I just found out that I am pregnant and I have seen several places that one is to avoid lunch meats like turkey, ham, etc while pregnant due to fears of listeria. Is this just meat you get in the deli or also prepackaged luncheon meat? I don't want hot meat on my sandwiches, but I also don't want PB&J my whole pregnancy either. Any advice on this would be great. Thanks!

My doctor said this one was not that big of a deal. But he did say if it made me nervous, to stay away from delis because meat sits out for a while and can acquire the bacteria. I never much worried about it. The first half of my pg I didn't want meat anyway. :)

My pre-natal classes teacher really pushed not eating processed lunch meat because of the nitrates used in it. My doctor said, just use common sense and don't eat meat that's been left out.

I ate black forest ham sandwiches during both pregnancies becuase they tasted delicious:thumbsup2

If you are truly worried, just heat the lunchmeat and you will be fine.

All three pregnancies--I didn't bother.

I tried to avoid it, but didn't do a very good job.

Then I went to the childbirth class at the hospital and what did they put out for lunch?

A platter of lunch meat! :rotfl:

This warning came out between my second and third. I did heed it even though my first two were just fine. I usually just warmed it in the microwave for a bit. My little guy was born late at night so they could only get cold things for me to eat. I had a big cold turkey sandwich that tasted delicious!!

I microwaved it as well to make sure that all the bacteria was killed. I was very paranoid about everything like that while pregnant though.

I ate lunch meat all the time with all 3 of mine. My favorites were ham and turkey, sometimes both on the same sub or sandwich.
