Auto train last minute fares

I've been following the auto train one way rates from Sanford to Lorton May 10th. Wasn't sure it would work for me, but as I've considered it, fares have gone up and rooms are sold out. Drat!

I can manage with a coach seat over night (it's just me). I'm not willing to pay the current fare, but if it should drop, I would book. Has anyone else tried to book "last minute" and seen rates decrease?

Usually on AMTRAK, the earlier you book, the cheaper the seat. You might find this of interest:
