There have been a couple of recent threads on the DIS, one on unique names for girls and another for unique names for boys. Both threads had some pretty cool names and (IMO) some names that were really "out there". What do you think? What kind of a name do you like?

For the sake of discussion here is how I define each type:

Unique
An very uncommon name or a common/classic name with an unusual spelling like "Jaydin" for a boy or "Brylee" for a girl.

Classic
Classic names that have been around for a long time like "William" for a boy or "Emily" for a girl.

Popular
Any name on the top-ten list from the last 10 years like "Jacob" for a boy or "Madison" for a girl.

Other

I guess anything else. Family names, names in the middle of the Social Security Administration's list of the top 1000 in 2005 (http://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/popularnames.cgi), etc.

I'm not much into unique names, as I prefer classic. We named ds Christopher Michael--not much chance of Chris being misspelled, and everyone knows how to pronounce it. If he would've been a girl, her name was to be Emily Elizabeth. I do like some of the popular names--we'd thought about Dylan for a boy (back when Beverly Hills 90210 was at it's most popular!) :p

I prefer classic names. I'm not a fan of "unique" or trendy names, nor do I like alternate spellings.

But that's the beauty of the system, I guess. I name my kid what I want, you name your kid what you want, and I'll roll my eyes in private!

I named my son an established name, but one that was not terribly popular. I grew up as a Jenny, so I wanted something a bit off the beaten path for him.

He likes his name, although it has gained in popularity as a GIRLS name.

I am not a huge fan of weird spellings, hard to pronounce, or made up names.

When we were thinking about names, our motto was 'traditional but uncommon' so I voted with classic. We didn't want anything too unique or hard to pronounce and we also didn't want to go with a trendy name and have them deal many of the same once they started school. Our kids names are Annie and Nathan. We have only come across one other Annie in the past 6 years. Nathan, on the other hand, is a lot more common then we realized. He is the only Nathan at his preschool but we hear it a lot when we are out at the mall or restaurants. At WDW, it seemed like every other preschool age boy was a Nathan.

I like unique, but not overly unique. I don't like all the celeb. baby names that are out there. (apple. suri)

I like historical names, like hermione from harry potter (hermione is a goddess's name)

I also like names that mean things in other languages. (Bestet is the egyptian cat god)

I like names that mean things to people. (Lyra is hte name of my guitar. don't look at me like that. people name insturments.)

I also like some classic names (alice, wendy, jess, lisa, lucy)

I like most boys names, but a few I wouldn't name a child (harry, larry, gary, noticing a theme here?)

I don't like really popular names, because they're way too popular. I know seven or eight Cody's. and four or five Emilys. I like both names, but theres just too many.

I guess we would fall under the unique category. DH is 1/2 Japanese and wants to name our future children with Japanese names. His mom doesn't like hers though so we're not going with a family name. We can agree on a girl name, which of course means we'll have a boy when the time comes. ;)

I picked the unique name or classic names spelled differently. I named my daughter's Makenzie and Jordyn. Different but not too different. I actually got makenzie name from the show 7th haven. The little girls really name was Mackenzie something. I loved it. I dropped the c cause I did not want people to call her Mac. And Jordyn I stole from a kid that was at Makenzie daycare :rotfl:

You're so cute Sparx.

I picked Classic names but I also like Family names. When we have a baby (hopefully next year!) it will have a family name for a middle name.

I like older classical and family names. My oldest son's name is Russell (we call him RJ) after his dad, my second son's name is Ricker (a family name) and my daughter's name is Rowan (an old name, but I discovered it in an Anne Rice book!) I also like ethnic names like Sejal, Preeya and Anyanka, but with 3 children (and no more forseen in the furutre) with americanized names, I think it'd be a bit much to add a Preeya to the mix!! :teeth:

I picked classic..but my son's name is both classic and popular(Matthew). I think most popular boys names are classic.
Not as much with girls. :confused3

In general I do not like unique or uniquely spelled namaes..but I think when it comes down to it, once you know a person with a name that you may not necessarily have liked, it becomes a regular every day name to you.

I answered my own poll and chose "Other" :). I named my daughter "Celia" which is a family name and in the 600's in that top 1000 SSA baby names.

I don't care for very unique names. While they may be OK while the child is small they will be too hard to pronounce and/or spell as the child gets older. Since a name is for a lifetime I think parents should think about how President Firstname Lastname sounds or what people will think when they receive a resume from someone with a very unique name. On the Unique Boys Name thread the OP wanted to name her son "Vader" from Star Wars. President Vader Smith. Hmmm ....

I also don't care for popular names. My DD has 2 friends named "Emily", plus the nextdoor neighbor kid plus her cousin. I don't understand why folks do it, but plenty do!

I like classic names, as long as they don't cross into popular like the name "Emily".

But ... to each their own. Name your kid what you wish. Like perlieq I'll try to only roll my eyes in private.

You're 100% right. My DD's best friend (who moved away to Mexico :sad1: ) was named "Zoli". Very unique name.

I like classic names. Our son's name is Michael. Had he been a girl, we would have named her Emily Elizabeth.

I voted for classic. However, a lot of classic names (such as Emily or Emma) are now popular again.

My dd has a fairly popular name (Morgan), but I like her middle name of Rebecca much MUCH better. I wish I had switched them around on her b/c.
