Baby boy sizing and percentiles/genetics question

They told me my youngest would be around 9lbs. and when he was finally born he weighed in at 10lbs 12.5oz and was 22.5 inches long:scared1:
None of the clothes I bought fit. He was never in nb sizes and I had to exchange some of the diapers that I had stockpiled.
He was off the charts until about a year and now he is in the 75% for height and 50% for weight. I dont think that they always know. I would not buy alot of nb clothes. Little ones tend to grow so fast.
Good luck!

OMG! Please tell me he was a c-section!! :scared1: Otherwise, you're SuperWoman! :)

You really can't tell. All during my pregnancy with DD12, the doctor kept telling me how BIG she was going to be. She was only 6lbs 12oz, and 19" at birth. They didn't give me percentiles, but I was expecting a monster and got a baby who went home in a sleeper that floated on her like a potato sack. I couldn't even get her "little" socks to stay on her feet, which is why she wore a sleeper home instead of the pretty dress I wanted to put her in.
I wish I could post and show my pix of her in her carseat - it's hilarious, she only took up about 1/5 of the entire space available.
We borrowed her boy cousins' preemie outfits and she wore those the first couple weeks until her clothes started to fit.

That's how my daughter was! They said I was going to have an almost 9lb baby,... uhh.. no. 6lb 13oz, 18.75" at birth and a little over 6lbs when she came home. Yeah, that's one HUGE baby. I had to go buy preemie clothes for her! :confused3

My son was in the 50% percentile at my 20 week ultrasound, but the tech that did that said it was pretty meaningless as a predictor of birth weight.

He was only 5.6 at birth and 5 even when we left the hospital, so I had a low birthweight baby. He spent a few weeks in premie clothing and a few months in newborn. Since then, he has settled in at the 25 percentile for height and weight and at 6 years and 3 months wears mostly 4Ts. I am 5'4" and 125 and DH is 5'8" and 150, so I think he might end up on the smaller side.

I did have a few ultrasounds in the last month when I started having problems and on the last one I had the day before he was born, the tech estimated he was 5.8, so she was very close.

You will probably need some of the newborn sized clothing at the beginning. It is hard to dress a baby in clothing that is far too large for them. Just don't overbuy and get larger sizes as needed.

Best wishes to you.

I think I'm just going to keep the NB's that I have, they're mostly the separate tops and bottoms pj's anyway. I'm going to pick up some more 0-3, but I can't imagine that a baby that can come from us shorties is going to end up super big and super long.

I have to agree with everyone on here...they docs and US can guess, but is usually way off...told me my first dd was huge...at least 9-91/2 lbs...she was 8.3...told me my son was not growing, very concerned, going to be small, no where near as large as my first...lol, he was 8.6...my youngest dd was born 7 weeks early at a huge 5.11...she was in the 95th percentile...by 1 she wasnt even on the charts-barely hit 0...she was so tiny...she is almost 15 and barely scrapes 5 ft 3 inches..she is my teeny tiny one that would have been almost 10 pounds if born on time (so they told me)....I will agree that my son was my "biggie" though, i think he fit nb clothes for a week, if that...:goodvibes

You won't know until the baby is born. And the estimations based on the U/S aren't always spot on.

You will still need some NB onsies. DD was 8'9 at birth but still wore the NB for a couple weeks. DS was in them for a while. He was always spot on... his age = his clothing size. DD was the opposite.

My son was in the 20% in head circumference and weight when he was born. He dropped to 5lb. 12 oz. and was in preemies and NB for 2 months. Now he just turned 9 months and he is 19.12 lbs and in the 60% for weight head and length.

All of my babies have been big but my girls were all bigger than the boys.:rolleyes1 :goodvibes

The sonograms are just an estimate. They have no idea how big the baby will actually be until they arrive.

:scared1: eeeek, with both the boys I was measuring big for my dates, this one is right on track. I think I will use the "head in the sand" method to get me through the labour. Not a lot I can do after the fact if she is much bigger than Seth no point freaking out about it now, she has to come out at some stage.

I feel a lot smaller this time around than the last two times.

I don't disagree about keeping the NB's, BUT :) DH & his brothers are all 5'9" and under. (DH is the tallest. I'm 5'6" & taller than both BIL's. And a good bit taller than both of his parents.) All 3 of them were born > 9lbs & fairly long.

But, DS was born 6lbs 11 oz & wore NB for a month. DD was born 8lbs 2oz & wore NB for 3 weeks. So, keep the NB clothes until you knwo they will or won't fit.

No he was not a c-section. I am only 5' 2" and I was as big around as I was tall when they finally induced me. He did get his shoulder stuck in the process and I could barely walk for about 2 weeks after but we made it through!

We skipped right into 3-6 month... my DS was born 2 days past his due date and was 9lbs 3oz. By the time he was 2 weeks old he was over 11lbs. And he was just chunky all over. It's funny because he was over 25lbs at 6 months old!

Today he is a very skinny 7 yr old who is on the small size for his age... you'd never know that seeing him during his 1st year.

Now DD9 - the OB told me at about 8 months she was going to be a big one.... she tipped the scales at 10lbs 2oz.

Hang on to the clothes but make sure you keep receipts! My first DD was 7lbs. 3oz. and wore NB for a few weeks. My DS on the other hand was 10lbs. 4oz. :scared1:and I couldn't use anything I stocked up on, I had NB diapers and clothing he never wore, he went straight into size 1 diapers and 3 - 6 months clothes. Since he was so large they monitored me fairly closely with my 3rd, I had several ultrasounds and about 2 weeks prior to my due date they decided that they felt she was already approaching 8.5 lbs. and so they scheduled me for induction because they felt that she was going to be very large as well. She was only 7lbs. 4oz. so it is very easy for them to be off. Ultrasounds are a great tool but they are not perfect so there's no real way to know how large your baby will be until he makes his appearance.

My doctor predicted my son would be at least 10 pounds! They even induced 4 days before my due date because my blood pressure was borderline and they didn't want him to get any bigger. They measure the head and one of the bones in the leg to make this prediction. Well, my son was long and had a huge head... but barely weighed 7 pounds when he was born! I had already run around town numerous times towards the end of my pregnancy returning clothes left and right (originally told I was having a girl, then a boy, then a HUGE boy) I also refused to take the tags off of anything but the coming home from the hospital outfit, just in case. As soon as I delivered, my mom went home and took off tags and washed everything. I wouldn't buy much in NB sizes because regardless, they will only be getting bigger!

Echoing what everyone else has said. You just can't tell from the ultrasound. I had an u/s done the day before DS #1 was born. They said 11 lbs. Fortunately he was only 9 lbs 12 oz. He never wore newborn anything. Straight to size 1 diapers. He's a peanut now at nearly 6 years old. DS #2 was much more on target based on the u/s. I had many more with him. About 15 or so. He was born 7 lbs, 9 oz and only 18.5 inches. He was in newborn clothes for about a month. Oddly enough, he's our tank, weighing in at nearly 19 lbs at 5 months.

DS is in the 90th percentile and yes he has been big since birth. 8 lbs 10 oz when he was born and 14 lbs 4 oz at his 2 month appointment. We barely used NB anything and he is now wearing 3-6 and some 6-9 clothes (he will be 3 months on Thursday). The nurses in the hospital didn't use the NB shirts or diapers on him...went straight to the 0-3 and size 1. My guess is that he will be able to use 0-3 clothes for long enough to buy them. My recommendation is, don't buy NB stuff...you'll get all you need of those in gifts since he won't use them for long, but like other said don't take the tags off of those! Congrats and best luck for an easy labor and delivery! :cloud9:
