Baby Girl Name Thread

Lily is really popular again. Maybe try taking part of names you like and putting them together into something pretty but different. Like a previous poster suggested, something like Emmalyn. You can stick lyn at the end of so many names and it sounds really nice.

How about Jaenelle?

If I ever change my mind and decide to have kids, that would be the first choice for a girl.

OK of all the names you mentioned, I'll note which ones I hear a ton of around here:

Emma - very popular
Abbie - very popular (and many similar names like Allie, Addie, etc.)
Ava - very popular
Isabelle - very popular
Elise - not as popular, you could call her Ellie :)
Amy - not popular with the younger ones, just people my age it seems (late 20s)
Amelia - pretty popular here as well
Lillian - not as popular but Lily is for sure
Josephine - Believe it or not, pretty popular here, I know 2, both go by Josie
Vivian - not popular here

Honestly, even though you don't want a popular name, it seems like you are really more attracted to those since the ones you like seem to be way up on the charts, so just go for it if that is what you like. :)

You can see which ones are most popular in the US and how they rank here ....

My neighbor is Amelia and her cat is Lily... so now Lily will always be a cats name to me like Abby is a dog for some :rotfl:

Nevaeh is popular around here now.........HEAVEN spelled backwards, I almost feel sorry for the poor kids that have to explain that the rest of their lives!

I would stick with Emma since it's your  name. I went with a less popular name ("Celia") but if I LOVED a name from the top-10 I would still use it.

BTW, "Abby" is nice too (I would use the "y' and not the "ie").

If you love the name, then use it. Here are the top ten from last year: http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

DD is an Olivia. It was the third most popular name last year when she was born. Olivia is a family name so I really didn't care how popular it was or wasn't. I was using it.

I have an Abbey ("ey" - not "y" or "ie" ;)) and she has 4 other friends named Abbey / Abigail. It must've been popular that year.

I really like Emma.

My next daughter would've been named Victoria.

We were going to name our daughter Emma Elizabeth. My great grandmother's name was Emma and I always loved that name. Then while I was pregnant with dd, we watched the epsiode of friends when the baby was born and that baby was named Emma, I knew we had to change names. I knew that same thing would happen as when Ashley became a character on the Young and the Restless. My name is Ashley but not many people my age have that name. (I was born in the late '60s)

So, we came up with Nelia Elizabeth. The easiest way to pronounce her name is take the name Cornelia and take the Cor off. My mother's name is Cornelia, so we modified it for out daughter. Elizabeth is my stepmother's middle name and my mother in laws middle name.

In the end you have to choose the name that is right for you and your family no matter what other people think. We got a lot of sneers when we said we were going to name our son Russell Garrett, but dh and I loved the name.

Both Abbie and Emma are very popular here.

What about Julia? It's very feminine, but not overly popular. I still think it's beautiful, though. ;)

Good luck, no matter what you decide to name your baby girl. :cloud9:

:thumbsup2 I agree! My daughter is Julia and I adore the name, as does she. She is 11 and there are a few Julias around but not too many.

As for Abby and Emma-I don't love Abby-don't dislike it, it's just not one I would use, but I do love Emma.
It's my middle name(was named after my great grandma) and if my son had been a girl, it would have been his name.
I really don't hear either one very much to be honest-I only know 1 Emma and 1 Abby.

I love the name Abbie. There are none around here that I know of so I don't think it is overused at all. If I had to pick one of his choices, I would go with Josephine. What about Penny? I LOVE that name.

When I had my daughter, 10 years ago this coming Wednesday, we chose to call her Grace. At the time it was not a popular name at all. Now it seems it is becoming the nom de jour. Up until this year at school she was the only one in the entire school. I'm sad to know there is another one now, even if she is only is Kindergarten :rotfl:

My nieces name is Penelope(Penny) she is the only one in her whole school. It is such a pretty name.
Also my DD middle name is Grace because we loved the name but did not want her to have a Top 100 name.

To the OP ~ I also love the name Emma but both DH and I did not want our DD to have a popular name for the same reason as you... our names are popular. My DD is Annabelle :lovestruc
Here are some name suggestion
Brooklyn
Kaureen (pronuced like Maureen only with a K)
Delaine
Lila
Charity (not sure how popular)
Eloit
Jillian
Lorleai
Im pretty sure that those arent that popular

Oh I also like the name Amelia I would have called her Mia but we have a Amelia county near by.

