Average RT Hawaii airfare from CA during peak season?

Last time I flew to Hawaii it was in July 2011. At the time it was $1600 RT nonstop from LAX to OGG and that included a rental car. I've been checking airfare ever since that trip. It seems like it's gone way up. When's the best time (how far out in booking) to get the best rate from LAX to HNL for a mid summer vacation? Which airlines?
