Just wondered if the 'Avengers' characters would be at Universal next year, as the film has been doing very well at the box office. Anyone heard anything?

Probably not but who knows. I think the characters are included in the Marvel contract as part of a "family" but not sure if Universal would fool with those characters. But...you never know.

No way since Disney owns the rights and made the movie. Avengers merch is a plenty at Disney right now. I am sure you saw pics of the Avengers monorail that is currently running as well.

Cap America shows up at Universal with X-Men and Spiderman currently. I think that is the only member you will see.

As I understand it, Universal's contract with Marvel (which pre-dates Disney's acquisition) allows Universal to continue to use Marvel characters in attractions, restaurants, and M&Gs at least. These characters include any and all within the "Avengers" group.

As for the Avengerrail, you'll note that it does not run on the Epcot loop like the Tronorail did. This is believed to be because Disney cannot contractually operate an Avenger's attraction (which one could define the monorail as) inside any of their theme parks. The Epcot loop runs within Epcot, while the Express and Resort loops around Seven Seas Lagoon do not pass within Magic Kingdom.

My understanding also is that merch is not part of this deal, and why you see Marvel merch at Disney.

CAPTAIN AMERICA

We saw Avengers merch at US last weekend. Granted, most of it WAS Captain America, but not all, so apparently they can carry merch. I would agree that it is unlikely Universal will feel the need to add Marvel Avengers characters for M&G, etc beyond the ones already there, though.

Wow. Good info to know. I know Cap has always been part of the show when the characters show up, I have not seen any of the others. I wonder if IOA could use the characters, but NOT as they appeared in the movie (being that was a Disney production).

Good question. :confused3 The only thing I feel safe in asserting is that UO would be able to do M&Gs with them long before WDW could.

They they all have little mouse ears? :rotfl:

Yeah...that's what I meant by "families".

My understanding of the contract is that any character that they are currently using in any form, they may continue to use.

We noticed the Avenger monorail was used circling the Magic Kingdom instead of the EPCOT line like Tron had been. One of the cast members running the monorail gate told us that the Avenger one could not be used where outside traffic could see it. There's a long length of the EPCOT rail that can be seen from the roadways outside and that's apparently not allowed in whatever contract agreement they have for it. It was not on any of the tracks when we were over there last week. We used to see Tron everytime.
It's very odd to now see Marvel merchandise now in the Disney Store.

As people said, Captain America is a staple of the park and his new uniform (more matching the one in the Captain America movie) is really sharp. They definitely own rights to Hulk and Iron Man as well, but logistically speaking you're probably not going to see them as walk around characters anytime soon.

I'm racking my brain and I can't think if I've seen Thor anywhere in IOA. He'd be a great and easy to do walk around character, but outside of a Donald Blake reverence on a window (his alter ego), I'm not sure if there's any actual "Thor" references. If there is, and just the fact they have the name Donald Blake, leads me to believe he's included in their master license.

It's doubtful IOA has the rights to use Black Widow or Hawkeye.

Different reasons cited, same idea. There is apparently some contractual limitation as to where it can run, and demonstrates that Universal still has some say over Marvel product. ;)

I remember someone posting part of the contract and it stating that USF could continue to use the current Marvel characters and any families that those characters belong to. In other words, the X-Men could be used due to Storm, Rogue and Wolverine and the Avengers could also thank to Captain America.

I would personally love to see Thor and Iron Man.

Something else to keep in mind is that the look/feel of the Marvel area at IOA is based upon the Comics. Considering most of the current Marvel films are based on a much more realistic world than the traditional stylized Comic world there could be a bit more of a clash between anything placed in IOA based off the movie appearances and the surrounding area.... even if the contract would allow it.
