Avoid Winn Dixie by Giordano's on 192

Well I thought...how bad can it really be price wise? Try horrific. Up to the point that if we didn't have our exhausted kids with us we would have left a cart full of groceries. Most items are 50% if not up to 100% marked-up from prices we are used to in WI.

Two separate people warned us to just go to Publix and not go across the street. We should have listened.

Hopefully someone will learn from this.

I've found the Publix I've gone to pretty pricey too. I also had problems with the prices not ringing up correctly. My $18 birthday cake rang up as $56 and the cashier didn't even flinch! I told her it was the wrong price and she just stared at me blankly. I had to practically twist her arm to call the bakery. Luckily I had a bunch of older folks behind me cheering me on. They were complaining on how high the prices were and how often they were charged the wrong amount for items.

Maybe grocery prices are higher in NY where I live, but we have a WINN DIXIE card and have shopped there for the last 8 trips. I find the prices a bit higher, but not outrageous !! I have gone to the super WalMart down the road, but I hate shopping there - too crowded !!

Maybe I should consider myself lucky in WI.

12 pack of soda in WI $2.50 - $3.00...Winn Dixie $4.50

Bag of Lays Chips in WI $2.00...Winn Dixie $4.29

12 Pack of Beer in WI $8.00...Winn Dixie $13.39

Liter of Bacardi Rum in WI $16.00...Liquor Store across from WD $26.00

Total sticker shock tonight...oh well an expected $80-$100 trip was $170.

Winn Dixie and Publix can be expensive if you buy name-brand stuff not on sale. They both offer bogo sales and other deals, but that isn't going to help a tourist rolling in cold off the street.

Still, you'd pay a lot more for those chips in a hotel shop or restaurant.

Have fun!

The prices you quote sound like sale prices. You'll always pay more if you can't shop the sales. Here, you seldom find 12 packs of soda less than $3 on sale. Regular prices are around $5.29. Lays Chips are often BOGOF, which is $2.15, but the regular price on the bag is definitely $4.29.

I don't buy beer or liquor, but I think you'll find the best liquor prices at the Walgreens associated stores in Orlando or at Sams Club if you're a member.

I usually shop at Publix now that I dropped my Sams membership, but we went to that Winn Dixie last year when we stayed at the Wilderness Lodge. I didn't find their prices unusual for non-sale prices.

I stopped in at this Winn Dixie on my trip last August. Generally I buy only a few basic items, like some bottled water, fruit, etc., so I don't "feel" the inflated prices as much. Winn Dixie lets you apply for their store loyalty card via their website, so that helps. I got my card in the mail before leaving for Florida.

I think the Winn Dixie is a reasonable option for people staying in the Downtown Disney/LBV area. But, I do think it's important to get the loyalty card ahead of time and to focus on the sale items.

The Winn-Dixie near DTD and Lake Buena Vista is NOT the same as the one on 192 near Windsor Palms. I do ok at the Apopka-Vineland WD, especially as I like to also visit the ABC liquor store there, but do not shop at the Winn-Dixie on 192. A long time ago, someone posted it was affiliated with Goodings. I don't know whether or not that's true, but the prices seemed like Goodings.

I usually shop at Publix -- I read the flyer on line, and use their sales. The prices are similar to Stop n Shop here in CT. My sister-in-law finds them cheaper than CA.

Is this the one that has an Asian theme inside? If so, it was HORRIBLE. I went there a couple weeks ago and we were astounded at the prices. I asked DH to go to another store and he said he was too tired to go somewhere else so they had us. Not only were the prices excessively high, they had a limited selection. The largest section in the store was the junk food. DH did talk to a manager and they said that they cater to the folks staying at Disney so they select more items they would buy (like chips and then they have less varieties of fruit and such). And they can charge a bunch and people will pay. All about location - for them, it's great and for us consumers, it sucks.

Which one was this so we can avoid it? Thanks

Those sound like pretty normal Florida prices to me. Part of the problem is that we have pretty high "sin taxes" on alcohol and tobacco products.

But none of those prices look out of line with what we pay in Miami.

Those prices are the norm for those items all the time down here unless you catch them on sale. It is much cheaper when I go up to Illinois than what we pay here, too. Even a 24 pack of coke is usually $6.98 at Walmart. Their 12 packs are over $4 too. One advantage is only some foods are taxed??? LOL

I agree with you on that one. We went to the 192 Winn Dixie a few years ago and never again. It was a nasty little store with very high prices. It would make sense if it's affiliated with Goodings. We don't shop there either.

Is there another Giordano's on 192? I was thinking of the one on 535 when I responded earlier.

They are talking about the FORMER Wynn Dixie on 192 that was renamed a few years back as a "Marketplace". They may be supplied by Wynn Dixie but they don't necessarily honor WD customer cards or sale prices.

The one on 535 near the OTHER Giordano's (they happen to have restaurants near both) is a true Wynn Dixie, recently totally remodeled & updated, and we have found their prices to be in line with other major stores and the sale prices to be very good. We also avoid the 192 store.

This. ^ There is something shady about the 192 one, and it does seem to be overpriced the few times I've stopped in. I'll ALWAYS take Publix over Winn Dixie, but if I had to shop in a WD, it would be the one on 535. It's cleaner than most, and the staff is at least indifferent rather than outright hostile.

I like the Super Target off of 417. The prices are ok, they have decent prepared foods, and the people are really nice. They also have a Pizza Hut, which is convenient for my kids.

I don't drink so I cannot tell you what the prices are for that, but here in SW FL, the prices for what you quoted for chips and soda are sale prices. I have a bag of Ruffles in front of me, and the bag itself states it is $4.29. Do the chip manufactures set different prices for different areas? :confused3
Now I can snag them on sale, but on the same token, they aren't always on sale. Same goes for the soda..

I am looking at an ad for my local Publix right now.. it states 4-12 packs for $12.00 (buy 3 get one free save up to $7.96 on 4) They also have Lay's Chips $4.29 (buy one get one free) as well as various beers going for $13.99 & 14.99 and mind you, I live 3 hours south of Disney...

I will say that I have seen items in my Publix slightly cheaper than Orlando's Publix, both are advertised in their ad's too.. example, once my Publix's Peaches were $1.00 less per pound.. same ad, different price in each ad I ended up with both ad's in my car

I find the groceries in Orlando to be about the same as SC, but way more expensive than anywhere I stay in the Midwest. Usually Publix will be less but not always.

Welcome to Florida. I do some work for some folks that live in Wisconsin, they are shocked when the get the bill each time.
