Awful experience at The Sci-Fi Dinner

Ok, I don't know if anyone else is doing this or not. I tried and tried to think of a comfortable costume that me, both girls (9 &15) wouldn't be embarrassed to wear and that I could get hubby in that was cheap. So We're going to do a whole "slumber party" theme. We're wearing pjs, slippers and bringing small pillows. Cool and comfortable or what?:smooth: :Pinkbounc ::yes::

And you're wearing this into the Sci-Fi Diner? I guess people will do anything to improve the dining experience there.

I hate the place. We ate there once when they first opened. Not only was the food bad, the films of oozing man-eating blobs, martians with humongous brains and giant killer insects being played over and over again made me ill. (at least those are some of the clips they used to show)

Definitely the worst restaurant on property that I've been to.

Well, I think this thread pushed me over. I was teetering on the line on whether to eat there or not with the bad reviews I had already read. We were going to use one of the lunch vouchers, but now I think we're just going to have dessert to check it out. I was going more out of curiousity for the atmosphere anyway.

I'm starting to panic! I'm planning our trip for our group of 13, and this was somewhere we were excited about. We were eating there for dinner. I'm seriously starting to rethink this!

Besides the poor reviews, I'd rethink it because only a few people can talk to each other the way the car seating is.

That might not be such a bad thing. I'm going with 10 other members of my family. ;)

WOW-I am soooo glad I read thru this thread-I was going to make a PS for Sci-Fi for our "last supper" at WDW. (This is our 1st trip)-I though it looked like fun, but there's no way I want to eat our last dinner of our trip at a place that gets these types of reviews!! I'm going to start a new post to find out where I should go!:)

Unless there's suddenly any sci fi lovers out there that can vouch for this restaurant, I'm looking for somewhere else. I may keep that night open so we can just choose somewhere.

I''ve only had lunch there, burger and fries, but I think I remember reading on these boards once that you can request a burger at dinner. ...You can't beat the atmosphere.

That is what i was hoping for. You see, DS is an absolute car fanatic. If it's got 4 wheels, it's got his attention. Since he loves cars so much, I thought this would be a fun place for him to grab a burger. We try to eat before the dinner menu to save a few dollars and besides, we are ready to eat by then. (Have big breakfast in room and take snacks to park). I would like to heed the warning of not ordering off the dinner menu, which is why I was wondering if we could still order a burger--even if it wasn't on dinner menu.......
Thanks!!

just a wild guess but maybe cause they are on the MENU and call me crazy but i foolishly assume a restaurant might actually try to figure out how to cook something they are charging a lot of money for:jester:

the question on whether or not you could get something off the lunch menu at dinner here a short while ago. I can't find the tread now but a couple of people said that they had in the past. I liked the look of the restaurant but nothing on the dinner menu and my schedule made it so I would have to eat at dinner time. Now however I might just cancel because I do not want to get there and be forced to eat off of the dinner menu. It does not even sound appetizing on paper to me.

If you are going to eat at Sci-Fi I would suggest trying the honey-glazed black forest ham sandwich. It is pricey for a sandwich, but DH and I both enjoyed it. You get rosemary potato chips with it. YUM!

I second the ham sandwich. It was YUMMY and I would order one again. But for the downside - My DH is a hamburger expert who would order them for breakfast, lunch & dinner if he could & he rated their burgers as a C- at best and and we both thought the onion rings were very greasy. We also didn't think the seats were very comfortable and service was also a C- at best.

I had bad food there once and when the CM asked if she could get me something else I told her no she just took it off the bill and asked if he could at least bring a dessert. I thought the food was ok but I dont order what i call "Real" food there. Salad is always safe and it was around $4.99

My wife and I ate here when we were without children and then again last year with our two children (1 & 3 yo).

Each time we went we ate lunch. Sci Fi Theatre is a lunch place. We have always ordered burgers, fries and onion rings, soda and shakes.

We never consider this a true restaurant but an entertainment establishment with expensive food.

We treat it like a outdoor drive-in theatre...and the sci-fi moview reel that loops while you eat gets a little old after a few running.

I think many go for the atmosphere and sitting in the little car tables, but a word of caution to those individuals who have never been to Sci-Fi...there are a variety of car types and some tables too. So check the table photo book at the check-in desk if you prefer a specific type of "car" seating.

ryansmom, I love your outlook! At least you'll try it to judge for yourself!

As far as what time the lunch dinner cut off is..... I know dinner starts at 4, so anything you may have for a ps before that is safe. If you get there (before 4) and they hand you a dinner menu ask for a lunch one.

Our plan is to do the same thing we did on our last trip:

Enjoy the cool, dark atmosphere as a break from the parks by stopping in after the parade. We grabbed a parade spot right by the ATAT at Star Tours to see the parade right at its start and then were right at the Sci Fi with PS (about 3:30) for dessert only. The shakes are good and large enough to share, to save on the cost.

We were seated in about 10 minutes, and the place was pretty empty, partly because of the time, partly becuase of the parade going on through the rest of the park, and partly because people on the DIS are cancelling PSs ;)

Dessert filled us up so we could do the rest of the park, see Fantasmic, and head back to the resort without starving.

We will be going for the atmosphere for this one. We usually eat about 3-3:30. I want to make a PS and I had read there were "car" tables and non-car tables. Is there something else I am missing? I thought that was it....what do you mean by "specific type of car seating"? Please don't tell me there are different KINDS of cars to sit in.... Thanks!!

You guys are scaring me! I have seen so many mixed reviews here, mostly bad. I have a PS for this too, but from reading posts in the past, lunch is the way to go and that's what I booked! I hope it's not too bad. I'll stick to the burgers and shakes. I figured Ds 10 would like it. Hope I was right. :)

I can't wait to read your review here............:smooth:

Our family really likes the Sci-Fi Diner. My son who will trun 10 while we are in the World always request that we eat at the Sci-Fi and Prime Time cafe. We have eaten both lunch and dinner at the Sci-Fi and have had good meals and good service. I am sure that they would let you order off of the lunch menu even at dinner, the reason I said that is because my cousin ask to order a lunch item at dinner and they allowed her, she even ordered off the kid's menu at lunch once and she is an adult and on our last visit she placed an order for an item that was no longer on the menu and that prepared it for her. Last year I had the shrimp penne pasta and I remember it being good. So based on all the above we really like the Sci-Fi and will be dining there again in December.

I really hope that some of you give it a chance and see if you like it. Enjoy where ever you choose to dine!:sunny:
