Hi There!
Me, DBF and our car 'Roxy' :car: are thinking of taking the Auto Train in May to and from WDW! Super excited to save 1800 miles on our car (our car is a 2011! 1800 miles seems like a LOT!) I was wondering - does anyone have experience taking the train? How is the motion? The Bathrooms? Any tips would be awesome as well :D

I found this thread and read for quite sometime. My son's family took the auto train down 2 years ago and we are all planing another trip but coming back up in Oct. If we go again next year and it is not a charter, we may be traveling in May from Lorton down.

I think it will be nice to not have to make the long trek back after being there a week.

I think there is another thread with a trip report, I read that one for pages too. I think they were started aroun 2003, but this link had a lot of information transfered into, Thank you to the OP of it. :surfweb:

I have done the auto train a few times with my sister who goes to school outside Orlando and it is what it is. Not at all glamorous like some old movies. The roomettes are glorified closests. The coach seats are about the size of first class airline seats which have foot rests that come up. It is quite convenient, you leave Lorton at 4 o'clock in the afternoon and arrive in Sanford the morning at approx 9 am. There really isn't a lot on the train to do so be prepared to pack up books, movies, toys, etc. They serve a dinner meal, not bad but remember it's train food. The breakfast they serve is continental and if you require more than be prepared to stop. The drive from the station to Disney is pretty easy, basically straight down I-4. It's not a bad trip but my husband has sworn up & down he will never do it. He also refuses to drive, but I like road trips.

You can book auto train "coach" or "first class".
Coach is buying seats, and a vehicle
First class is buying seats, vehicle, and booking a room.
With both classes you will get 2 meals; dinner and breakfast. Meals in first class are upgraded and include I think both red and white wine, plus some wine and cheese gathering pre-dinner.
Family traveled last March, coach and enjoyed it very much. Husband and I will be on the auto train late October out of Sanford and are booked into a Superliner Bedroom which is about twice as large as a roomette. I can report back after we get home if you want.
Following is info that I cut and pasted from another board
as well as links to really good auto train info here on the DIS.

We took the auto train last March. Personally, I would not wait for discount codes. When we bought our tickets, the price never went down; but we were traveling during a busy spring break period. Are you traveling during summer vacation? If so, probably not too many discount codes. Also, you may want to talk to Amtrak; the website can be a bit deceiving. The website led me to believe that once I "purchased" the tickets online they were non-refundable, but really they were only non-refundable after the tickets had been picked up at the station, which in our case was not until the day we left. Have you been on auto-train before? There is a difference between reserved coach seats and lower level coach seats. Let me know if you want details; and then also if you "buy a room" which means going first class, but also considerably more expensive. Also we traveled mid-week and the train was only about half full. Pretty much everyone on the train was able to spread out across 2 seats. Also if you have an American Express card and rack up any kind of rewards, they can be redeemed for coupons on Amtrak. Any more questions, let me know. We loved the whole experience and would love to find an excuse to do it again.

The cars are all double decker. Upper level seating is just like what you think of train seating. Two seats on each side of an aisle, and you walk from car to car on the upper level. There can be lots of foot traffic moving around from car to car. On the lower level, the car is split sort of in half. You come down a set of stairs and to the left, or in our case forward part of the car are the bathrooms. I think there were 4 bathrooms; 2 were pretty much like your standard aircraft bathroom, 1 had a changing area in addition to the toilet/sink , and 1 was a full-on lounge kind of thing. The lounge had a room with stools facing a mirror and a sink , and then a separate toilet/sink. I pretty much used this bathroom for the whole trip. There was enough room for me and my 2 teenage girls to get changed, brush teeth, put on make-up etc in the morning. To the right is a "compartment". The compartment has I think around 12 or 16 seats. There is plenty of storage space overhead. There is a door to the compartment. This is where our seats were; and we had the seats at the far rear of the compartment, so we had all the room behind our seats as well. I kind of think of the compartment as a caccoon. Kind of like a dead end street. You can't walk through to anywhere else, so the only people coming and going, are the people that are seated there. It was very quiet; when it came time to sleep, my teenagers spread out across our 4 seats, my husband slept on the floor behind the seats, and I ended up spreading out on the upper level across 2 seats. Strangely, we all got a pretty good night's sleep. Yes, there are power outlets on the wall adjacent to the seats (at least there were on the lower level; don't remember about upstairs.) Food was very good. When you check in to the train, you choose your dinner seating time. I want to say they were like 5:30 and 7:30PM. Complimentary white wine. Cash bar for everything else. The bar/lounge car is open before and after. The bar car has self serve beverage/snack service all night long. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate,WATER (important for me because I don't do caffeine, and I'm always thirsty) bananas, apples; stuff like that. I can't say about soda, because none of us really drink it. A nice sit down breakfast in the morning. Train makes one stop in South Carolina to fuel, somewhere around 1, 2 AM. The only people that got off, and then back on, were Amtrak employees and a woman with a service dog. I woke up and sort of watched out the window because I thought it was fascinating. Everybody else slept through it. I think scheduled arrival time in Sanford is 9AM, but we ended up getting in closer to 8 AM, and we had our van and we were on the road before 9AM. Don't know what kind of vehicle you will have, but check-in time for "oversized", i.e., van or SUV is an hour earlier than for a regular car. I think like 3 hrs before dept as opposed to 2 for a car. Worked out good for us, because we got those seats at the rear of the lower compartment, so we had that room behind us. They let you board about an hour before departure. If we were going again; 1. Book early. I didn't book at the first opportunity because I mistakenly thought the tickets were Non-refundable. Check the fine print though, it may have changed. I could have booked "sleeper" cars or first class for the same price I ended up paying for coach. I found the price will do nothing but go up. And the price goes up for the vehicle as well as the passengers. 2. If I couldn't go first class, I would book lower level. You are on the same level as the bathrooms, less motion, way quieter and peaceful. 3. Check in early, and ask for the seats at the back of the lower level car. 4. Bring my tervis tumbler with lid so I have cold water at my finger tips 5. Bring a sheet or something to lay on the floor so I could spread out. We had our own pillows, and fleece blankets. They do provide pillows and blankets. That's all I can think of for now.

Mileage between Lorton, VA and Sanford, FL is only about 820 miles. So that's what you'd be saving; not 1800. Don't know if that matters in your planning.

Wow! thanks for all the info guys!
:worship: :disrocks:.

This is my first time taking the auto train(and FIRST grown up trip WDW and DBF first time EVER!)
We do have a small car and while I am very happy with 40mpg hwy! though I do miss my Jeep grand Cherokee ). I'm driving from Bangor, Maine to VA. DBF isn't to excited but I love a good road trip.

:teacher: I love my math sometimes! hehe! I was thinking 1800? it's actually 1640 miles we are saving! :) and we get to sleep! There was no way I was stopping on the way, I am already amazingly excited and there is still 281 days left!

Lower Level seats seem like a good choice from the description of less foot traffic, being quiet etc.
I am a water drinker and have a bladder of a two year old so being on the same level as the bathrooms sounds nice too!

I plan on bringing a blanket, pillow as well as various things to entertain myself, but I am pretty easily amused and since we will be living Maine around 1am I'm hoping to sleep though much of it!

Thanks again!

Oh - another quick question, I do get car sick sometimes and was wondering about the train ? I guess worse case I take something :)

I get very car sick. ALWAYS have to drive myself. I don't have a problem with flying though unless there is a really big problem with turbulence. I did not have any problems with the train.

Thanks! I'm the same way, if I'm driving I'm okay. Good to know :) been a little worried I'd be sick the entire train ride!

We will be riding coach on the Auto Train in a few weeks. I'll post back here w/ our experience.

It will be me, dh, dd (10), & ds (5).

When my husband I lived in DC, we took the autotrain down to Disney World for our first trip with our two young boys (then age 1 and 3). The trip was way back in 2005 (finally going back again this year), but I remember enough to say...

1.) Taking the train was a lot of fun! Nobody felt sick. Nobody was wishing we had not taken the train.

2.) We picked the most expensive room we could afford. It had a window. It had its own bathroom and bunks. My husband slept on the top, and I shared the bottom bunk with my two little boys. Before we chose our room, I got the measurements of the bunks online, outlined them on our floor at home with tape, and laid down with the boys to make sure we'd all fit :rotfl2:

3.) We prepared ourselves mentally for a tiny room, tiny sleeping arrangements, and a toilet shower combo. We didn't get great sleep, and I felt a little weird using that tiny bathroom shower deal, but it wasn't that bad.

4.) Driving all the way home was tough. It seemed like it took forever! The train ride went really fast by comparision...not hours wise, but mentally the drive was way harder.

I think it would be a very memorable experience for your family. We no longer live in DC, so we will probably never get to ride the train again, but.. If we still lived in DC, we'd probably do it again :)

Tape one the floor! LOVE IT! :rotfl:

We wished we lived closer to wdw but flying and renting a car for 15 days was more expensive then us driving and using the auto train!

Tape one the floor! LOVE IT! :rotfl: can't imagine having two little kids on the train with me! too crowded" its just me and DBF... but we have lived together in some pretty small places over the last 4 years :)ah life of a college student so glamorous. :upsidedow

We've done the Auto Train for two trip - both times we got that family bedroom. We had a blast!

A single carry-on bag for a change of clothes and toiletries. The two kids each got to bring along a backpack with books, movie players, wubbies, etc.

What made the trip more bearable was a small cooler with drinks and snacks. The food on the train was actually good and there is a snack bar, but it was nice to have our own little supply of drinks and fruit.

I've used AutoTrain to move my collector car from Florida to DC, and back to Florida. The AT was a lot cheaper than trucking the vehicle. I got a roomette and while very small I recommend them over a coach seat for one simple reason - privacy. One time I did the trip alone and the roomette was wonderful. Second trip my son came with (we actually moved two cars) and two big guys in the roomette ws a bit tight. But a trip to the club car to stretch the legs once and a while helped.

The roomette car has a very nice shower setup - it is shared but I never saw anyone else use it. Plenty of towels available. And of course you get a 'real' bed - sort of - when it is sleeping time (if you want it). Arriving in the roomette I found the USA Today and bottled water waiting for me. A VERY nice thing about AT is you can bring a cooler with, well, anything you want. I brought my own libations ... club car is expensive; it was easy to see the veterans - they had wine and cheese and decks of cards and board games and snacks and and. The dinner was WAY better than I expected (NOTHING like airplane food - when they did airplane food). Breakfast is continental: fruit, juice, muffin, cereal, coffee tea.

Down side: both times I went the a/c in my car was marginal at best. Especially at night it was damn warm. As a light sleeper forget about it . . . the train blows the whistle every 4.6378954 seconds all night - and there is plenty of motion. Not ship rocking motion, but plenty or bouncing. If you are expecting to spend a lot of time watching the beautiful scenery this is the wrong train. The first hour out of Lorton is nice but then .... well, where to the train tracks run in your town? You see the back of warehouses, rundown areas and overgrown railroad right of way.

AT prices do adjust for vehicle size - I guess I got a good deal as the lil' guy pushes the limit:
