Availability at non DVC Resorts

This one may have been posted before but I couldn't find it. If there is any availability at a non DVC resort (GF, Poly etc), will you be able to book it or is there only a specific number of rooms available for DVC points? In other words if I call central reservations and they say there is availability, will I also be able to book through DVC or is it possible those rooms are for cash ressies only?

I have never had trouble booking a WDW resort room with DVC - stayed at Polyn, Cont, BC, YC generally on the last night. However staying at a DVC resorts really saves on points.

If there's a block on the other DVC by percent occupancy, I am unaware of it. I would assume that if only one room were available, the DVC member would get it. Remember that many hotels block certain rooms for conventions and the like and these would not be available unless the rooms were released.

I know staying at DVC is the best use of points but I am in the middle of buying a resale that has some points in "Reservation Status" so I can only use them at non DVC resorts. I am not scheduled to close until the latter part of August and was trying to plan ahead. Can I make a reservation through the cash option and then convert to points at a non DVC resort (GF, Poly, Cont. etc) after I close, this would help guarantee room availability?

You cannot just change the payment type of a reservation by getting cash ressies then changing to points. That's true at any of the point options including DVC resorts. Making cash ressies is a way of guarantee having a room not of being able to use your points. The exception would be the items where you can combine points and cash like the cruise.
