I'll be driving from Louisiana, traveling east along I-10, then taking exit 296A to I-17 South. This is the first time I'll be driving myself; I seem to recall that there is supposedly a route that avoids the tolls and cuts an hour off the drive. Anyone know that route?

We drive from Louisiana all the time. We routinely take I-75 (not I-17) South at Exit 296. I do not know of any route that would save time and tolls. We usually take the Florida Turnpike (toll road) to I-4, the west to Disney World. There is an alternate route further west. I believe it is Florida 27 to U. S. 192, but I don't think it saves much time. There is also a toll off of the Turnpike before you get to I-4 (I believe it's called the Western Expressway), which brings to the west side of Disney World, but we have never taken it.

Have fun however you get there!

1. The route that avoids the tolls. Get onto 27 south and turn left onto 192 east. Left at Sherberth/Entry Point just after Shoney's restaurant. At next light (about 2 miles) you are near Animal Kingdom, turn right onto Osceola Pkwy. (If you missed Sherberth, you will soon see big signs for Disney World.)

2. The route that cuts "an hour" off your drive. From I-75 get onto Florida's Turnpike east, then get off onto Route 429 (Western Beltway) south (signed Tampa). Then get off at Hartzog Road and head east, becomes Western Way. You'll see Disney's welcoming arches, slow down to obey speed limit signs, you'll arrive at Buena Vista Drive near Blizzard Beach.

If you take Florida's Turnpike from it's inception at I-75 near Wildwood all the way to I-4, the toll one way is just $3.00. While I don't know your financial situation, you would not save a heck of a lot of money taking back roads to avoid it and it's clearly the fastest way. Getting off at the US27 exit reduces your toll to $1.25 one way but there a LOTS of traffic lights along US27 and US192. Best advice: Stay on the Turnpike.
