I'm sure this answer is here somewhere but I dont have time to look at the moment.

What kinds of pens do you use. They say to bring a fat pen. I am giving the kids the scrapbooks to get signed in and will try to fit photos etc around them. I havent been able to find any fat pens that say they are acid free. As a matter of fact the ones I have found seem to be mostly if anything thinner than the normal pen. I have looked at dollar store and nothing says acid free. As well as I dont see much in the way of fat other than markers and pencils. I asked at Michaels and they dont have anything. Is it okay to use a regular ball point pen? What about sharpies? At walmart they told me when they have signings they use sharpies.

I got an awesome fat Disney pen at Walmart in Orlando for $1.99 and it had a string to go around your neck. The characters had no problems gripping them. They made a nice souveineer.

We bought an oversized pen in the park last year, worked great. Sharpies are always recommended too.

How fat is fat??? Are we talking 1" around 1/2", 3"??

The one we got is not quite as big around as a cigar. You can just barely see it in the picture below - Pluto is using it to sign DD's autograph book. Length is important too - as you can see, the pen is long enough that top of the pen (it has a Mickey top) sticks out above the character's hand (paw?).

We too bought Sharpie's and used them. I found them to be the perfect size. My only complaint is that while standing in line with pen top off and ready to go......all of my kids ruined most of their clothing with the permanent marker. All of their clothes has marker zig zags on them right along side where they were holding their pens by their sides. Oh well, not a big deal, just a comment. My oldest happened to lose her Sharpie mid trip and we bought the standard autograph pen and I have to say, I liked it better. No top to lose and no staining! :sunny:

Just a quick thing about the pens from inside the park. . . They run out of the ink faster then most pens that you get. I have bought pens and tried them out but then when I get up there they always run out of ink.. It might be the heat issue but I am not sure. Also I am not sure if it is the same in DW and this happened in DL

We used supersharpies - they are longer, fatter versions of sharpies. The characters loved them - Timon tried to steal it - Tigger hugged it.

Not sure about Acid Free but they now make retractable sharpies... no caps to loose, They can stay in until given to the characters and come in lots of fun colors!!!

Enjoy

I cant find the retractible sharpies that are other than black. Any tips on where to keep looking?

Will the sharpies run through the Disney autograph books? I am using index cards but the rest of my group is using the regular Disney blue ones

I found out on our last trip that the stores and carts will replace the pens if they run out of ink. DD's pen ran out when she was getting an autograph(DS had one too) and the CM told me just to take it into any Disney store or cart and they will replace it. I did and it was no problem!

Edit to add: Pens bought at disney stores

I too scrapbook and I got some black pens from Creative Memories (MAJOR scrapbook company- sure you've heard of them!). I haven't used them yet (our trip is coming up in a few days!), but my SIL did and she said they worked great! She said she got 3 in case one ran out (she also lost one, so it was a good thing!). Hopes this helps and have a great trip!

Staples or Office Max has 4 and 12 Packs with all dfferent colors... Not sure about them running thourgh but they don't on regular paper so i am assuming this would not be an issue

I got a 4 pack of the retractable sharpies at Walmart. Magenta, lime green, orange and aqua. Very cool colors!

We found these at Target as well- we had more compliments on our pens when we were there. They are easy to use and you dont have to worry about losing a cap.

I emailed the Sanford company (who makes Sharpies) about acid-free products for autographs and scrapbooking. Sharpies are not acid-free.

But...they make "poster paint" markers in several tip sizes (extra fine through extra bold) that are acid-free, archival quality pens. They come in a bunch of colors, too ... bonus!

Try a scrapbooking store or Hobby Lobby for archival safe pens. If you have neither nearby, there are TONS of scrapbooking stores on-line.

I got a black spiral bound gel pen album, and some fat tip gel markers (yellow, white and purple). These worked great! The colors showed up really nicely and it looked really cool. All the characters did fine with them.

The characters all had plain old Bic pens in case someone didn't have a pen, btw. So they can use any type.
