we are in the state of Florida and my daughter is 17 doesnt have her license yet. How much approximately to be insured on one of our vehicles? How about her own vehicle? Has anyone purchase a vehicle that is in the name of both the parents and the child...does that make a difference? Just looking for ballpark figures here...thank you.

I don't know but I found out that shopping around was the best policy for me. I found that there were differences of close to 4500 between the lowest and highest prices....I ended up switching insurance back to a previous carrier becuse they were the lowest of the prices that I was quoted.

For us, State Farm had 3 different discount programs - all of which my DD qualified for and they allow you to combine them. Steer Clear discount required her to keep an initial driving log and watch an online video - 25% discount. Good student discount was 15% and their multi-car discount was another 10%. And, since we had three drivers and only two cars, they allowed us to name her as the primary on the car that was cheaper to insure. We ended up only having a rates increase by about $52/month. Since we live in New Jersey -about 15 miles outside of NYC, the inflated insurance capital of the world !, we thought that was pretty good.

If you or DH are over 50 we found that the AARP rates for us with a teen driver were the best.

Every state is different and many insurance companies have different rules, I would certainly shop around. We found quotes to add DS that ranged from $4800 (Farmers) to $1900 (American Family) just for him when DS first started driving. A couple of years later when DH turned 50 we switched to AARP(Hartford) we have been very very happy.
Some carriers will rate the kid on a specific vehicle and others will rate them on the "family fleet" as a whole

We have State Farm too and DD16 qualified for all the discounts. When she was an occasional driver on one of our cars it was ~$50/month. When she got her car, an older car with liability only, it was ~$75/month.

But if you add a son - -wow (a hundred+ so a month)

When I got my car when I was 16, my parent's required me to get my own insurance policy, which I did. Full coverage on a brand new Camaro Convertible Z28 was $4,500 a year, back in 1995. This was in NYS of course.

$1600 a year when we added our son, and we did NOT add an additional car at the time.

$250 a month more to add my son to our policy. We also added an umbrella policy at the same time in case he was in an accident. That was a year and 3 months ago - we priced it again once he turned 18 - no change so we left him under us. Next year he will get his own policy.

golfgal offers great info on this subject! :thumbsup2

Those are amazing rates. I don't think I've seen any insurance company that cover an adult, let along a teen for that little money.

Funny about the good student discounts. My insurance company dropped them because good students drive more and have more accidents!

We just got our dec pages for our renewal with our twins on our policy. Our premium actually went DOWN by $10/month :lmao:. Our insurance company credit rates and re-checks every 2 years (which this would be the second year) so we must have gotten a pretty good discount for that again.

There is not "how much" because rates for every company are different and even in every city in your state they are going to be different.

Basically, if a child is the primary driver on your policy, your rates are going to be about double what they are if the child is only an occasional driver. Now, the primary/occasional driver are in the INSURANCE world, not necessarily how much they actually drive any given car. If you have 3 cars and 3 drivers, each driver is listed as a "primary" on one of the cars. If you have 2 cars and 3 drivers, your teen can be listed as "occasional" driver on one of the vehicles, saving you quite a bit of money. If you need a car for your teen, get an old car where you only need liability coverage to keep your costs down.

Actual ownership of the car makes zero difference in insurance.

We have Allstate. We have 3 cars & 3 drivers. Allstate rated my daughter on the most expensive car -- just because she may occasionally drive it. They would not let us change cars for that. My son is 16 next Wednesday and will share the car with her until she leaves for college in August. I don't want to see how much it will go up with him driving!!

I wanted to get a new car, but now I'm worried about insurance. Guess I'll have to start calling around again for better rates.

When my parents added me (a female) it increased their insurance about $200 every six months (we go through allstate). However, when they added my brother a few years later it cost more than that per month for him to be insured.

Geico -- a daughter - $50 a month. She does not have her own car.

I just switched companies because of how much my DS17's insurance was going to be. granted, he did have a speeding ticket in the first year so that did not help. It was going to be almost $200/mo full coverage for him. I decided it was worth it to drop it to liability, and my new agent went thru Progressive and we got it down to $60/mo for liability only.
