auto train

We're booked for our third round trip this Nov. It's just DH and I since our boys are 21 and 24 and aren't going with us. We've done coach (1st rt) and a roomette (2nd rt) and will never do a roomette again. This trip we're going Coach again. We actually slept better in Coach and didn't feel so confined at night. A bedroom would be nice, but expensive. We're going round trip, two adults, one SUV for $689. We've enjoyed our trips and while we could fly for free (ff miles), we'd still need transportation. We're going on a one week cruise and then 6 days at WDW. Both of our trips, we've arrived within 1-2 hours of schedule at the worst. We only live 45 minutes from Lorton, so it's very convenient. The Auto Train is very popular and we have met many snowbirds who are on their 10-15 th trip. They see it as part of the adventure and they travel with friends. They put the snowbirds in the same cars and they have families in their own cars and we have been with families with older children, couples and singles. Our car is probably the quietest. The snowbirds know how to party.

Just a note that I personally don't recommend the comfort inn. The hotel is often used when soldiers are deployed. I arrived one night and the room I had been guaranteed had been given away and they wanted me to drive to a different hotel ( note this was 11pm at night!)

There is a Marriott in Springfield which is just as close and very accomodating.

There are several places to stay up and down I-95 near Lorton. If you check the auto train thread that is linked in popular transportation link sticky on the transportation page, you will find several posts on the subject. I posted some info there over the last couple of years ago including where to look for hotels. As I said above, we live 45 minutes from Lorton, and dont' even have to get onto I-95 because of the route we use. We now eat well before we get to Lorton because there really isn't much there.
