Avis - Refuel and Insurance

I'll be renting from Avis on my next trip, and was wondering a few things. Do they have an option where you can buy a tank of gas at pick-up, and return the car empty? Anyone know the current rate? I don't plan on getting their insurance, as my insurance company will cover the vehicle. Is the insurance card good enough at the Avis counter?

Thanks! :)

We rented from Avis a couple of weeks ago. They asked us twice about filling the car up when we returned or before. It seemed like it was really expensive for them to fill up. I would suggest you refuel the vehicle before returning to the airport. I want to say something like $7/gallon. I'm not sure. I brought a copy of our insurance statement page, and I don't know if the gal even looked at it. Even though the car we had was okay, be warned that they consider a full-size to be a Malibu. We had a disagreement at the counter, and she informed us that was all they had left. Unless they rented a lot of vehicles after we got ours at 8:00 p.m. on a Sunday night, they had tons of vehicles on the lot. We rarely used the car, but I like to know if I pay for a full size, I get something with a little more leg room for DH and DS who is well over 6 ft. We didn't have any problem with our internet coupon or the price on the confirmation. Check-in was a breeze. They met us in the lot, gave us a printout, and off we went.

Thanks for the reply. Where did you refuel on the way to the airport? We have a luxury reserved, so it should be a Cadillac DeVille. We'll be picking up in the morning, too (the advantage to early flights).

Thanks again.

There are gas stations very close to the airport, ( we refueled there ) but make sure you keep your receipt when you fill up the tank, they will ask for that otherwise they will charge you. I know they asked me for a receipt just to look at it.
It's cheaper for you to re-fuel before returning it than for them to do it for you, as far as insurance goes all you need is your insurance card, nothing else.

I agree with Mskanga. There are plenty of gas stations. Since we had been to the Florida Mall area, we ended up going on the Bee Line Expressway to the airport. If coming directly from Disney, there are places there to get gas, too.

Thanks for the replies.

Does Avis always ask to see the gas receipt?

Has anyone seen their lot lately? (what kind of cars were sitting there?)

Thanks again!

Avis did not ask us for a gas receipt. Check-in was a breeze. No waiting whatsoever. By the time we got our luggage out of the trunk, we had our printout from the Avis person. They have GM products. We had a full size reserved and got a Malibu.:(

Almost all the rental companies let you buy a full tankful of gas up front and return the car unfilled, but this choice is somewhat more expensive than not buying the tankful and being sure to fill the tank just before returning the car.

You will always leave gas behind in the car and there is no refund for gas you bought up front, this makes the real cost per gallon much higher than what gas stations charge.

Without buying the tankful up front, fill up the night before to reduce hassles on return-home day. If you don't have time to top off, the rental company gas charge won't be that big, but check the rental rules in your contract to be sure.

Thanks for the replys. I think as long as it is a decent price for gas, I'll just get the tank (much easier that way). We always return the car at near empty anyways.

Thanks again! :)
