I think I have an abscessed tooth. Perfect timing. I see the dentist on Wed. Sigh. Fortunately the tooth itself doesn't hurt -- yet.

Just had to whine.

Oh, I hope it gets to feeling better before Thanksgiving!! You need to get some antibiotics and it will feel better.

Gosh, that could really be hurting by Wed. I'd call your dentist and ask for some antibiotics asap to get the infection under control.

Ok. . I know this sounds weird. . .but it can't hurt. I had a bump. . like an abscess about 2wks ago. I don't have dental insurance right now and I was thinking. . .Grrrrreat! But. . .I did some snooping around and learned that swishing with hydrogen peroxide helps. I did, twice a day, and it's gone. . .it disappeared after about 3 days.

Still keep your dentist appt. . .I have one coming up. . .but it might be worth trying. If nothing else it might keep it from getting worse.

There are two types of oral abscesses: periodontal and periapical. Periodontal abscesses *might* be helped by peroxide. Basically a perio abscess is an infection of the gum around the tooth. A periapical abscess is the kind that needs a root canal because the tooth is dying and the infection is causing destruction of the bone where the root hooks into the bone. Both can cause "pimples" or "bumps" known as fistulas. A fistula that is draining usually means the tooth doesn't hurt. Think of it is a pressure pot. Once you take the pressure off by allowing the infection to drain it feels better.

Good luck at the dentist, OP. Hopefully they can start getting you all fixed up before the holiday!

If the infection is just in the gum, does it still require a root canal?
