BA reducing economy baggage allowance

Will Virgin follow their lead?
As many threads have shown there is not a lot of difference between the 2 companies in economy, this will probably sway many towards Virgin if they keep 2 bags allowance.

I am wondering what now is the difference between BA and the charter airlines in Economy?

i think i've seen threads regarding some of the american based airlines that are moving in this same direction - 1 suitcase for economy...

i only need one suitcase going to the US (and only half full at that), but there's no way i can fit everything into one on the way back...(sometimes i need 3 or 4  )

are they changing the business class allowances too?

No they are leaving buisness and WT+ alone.

thinking about this, I would not be surprised if Virgin followed suit.
I could not understand the reason for making PE allowance the same as Economy, now they have a reason to follow BA and make the difference between PE and econ again.....

My family of 4 only needed three huge suitcases last time.

I see no reason why each member of a family who travels needs two 23kg suitcases.

kevin,
everyone has different reasons for taking more than 23Kgs per person, whether it be for medical reaosn, child reasons, holiday reasons and of course, bringing back goods reasons.
Some people pack more than you, some its their first time and do not know what there is available so take more for safety.

My problem with 23KG limit is that if you take, say 25Kg, now you have to take 2 cases insead of one which could accommodate 32KG

Obi, reading the link looking at the second chart for US routes it says 2 bags for economy??

Claire ;)

I hope Virgin doesn't follow as there is no way we could fit everything in on the way back :headache:

i just went to read it now too...
it's not written well at all, but it sounds like the 2 suitcase limit is for flights between india and the US - not the UK and the US.....is that possible?

if that's what it means, then flights from the UK to the US would have a 1 suitcase limit...

nothing more confusing than trying to understand airline baggage limits....
delta's is even worse...delta by the way, now charges for the second bag when traveling between the US and europe....but reading all the rules and exceptions can make a person go cross-eyed...

Obi, you look like you are telling me I am wrong - it is my opinion, to which I am entitled, like you are yours.

Well my son has major health issues and still we only needed three suitcases, that included a lot of meds.

If this is the case (no pun intended ;)) for the US I hope other airlines don't follow suit. We buy a lot in the US and though we don't use 4 cases between 2 of us we do usually have enough to fill 2 plus a holdall and last year I needed a small backpack for a 4th piece coming back! For us it would be a deciding factor regarding which airline to choose.

Yes.
Delving deeper into the BA site it says this:

"•Customers travelling in World Traveller on flights to and from the Americas* (except Brazil) will have a free allowance of one bag weighing no more than 23kgs. This means that the World Traveller allowance will be the same for the majority of British Airways routes
•World Traveller customers travelling to and from Brazil, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and on through-checked journeys between India and the USA, Canada and Bermuda will retain a two-bag free allowance of up to 23kgs per bag
•Gold and Silver Executive Club cardholders will be entitled to two pieces of luggage on all routes when they travel in World Traveller, Euro Traveller and Domestic
•There will be a reduction in charges for the first bag in excess of the free allowance on longhaul
•The cost of extra bags on UK domestic routes will be brought in line with other shorthaul European services at £35 per bag
•Heavy bag charge for bags between 23kgs and 32kgs will increase from £25 to £30. The special bag charge for items that exceed the maximum dimension will no longer apply.

* Americas routes affected: USA, Canada, Bermuda, Argentina, Mexico and the Caribbean "

No Kevin, thats not what i was saying, however though you see no reason for more than one suitcase others will disagree, that was my point.

Its no different to people saying they see no reason to pay for buisness class seats, for Disney hotels etc.
Everyonme has a different view of what is acceptable to them thats all.

what about people like ourselves who have no shops where we live and need to buy all our clothes/shoes/medicines etc when we travel ...... I need a very big luggage allowance. I cannot even buy a pair of nail scissors here - and although I do get stuff sent through boxes, buying when we are overseas is our main way of getting our things for the next year.

Just because you pack light - doesnt mean everyone else does, also doesnt mean everyone else is on vacation, we also travel for business and take alot of things that take up alot of luggage allowance as well.

now do you understand??

Looking at the table, it states that the allowance for the USA is 2 standard bags.

Standard bags must be no more than 23kg's, so for Florida, I dont see a change ??!!??

This is an issue I took up with VA when they first introduced the 2x23kg per person. Whilst 46kg is a lot of luggage to take, it's fine if you're going somewhere nice and hot and sunny and don't need many clothes.

We travel to the US to ski and for this reason alone this 2x23kg is a pain the proverbial for two reasons. Ski/winter clothing weighs an awful lot more than summer clothes. Secondly - and more importantly - there are normally 7-8 of us travelling. US cars do not have large trunks so trying to fit up to 14-16 suitcases in two cars (or minivans) is not easy to do.

Just my opinion.

Trying to price up flights for 22/10 this year, other than the charter flights are limited to 7 or 14 day trips (we need a 9 nighter!), I don't see a huge amount of difference now.

DD and I were spoilt travelling PE to New York in April, but when there are 8 of us travelling (2 families) it is most definitely not cost effective to travel PE and reap the perks (what there are left).

Ho hum - perhaps the idea of holidaying in Europe is something we'll have to start reconsidering:sad2:

Rascal,
Have a look at my post #14.

The only route to the USA which will allow 2 x 23Kg is India to the USA, Bermuda & canada.

"•Customers travelling in World Traveller on flights to and from the Americas* (except Brazil) will have a free allowance of one bag weighing no more than 23kgs. This means that the World Traveller allowance will be the same for the majority of British Airways routes"

The BA web site is badly worded. I gather they are going to revise it as they have had many queries already.
