Automatic or Manual Transmission in your Automobile?

I actually prefer a standard, but both of our vehicles are automatic transmissions.

We have 2 vehicles and both are stick. I love it! Honestly, it would probably take me a few minutes to figure out an Automatic if I had to drive one. Learned on a stick, took driver's test in a stick, so from now on I'm sticking with a stick!

drive auto, but want standard. I learned on a standard, and my first car was a standard. I am hopefully getting another car at the end of the summer, which will definitely be a manual. :drive:

I PREFER a manual but my car didn't come in a manual so I had to get an automatic for the first time in my life.

DH has a manual still.

After having 3 automatic transmission cars, I finally got back to a stick shift. I love it but it is getting harder and harder to find.

I wanted my kids to learn to drive stick. DS 19 took right to it. DD 21 isn't interested. I really want her to know how to drive it though. It is a good skill to have.

I'm getting to be an old broad and I have a sore knee
but nobody better try to take my stick shift from me. ;)

I dont really prefer one over the other. I learned to drive on a manual but now I drive an automatic. Driving the automatic allows me to be more lazy and multi task while driving.

I have an automatic, but I like to drive a stick.

Both of our vehicles are stick shifts -- Saturn ION and Toyota Truck. With gas prices what they are today, I couldn't be happier.

I drive a manual now and all my previous cars have been as well. I think you have so much more control of the car, especially in winter driving conditions. I'm due for a new car this summer, so who knows? Is the gas mileage really signifigantly better?

It all depends on how you drive it.

I prefer a manual but my current car is an automatic. When I bought it, DD was just turning 16. I wanted her to learn to drive first on an automatic and then once she was doing well, we'd teach her to drive a manual in DH's car.

Actually, now that I think of it, I need to teach her to drive a stick this summer. :thumbsup2

DH and I both have manual transmission in our cars.

I learned to drive in both automatic and stick shift. I prefer the stick shift 'cause I love the control! :drive:

I was wondering if you pass your test in the US in an car with automatic transmission can you still drive a car with manual transmission?

In the UK if you take your test in an automatic, your licence will only allow you to drive automatic transmission cars.

I drive stick btw:goodvibes, I test drove an automatic last year, I like the idea if not having to change gear but I will stick with my manual for the time being.

Automatic. I don't drive much (less than 100 miles/week), and most of what I do drive is on suburban/city streets, where manual is a PITA b/c of the stop-and-go traffic. My husbnand has a manual transmission, b ut will probably get an automatic when we replace his car in a year or two b/c the stick drives him crazy in traffic.

I prefer manual, though they are harder to find in some type of vehicles. My DH has an automatic and is learning to drive my manual. I just like the control I get over the car that I lose in an automatic. I think my husband is beginning to understand why I like them so much even though I drive pretty much only around town in stop and go traffic.

Automatic.

Manual is too much trouble. I've driven manual and I just don't see the thrill about the 'control' over the car. Big whoop. And having had to come to a stop on an icy hill with a line of cars behind me while driving a stick... That was 31 years ago and I've never driven a stick again.

And my dh was absolutely unable to learn to drive a manual. Could not do it.

I've always had automatics, but have always wanted a standard. I have a standard now and love it! It took some time to drive the car smoothly, but it is coming. I still make the occasional screw-up, but I am trying to get smoother all the time. I also think having the standard will help me with my motorcycle.

Yes, but in general our drivers license tests here are a joke anyway.

My first 2 cars were manual but I am too lazy now so I'll still with automatics. :goodvibes
