A while back, Denise posted a link to an article about a new DVD being released.

The DVD is of the T.A.M.I. (Teenage Music Awards International) Show recorded in early 1964 at the Santa Monica Auditorium.

The movie was a theatrical release in 1964 but has not been seen in it's entirety since then, unless you could find a grainy bootleg copy somewhere.

This concert movie is legendary, but most people have only read about it or have seen small clips from it.

The DVD contains clips of the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, James Brown, Jan and Dean, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Lesley Gore and many, many more.

After reading the article, I immediately ordered a copy as Amazon was offering it for $13.99. Cheap, right?

I have since received and email letting me know the price dropped to $11.99 and that Amazon had credit my account for the $2.00. I think that's a classy move.

Here is the link to the DVD on Amazon...if interested.

http://www.amazon.com/T-M-I-Show-Co...ef=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1269531730&sr=8-1

I have only browsed quickly through the DVD but cant wait to sit and watch every second.

If you like 60's music.....this an amazing opportunity to see something that hasnt been seen in 45 years.

Just thought you'd want to know.

By the way...thanks Denise!!!!!!!!

I will probably be the first on my block to get it. Read a rave review in a local paper. As I recall, this is the show where the Stones had to follow James Brown on stage. Thanks for the link, Kevin.

That brings back memories. Ok. I wasn't born yet, but let me finish.

My parents had a Jan & Dean album that included their performance from that show. My brother & I would lip-sync to it all the time. We would use the coffee table as our stage. We were pretty good...if I do say so myself.

One and the same....

The Stones didnt want to go on after James Brown.

There is a lot of legend around this show.

Brian Wilson insisted that the scenes of the Beach Boys be removed from the film. Just after that, he had a nervous breakdown.

The Beach Boys footage is included in the DVD.

So far, it's pretty freaking awesome.

I had heard about this but I have never seen any of it. Thanks for the link Kevin! So..ordering this as a birthday (tomorrow) present to myself!

Thanks Kevin - I am always looking for unique gifts for John.

I will add this to his birthday list.

When I saw the thread title I thought for sure Disney had finally put Song of the South out on DVD! :rotfl:

This looks VERY cool though, I ordered one for my Aunt's birthday! Thanks!

Hmmmmm.....

It must be a scam!:scared1:

DVD's were not in existence 45 years ago! :rotfl2::rotfl:

Sounds great. I ordered the DVD.

So why did Wilson not want the Beach Boys in the movie?

Why did you have to mention the Beach Boys? I saw them in concert in the mid 80s. I was "younger" then. That was almost 25 years ago. Lordy but that was a long time ago! :) But it seems like yesterday....

The concert was good but the keyboardist was bored. He glanced down at his watch and many people noticed. The review in the paper even mentioned it.

Later,
Dan

So why did Wilson not want the Beach Boys in the movie?

Brian Wilson fascinates me.

He is the one person that intimidated the Beatles.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney credit him with forcing them to create Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearst Club Band.

They thought his album Pet Sounds was absolute genius and were nervous about competing.

I also find it amazing that he taught himself to do everything. He has no musical training.

Brian was on the verge of a nervous breakdown and was not thinking with a clear head. He found out that the man who filmed this particular concert film used a very special technique and camera. He had also used this technology to film Richard Burton's Hamlet on Broadway. Burton was not happy that people would be able to see his performance without paying to come to the theater and demanded that each and every print of his performance be destroyed and he was successful. None exist

Brian Wilson decided he wanted to do the same thing...and was successful. Luckily, a few of the unedited prints remained and they were able to release the full version.

Brian Wilson performed one more time two months after this concert was filmed and then disappeared from public life and performing for 19 years.

Kevin,

You sure do know your Beatles/Beach Boys history. On which side do you fall? Pet Sounds or SGT. Pepper?

Pet Sounds for me.

I'm a fan of both, but Brain Wilson really piques my interest.

I find it amazing that anyone can teach themselves to do what he has done.

And alot of that information came from the liner notes of the DVD. I wish I could take credit for already having that knowledge...but I cant.

Kevin,
Thanks for the tip! I just ordered it. I may have to wait a while though. Delivery is quoted at April 12 or later. :(

What would we do without Amazon and its Kindle! :thumbsup2

Kevin,

Thanks for the info. I was never a FAN of the Beach Boys. I know the songs and liked them but never really connected with the music. Now if you want to talk about the Who.... :lmao:

I saw a documentary years ago on the Beach Boys which piqued my interest in Wilson. I think he does deserve the tag of being a genius. Can't wait for he DVD to arrive.

Thanks,
Dan

Wow.

The DVD showed up yesterday and I watched it last night. I really needed some sleep but I had to watch the DVD. :)

Impressive. The DVD really is a piece of history. My kids got a kick out the dancers, the music and the clothes. The thought the dancing looked stupid. :rotfl: Which is what the adults of the day said. :lmao:

The only music I really did not like was the Barbarians. Some of the other groups where so so but I do remember some of their songs.

The liner notes was worth the price of the DVD. To think that Toni Basil from the Hey Mickey song helped with the dancing is a hoot. Glen Campbell was session guitarist in the band. When Chuck Berry was playing and you heard more than just guitar I was wondering if the music had been prerecorded which had not been done. It was all live. Later scenes you could see the band to the right of the stage.

The thing that really stood out was how GOOD the groups were. In this day of lip synching to see the band actually PLAY music and do it as part of a tightly controlled show was amazing. These people had talent and skill. Very impressive.

I have never really liked James Brown's music. But his performance of Please Please Please was awesome. The energy he and his band put into the set and that song was unreal. He and his back up singers were in great physical shape. And this was true for some of the other performers as well.

The only bad thing about the DVD was the stupid screaming teenage girls. Never understood the screaming teenage girl thing. Even my daughter wanted them to shut up and she wanted to know why they kept screaming. :rotfl:

The DVD is a steel at $12-13. The Dick Cavett DVD were he interviews the music groups of the day. The snippet interview with Mick Jagger who looks to be in his 20's saying he could see playing music into his 60's even if he was having to use a cane on stage was a hoot.

Later,
Dan

Sorry, Kevin. I don't know many of those people that well. I must be too young....-running- rofl ;)
