'Avatar,' 'Coco' attractions are coming to Disneyland — and other big news from D23

They didn't exactly get rid of MuppetVision for Philharmagic. They closed it and let it sit for years, only using it for movie previews and, briefly, the Frozen sing-along. Eventually they brought in Philharmagic as a permanent show, which was better than nothing being in there at all. That said, I prefer Muppets too.
Which is exactly why I don't want Muppets removed from DHS. I'm so sad that younger generations (heck probably even in my generation - born late 80s) don't know the Muppets. I used to watch the old Muppet Show and loved all their movies. A Muppet Christmas Carol is a must watch in my family every year.

Not sure if there's another thread for it or not. But I just saw the Mice Chat update that seems pretty confident in Avatar stuff going into the area where Monsters Inc is as well as where the bus currently drops off. They even overlaid it on a map. Thoughts?

Also showed where Coco will likely go (next to Midway Mania.)

I hope they're right! I wouldn't mind losing those two areas. Please let us keep the whole Highway 49 area of the park!

Yeah...if Avatar (which I'm not really a fan of, in general) definitely ends up in the Hollywood section, maybe I will actually get excited about it a little!

They have been adamant about the Hollywood location for months, even before the D23 announcement.

I was excited to see the overlay of where Coco is likely to go behind Pixar Pier kind of across from Mickey's wheel. This would be a great addition to that area of the park, without having to remove any existing attractions. Apparently the parade storage area would be impacted so curious where they'll find room for parade floats.

While in theory I like the idea of another ride back in this area, I am already frustrated by that area's current inability to deal with the quantities of people it draws. If they are going to continue to infill the area with rides, then they need to add a lot of additional restroom capacity and more shade and rest areas.

I just popped over to MC and didn't see an MC Update referring to DLR that had a map on it. If you can't post the link, can you give the title of the update?

I checked the forum too and didn't see anything there either.

So my guesses in post #30 weren't completely off base. :woohoo:

The dirt that was moved must have been in the vicinity of the new parking structure.

At D23, they announced attractions and lands opening in 2025-2027. If they have to re-route the monorail and build a new parking structure, it is going to take several years. They announced Avatar last year so it wasn't news. Why did they feature it at D23? Maybe they didn't have anything else (even something as simple as nighttime entertainment) to announce for the CA parks. :confused3

The mice chat article, for anyone else looking for it, is: https://www.micechat.com/395094-disneyland-update-attractions-where-dare-to-scare-bbq-bear/

What I'm still unclear on: "A huge show building can fit in the tram space. A new parking garage on the East side of Disneyland and bridge will funnel guests through a corridor roughly under the inbound Monorail beam behind the Avatar show building"

So is the East entrance to the esplanade going to get very narrow and potentially crowded for pedestrians? Will the trams and buses go to the new parking structure instead?

Yes, that is what I had heard. It will be a transportation hub with rideshare, security, etc.
Yes, everything will move to the eastside parking structure similar to Mickey and Friends/Pixar Pals. Buses, security, pedestrian bridge, etc. The entrance area to the Esplanade from Harbor/eastside parking will be very narrow, but all they will need is a walkway - no more bus loops or security.

There are many unanswered questions. How long of a walk will it be from the parking area? Will they have a tram or shuttle of any kind? How will people staying on Harbor access the Esplanade?

Only time will tell with much of this.

Wouldn't the just walk like they currently do, just through a narrower walkway?
Hopefully, but it's unknown. Disney tried to do this exact project about 7-8 years ago and Anaheim did not allow it. Access from Harbor businesses was being restricted and people were going to have to walk east (away from the Esplanade) to the parking structure to go through security and walk across Harbor.

Apparently Disney has made changes to improve guest access from Harbor, but no one will really know until they build it. Will there be a new crosswalk near the bridge? Will there be stairs up the bridge near Tropicana and a new security checkpoint? As you mentioned, will there be some sort of security setup still in the new narrow area after crossing a crosswalk? If so, how many security tents can they have with such a small area and what will the wait be?

It will be interesting to see how it unfolds. I actually think it's a good idea, but fascinated by the details and logistics.

I vaguely remember seeing something about security being moved to the other side of Harbor. But I can't remember where I saw it or if that was just a part of the old plan that got cancelled.

With the way Micechat has it on their page, I'm not sure where security could even go if it stayed west of Harbor. The area covered with the new Avatar stuff is often full of people lining up to get in. Not sure where they will go now.

(I have to admit, this makes me happy we purchased DVC last year instead of continuing to stay on Harbor like we used to.)

True, but remember a lot that wait is currently from people coming in on buses from ART and Toy Story. All of that will be moved to the new parking area. Harbor would actually be just people staying on Harbor/Katella. Toy Story does do security before about 11:00, but the rest of the day they are using the same security area.
