster, or just London? ;)

Brady Kennedy. Honestly just thought it sounded kind of neat together and it flows with our last name. We had a really hard time with the middle name though and seriuosly considered not giving him one until I came up with Kennedy about 2 weeks before he was born!

Brady came from my DH's obsession with the Jaws movie. My DH's family is really into movies, in fact DH and I met working at a movie theater. His cousin had named her little boy Ash after the main character in the Evil Dead movies (her favorite). In Jaws, the one character's name is Brody and my DH suggested that. I said no, but how about Brady and it stuck. It was very early in my pregnancy.

Good thing you don't live in the Boston area...folks would think you were obsessed with football and politics ;) There are tons of Bradys around here. In fact, my cousin just had a baby and named him Brady....cute name though.

At least I'm not the only one who saw "Ryker" and went "Commander William T Riker of the USS Enterprise".:lmao:

There is a new family who moved in down the street a few weeks ago. They have 3 DS and two DDs--Xanadie (a combination of Xavier and something else the mom liked, I forget what), Maximus (after the character in Gladiator), Legend, Faith and Hope.

Faith and Hope don't seem like such oddball names, but I was really taken aback when she told me the names of her other kids. She said she wanted names that were 'unique'.
What do you say to that? I said, "Yup..those are unique alright.":upsidedow

LOL about Aidan & Conor! We have and Irish last name, so I wanted to name my child something that would go well with our surname. I named my oldest (14 now) Conor, thinking I had not heard that name much at all. Well Lo & behold. . . .once he was about two, I heard "Conor/Conner/Connor" all over the place!

So, when son #2 was born, I fell in love with the name "Aidan" thinking it was a shoe-in for a unique name. NOT! LOL! I didn't know a single Aidan when I named my son, and they are all over the place now! hehehe!

Ah ha! It's your fault!!

I prefer traditional type names. My DS is named Callum which is a traditional scottish name.

I've seen a few kids with doozies for names. One girl in DS's class last year was named Isis. I also saw a mom at a local park toting a diaper/tote bag with the name "Rhiannon" on it.

My first daughters middle name is Rhiannon, I wanted to name her Rhiannon but it got nixed because no one in my husbands family speaks english and they can't pronounce Rhiannon. So she got the very french Isabelle for a first name. My youngest we were going to name Juliette but I love love love the movie Amélie so we went with that instead, Juliette is her middle name. Her name is mangled on an almost daily basis, she gets called Emily, Amelia, Emilia - she's strong enough to correct people though.

I really like the name "Jillian" and one of my DD's friends is named "Paige".

When Celia was younger and we would go to places that had live music they would sometimes ask Celia her name. They would immediately start singing "Cecilia". The would always start out strong but then realize the part about the main character getting up out of bed to wash his face having some other guy take his place wasn't the best thing to sing to a 3-year old.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: never thought about that... I love the song though... (warm & fuzzy college memory for me)

LOL - I had a name all picked out, probably thought it up in HS. However, when dd was born 12 years ago, surprise, surprise, Emily Anne was no longer a unique name! So, no Emily for me. ;)

Haha, we often get asked if we really like politics....

And, my DH is a HUGE Miami Dolphins fan and hates the Patriots and all things Notre Dame. He seriously didn't want to name our son after the Patriots and Notre Dame's starting quarterbacks. I told him that wasn't a good enough reason :rotfl2: A lot of people who know his preference for football teams though think our son's name is hysterical until I mention the Jaws story.

My youngest is Luke. He's the only one in his classes, and the only other one closest is a Lucas.

I think Luke is becoming pretty popular again. Our youngest is Luke also. I don't hear it a TON but I hear it often enough. Then again, he was our 3rd boy & we had a hard time coming up with *another* boy name!!! Took us forever to figure out names with the older 2, I'm picky about boy names & DH is also picky. Unfortunately....we both like DIFFERENT names -- so pretty soon his name would have just been "Baby Boy"...:lmao: That's what his name was for at least 2 days.

One thing I have found is it makes no difference what you name them...you will run into some problems you probably didn't think through!! My DD's name ends in "LYN" a pretty classic name & no one seems to be able to pronounce it -- they insist it's pronounced "LINE".

My oldest son's name is one that is boy/girl but spelled differently! I hadn't even thought of that since I like definite gender names but that can change depending on where you live. My DH's best friend's name is Tracy & he's a guy. Around here that is a girl's name. Leslie/Ashley are considered girl names here but I know in the past they have been boy names.

My 3rd is a fairly common name but amazingly enough, he only had 1 other boy with his name I think in first grade. I'm surprised there aren't more.

The good thing about a common name though is it would be hard for teachers to have preconcieved ideas about your child as there are too many of them to fit into a mold. Where as if your's is the ONLY one in the school with that name and the teacher had a bad experience with a prior one...hmmm... :lmao: I think in our case it's LAST name though that does the kids in. ;)

One trend I don't like is the 'nickname' types like Ellie and Abby. IMO they're cute for little kids but the full versions may be preferable to them as they grow into adults.

I don't know -- I hear this argument all the time but my name is truly Becky! It actually worked to my advantage. When all the other "Becky's" were turning into Rebecca's so then had to add their initials...I was Becky. I never had to add my initial to anything -- if it was Becky, everyone knew it was me. No guessing which Rebecca.

It has never been a problem for me except occassionally asked "is that your legal name?" when filling out legal documents but considering my DH is called something totally different than his legal name (he's a III and the name he is called isn't even remotely close to his real name).

I guess because I'm an adult with a "nickname as a real name" I just don't get the problem with it. Maybe I'm missing something, that I should have problems with it? Who knows maybe other people have the problem with it & I just am not clued in that it was such a big issue.
