Babies and heat

Do any other mommies out there have any tips for keeping babies comfortable in the heat? This is my first summer as a mommy and because I was so worried about this issue, we put in central air in April, lol. I know she'll get grumpy, but I'm just worried I won't know the difference between grumpy sleepy and grumpy hot. Also, she gets super sweaty when she's tired, so again, sweating won't be an obvious cue for me.

I was thinking about wiping her down periodically with a cold wash cloth, but any other ideas? Obviously she'll be in her stroller, covered in sun block and in a sun hat, but just looking for other ideas :). She'll be 8 mos when we go in July. Thank you!! :goodvibes

If you're hot, then I would guess to say she is as well. Maybe look into a stroller fan, periodically wash her down, take in a lot of the AC shows and attractions and maybe take afternoon breaks so she can nap in the AC of the room. I took my son for the first time at 6 months - but we went in December and it was actually cool enough several days that he had to wear long pants/shirts.

We got a little battery operated fan at CVS that clips on his stroller. Our 3 month old completely melts down when he's hot and it's been a life saver. I think it was about $6.

We went when our youngest was 6 mos we went in summer and here was our set-up:

Edited to say I can't get my photo to work today. So here is a description of what we did:

We tried to be in the shade, there is lots of a.c. to enjoy, and we bought a stroller fan at Wal-Mart & then clothespinned receiving blankets all around for more shade. I periodically would stick my hand in the stroller to see what the temperature was in there & it was literally chilly inside her stroller when the receiving blankets were hanging around it. Nearly every hour of our 10 day trip I would have adults stop me and & tell me how jealous they were of our baby's set-up and would I push them around in there?

So it can be done. We had a fabulous time & so can you!

If your stroller canopy zips or snaps to the back of the seat, unzip or unsnap part or all of it to allow air to flow through. Our stroller canopy is large, but we bought a Rayshade to add even more shade. We went in Oct (DD was 8 mths old), but it was still in the 80's and the sun was hot. The added shade worked amazingly well!!!

Here are a couple of pics of the shade - sorry it's so big, I can't resize pics at work. In the top pic, the shade is pulled 1/2 way down - it actually touched the stroller tray when all the way down. We did that a couple of times in restaurants when she was napping to keep out the light and noise. In the bottom pic, it's up all the way and tucked into our regular canopy.

Walk through stores and in the shade whenever possible.

Dress her in lightweight clothing.

Does your DD uses a sippy? If so, keep it filled with cool water (or water & juice) and offer it to her often if you notice she's not drinking much on her own. We bought a product called Sippy Pal which attaches to a highchair, stroller or carseat and keeps little ones from tossing sippy cups on the ground - saved us from having to stop and pick up the cup all week.

Take breaks using the babycare centers as much as possible.

Good luck and have a great time!!

I am going to go along with what some of the previous posters suggested. We bought a clip on fan for our strollers that had foam "blades". This way there was no danger of fingers getting hurt but it kept our 9 week old cool. We also bought the Rayshade. It has been fantastic and well worth the money. We used it at Disney, at soccer games, picnics, etc. Make sure that she gets enough fluids too. Whenever possible we waited for others to get off rides inside the gift shops where it was air conditioned too. Good luck and have fun!