So when I first started dating my DH (then boyfriend) in 2002 I had a dream that we had a baby girl and we named her Emma. That name was never on my radar but after that, the name just felt special to me and I always felt if we had a baby girl that would be her name. Shortly after that dream the name Emma exploded. I was one of 8 Jennifer's in my kindergarten class then later at my first job there were 4 girls on my team...3 of whom were Jennifer's. I always hated that.

I figured I wouldn't have this dilemma cause I had two boys and I thought we were done having kids. Surprise, I'm getting my girl! So I've been calling her Emma already and I do think it's a beautiful name...but I can't help but have second thoughts every time I hear another mom calling to her Emma at the store, park, etc....

Lately I've kind of started to like the name Abbie. It's pretty and it doesn't seem to be very common. DH seems to like it. He's not in love with it, but he doesn't like Emma either...he just knows that after having two boys it's my turn :) He has however lobbied strong for Vivian, Lilian, and Josephine of which I say no, no and no.

Anyway, to sum up this lengthy thread what do you think Emma or Abbie?

I like both!

I have an Emily (actually Emily Christina) not an Emma and when I chose her name over 14 years ago it wasn't very popular but, then suddenly it exploded.
The same thing happened to my sis when she picked my nephews name 13 years ago (his name is Jaedon) and it was pretty unusual then. Well, then actor Will Smith named his son that a few months (or maybe a year) later and that name exploded too(and tons of different spellings, I even heard that it's getting to be a popular name for girls too).
Sometimes that just happens so I wouldn't worry about whether it's popular or not just pick what you like.

My Emily was the only Emily in her elementary school until 3 years ago and that Emily is 5 years younger than mine so not in the same grade. She's in high school now and still doesn't have an Emily in any of her classes but, she does have an Emmy(real name not a nickname).

Well, I have two boys, but if we ever had a girl, her name would have been Katherine April.

I like Emma, and I like Emaline (spelling can be anything you want, I guess). I think I'd shorten that to Emmie.

I also like my grandmother's name == Adelle, but she was called Della. I don't hear of too many Dellas.

Other names I like are:

Kirsten
Alexandra (Lexa)
Coraline
Rebekah
Halley

Just my $.02. :)

If DS had been a girl...9 yrs ago...he would have been Emma Katherine. Then it got so popular, I just couldn't use it...luckily our next child was a boy.

I, too, am having my girl after 2 boys. I have gotten grief from family over the name she will have...but DH and I love it, and that is what matters. She is going to be Eleanor Grace, and we are goiing to call her Ella.

My point is...if you love it, and DH loves it...that is what matters. Not how popular, or what other people think. Yes...you'll hear how 'popular' it is? So what...use it if you love it!

Honestly, if you love a name, go with it regardless of how "popular" it is. Ultimately, your child's personality, charm, and talents will be what makes her stand out from all of the other Emma's and Abby's in the world. When your holding your little girl, take a good look at her. Your gut will tell you what she should be. Good luck with your pregnancy, and I hope your little one is as precious as you have dreamed!!!

I personally do not like Abbie and Emma is ok.

I vote for your Dh's name of Lillian. I love that name :)

I totally agree with this. OP - If you love the name Emma, I strongly encourage you to use it. Your Emma will be unique. You'll see, even if there are other Emma's at school, it won't matter. My son's name is Michael (age 23). Obviously, a very popular name. It's never been a problem.

Good luck!

Same here-all those names are names you see very frequently here. Vivian would be the only one that I haven't heard much but I also associate that with the hooker side of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman so I could never name a kid that :lmao:.

Ella is hugely popular here.

OP, name your DD what you want, who cares how popular it really is. Our kids have pretty "popular" names have have actually rarely run into kids with the same name and really only now in high school. In elementary school and middle school they didn't have anyone with the same name in their class. I think you will find that the "unique" names are the ones where you will run into issues.

I have a Kerri Elizabeth and a Gina Francesca, so I love those names! If you like Emma, go with Emma. I am in my seventh year of teaching, and I have not had one Emma in my class. So I guess it's popular in different areas.

I guess you guys are right. I'm about 99% sure we're going with Emma...I'm not really a unique name person, it's just that there are so many pretty girls names out there and when I was young I really did hate having so many people with the same name as me...doesn't really bother me now...to the other poster that's naming her daughter Eleanor, that was actually a name that me and DH also really liked, I had forgot all about it until you mentioned it. Congrats to you on your little girl too!
