AVIS at MCO

We just got AVIS at MCO from Priceline. Is this in the terminal for both pick up and return? Does anyone know if you use Priceline can you add the GPS or toll option and how much it is? TIA!

All of the major rental companies, including AVIS are on site at MCO and have both pick-up and return (just follow the signs).

You can add GPS option at the rental counter for an additional fee (honestly, you could probably buy a GPS cheaper then what they rent a week for). As for the toll option, I'm not familar with how AVIS works, but Hertz uses PlatePass for their vehicles and all vehicles can use the system (regardless of rental method and there is nothing to sign/add to use it). You are billed the toll amount plus a daily fee up to a maximum.

Whenever we rented from Avis at MCO and then took the Beachline on their toll road we just paid the fee in cash, so there wasn't any extra charges from Avis. I don't remember if they mentioned having a system like Hertz does because the last time we rented with them was in December 2009.

Here's what the Avis website says:

"State of Florida
In the state of Florida the renter has the option of using Sun-Pass Only, ePass Only, and Leeway high-speed lanes. When a renter utilizes these high-speed toll lanes, the toll system identifies the car and charges the standard non-discounted fee for toll roads as published by the toll authority plus the convenience fee of $2.50 per day and $10.00 per week based on the length of the car rental. The fee will be posted to the credit card you used on your rental. Effective February 19th, the Florida Turnpike no longer accepts cash payments. By driving on this road you opt-in to use of Avis e-Toll."

The FAQs make it clear that it is "$2.50 per day OR $10.00 per week based on the length of the car rental" A weekly rental would cost $10 plus the cost of the tolls. Sound pretty expensive unless you are driving on toll highways every day during your trip. On the other hand, if you are at an unmanned exit without any change, this beats the alternative of crashing through the gate! -- Suzanne

$10.00 is a deal for convenience, no stopping at the plaza's, waiting in line, etc.

So if I am only driving the car on the toll road from the airport to Disney for a week stay and back to the airport I would pay the $10.00 for the convenience and then another 5.00 I think for the actual toll (2.50 each way) correct?

I wouldn't do it. It probably only saves you a couple minutes each way. I always pay cash and have never seen a long line at the tolls.

We used Avis through Priceline last week...not a great experience. First, be prepared to provide your personal auto insurance information if declining their insurance (even though nothing in the documentation suggests you'll need this). Also, Avis "kindly upgraded" our standard vehicle to a premium vehicle because there weren't any standard size available. We got to the assigned spot in the garage and found this big, old, dirty Monte Carlo. Off to the Avis booth in the garage to complain and then a standard size vehicle was magically available. Normally we're heading out of MCO in our rental car within 30 minutes of landing...Alamo/National/Budget...we've used them all, we've used Priceline before too with much better results. Just know what you need, what you rented and what not to settle for and you'll be fine.

As for the insurance, the high pressure sales tactics are unfortunate and really shouldn't occur. If you ever have problems all you need to do is remind them that their contract terms and conditions do not require you to purchase insurance to rent a car. The only agencies that I know that require proof of insurance or purchase of insurance are some of the more localized, smaller rentals (Payless I think or similar).

I've seen some decent lines, but everyone has their own perceived value of a service/feature.

I used it once on a business trip to Houston, it was worth it because we were going through a toll at least twice a day from the hotel to the office. But to use it just to and from the airport, it doesn't seem worth it.

When I did this in December, Alamo only charged me for the days that I used the tolls. So even though I had the car for the week, I only paid for two days of toll-pass usage (plus the actual tolls).

I got one of those on a business trip in Detroit. My coworker called it the "pimp mobile". I'm so happy my company switched to National and I can pick my car.

I was there last week and I'm glad I didn't get the sun pass. The only tolls I hit was from the airport to Kissimmee and back to the airport. $2.00 each way. The sun pass would have cost me $5.00 per each day of the rental.

Haha! Its funny how people have such different tastes in cars. Normally I'm not a big fan of the Grand Marquis but on vacation, we love it. We had one last trip and with a 6 foot tall husband and 2 little boys in car seats & a huge set of golf clubs, we wanted a big car. We got one! Thought it was great. (DH is a deputy sheriff so he's used to driving those big cars around anyway.)

Reserved a premium this upcoming trip with Budget hoping to get something like a Grand Marquis again.

And its been a while since we've used Avis. I'm thinking 2007? But we had a good experience (had a Hyundai Sonata that trip). I always check their rates too but normally they are quite a bit higher than Budget or Dollar. I wouldn't hesitate to use them if I found a great rate.
